I don’t always hit a sand wedge 170 yards, but when I do it’s from a green side bunker.

Yep. I remember catching it clean and remarking "oh man I hit it TOO good". And my non-golfer brother with me scoffed and said "how does anyone hit it TOO good with a poor result?"

Easiest way to escape a bunker. 1. Get feet set properly in the sand. 2. Point out nonexistent wildlife to playing partner in opposite direction 3. Pick up ball and sand and throw toward flag 4. Thump club in sand for sound effect, and yell "Nice!"

Cutting across the golfball from the greenside bunker has really helped me with not fearing these bunkers anymore. Theres a good video by Grant Horvat on YT. Good video rick 👍🏼

Rick I love EVERYTHING about your channels and this is something i would like to see every now and then again moving forward. I know it is old, but i am going back through old ones. Maybe next time a fairway bunker lesson. THANK YOU
Warning: The open club face technique is only reliable if you’re playing in v good soft bunkers. Generally bunkers are one of the most poorly maintained areas on a golf course which means most people will be playing out of hard, dense bunkers which means you can’t open the club face a lot

Yep, if you're in a hardpan bunker, you basically have to 'nip' it. Hoping you don't catch it thin or bounce the club into the ball...
@severimakela3141
2 жыл бұрын
That is why I always just chip it to the middlle of the green. The case that there wasn't really any sand under the ball has made me skull the shit out of the ball too many times when the club just bounces back from the bottom of the bunker. Just chip it to the green and in worst case take the two putt.
@ddogg14

Exactly. If your sand bunkers look more like hardpan, just treat it like a chip from a tight lie. Or consider just putting out, if there isn't much of a lip on the bunker

My course has been ravaged by torrential rain on a number of occasions this year, rendering the bunkers into hard-pan traps. The trickiest ones are where the sand has been added on top and digging the feet in feels soft, but the wedge still bounces off the underlying hard-pan. Ah the joys.
Can’t wait to try this and blade in to the other green side bunker 😂😂

I was literally discussing this yesterday with my friend. I haven’t played for years but this last month got back in to golf and no clue on bunker shots. Perfect timing and will try this on my next round when inevitably I end up in a bunker 😂👌🏻
Love it rick simple and easy. Glad you covered cutting across it and aiming more square with a lower handle. Me personally I find it easier to aim with the square technique cutting across it brings in a bit too much guess work for me.
There's a few more fundamentals to add with "regular" greenside bunker shots: 1. Keep more weight on lead foot 2. Position ball ahead of centre (closer to your driver set up) 3. Keep your lower body relatively still (you don't need weight shift) 4. USE THE BOUNCE OF THE CLUB to compress the sand. Also, don't forget to fluff up the ball to make it easier, who's watching?? lol

I did this yesterday when I played. Ended up in a few greenside bunkers and got out of all but one in one shot, and that one was buried. Glad to see these tip videos still coming, too.
I love your videos and they are helping me swing the clubs
Rick: You need a 56 or a 60 degree wedge Me with a 58 in my hands: Uh oh
Rick, I love you man. I have been so hit or miss out of bunkers. Played yesterday, got into a bunker early. Told myself to just follow these tips and what do you know I hit the most perfect bunker shot. Went on to do it 5 more times in a row that round! Never have I been so confident out of the bunker now. Thanks for this!
Absolutely love this, perfect explanation and it works!!
I've watch a bunch of your sand shot videos... they have helped quite a bit, so thanks
that was an absolutely brilliant golf lesso. More of these please. Keep me wanting to play golf.
Rick, I watched this video last night and went out to play 18 this morning with a friend. We played from the back (not championship) tees which probably is a bit optimistic but not many on the course so only hurting ourselves! My course handicap for that course and tees is 22 and I ended up shooting 90! Happy with that. Was in 4 greenside bunkers and got up and down 3 times... twice were just tap ins! The fourth I just missed from about 8 feet... My buddy was in awe of my sand skills! This video gets all the credit as previously I would always hit the ball first, then sand with mixed results. I tried this from a chipping green bunker twice before we teed off and I came up a bit short but always got out so punch it a bit harder when I was on the course and it was great. Gave me a lot of confidence. Thanks for the great content.
Tried this earlier today and it worked for me. Will do this every time from now on
This is so helpful. Thank you
Great video as usual Thanks Rick
Love the simple lessons!
He is the best u have played and his commentary was incredible. I loved it.
Good timing Rick, been struggling recently out of bunkers and this timely video reminded me what I've not been doing!
This is great advice and I always follow it … on my fourth attempt at getting out of a bunker.
These bunker tips are nuggets, especially about opening the club face and regripping the club. Cannot tell you what a difference this made to the three bunkers I was in today. Won't bore you with the details but thanks a lot it has made a big difference.
Super video as usual thanks
Worked like a champ. Thanks
Thanks Rick going to try that out.
massive thankyou rick, broke 100 for first time last night and your videos have been a massive help towards that. onto breaking 90!
Brilliant little video!
Took your advice and hit some decent bunker shots today.thanks Rick Shiels
This is amazing! I watched this video just before I hit a round at Ruiru Sports Club, Kenya. As fate would have it, I got into the bunker on 18! I tried this and the results were amazing. Open the club - key words. Asante Rick

Hi Rick - I don't have the Telegram app so I guessing the only way is to create an account! Thanks.
Great video. Love these. I love how you covered two different swing angles too, cause I'm prone to the old school method but now I want to try lowering the grip and swinging straight as I feel my results with the old school angle is inconsistent. Also, I think you should get Guy into these videos. Multi-personality channel.
Cant believe how well that work, Got up & down 3 times on my last out. Thanks for the tip Ric
At some point a teacher/pro told me to think like I'm 'sweeping' the ball out, to help keep width in my swing, keeping it shallow instead of steep, and that has always helped me (and I agree with everything in the video)👍
When I was a kid, most people started with 4 or 5 clubs. When your club with the most loft was a 9 iron, you instinctively opened the face up. You also learned to close it up and get your hands forward in the swing for more distance. Same with your other iron(s). The limitation was a good teacher.
Very useful as always
Good tricks Rick. I always think of your video tips out on the course
great tip! played saturday and was in a bunker behind another bunker and was a nighmare to get onto the green! went from one to the next then finally the green! will definitly try this next time!
I used these tips today and was 2/2 getting out of bunkers, thank you so much!!!
Please do a video on how to hit out pine straw or mulch. Loose material strikes have always been a problem. Great to see coaching vids again. Thanks Rick
Great tip
Great video Rick, it's a part of the game that's always hurt me even though I would be quite a good wedge player. I'll definitely be trying that the next day I'm on the course.
Brilliant lesson
very informative video Rick! 👍 Choice techniques.
I like the lob wedge as well!!
It looks so easy Rick. Of course when I thin it and send a screamer toward the next tee box, anything else would look easy. Well done on the lesson.
I think I finally got it... thx!! 3 for 3 yesterday.
Good stuff rick
You are the best, Rick!
Great video
Thanks Rick, someone showed me that about 6 years ago and it made a huge difference to my game and my bunker play. I’m generally not afraid of bunkers anymore so long as they have enough sand in them. Could you do another video on how to get out of bunkers that have very little sand in them because I find opening the club face doesn’t work and can cause a terrible result?

I'd love to see a video on getting out of bunkers from the downslope. These *kill* me.
This is great Rick, i find the problem with bunkers is the lack of practice, as a 17hcp, I tend to play safe on my home course and usually hit 1 or 2 per round (if that) so getting a routine and practice is difficult. These tips will help for sure
Great tips!
Text book. I use a 56 with the face very open as you did and a wide stance. Same way I would address the same shot in heavy 2nd cuts back side of a ton of greens. Thanks for the reminder. Haven't been in the sand much this yr
I am awful at golf, but this lesson has helped me soo much, as I always seem to find the bunkers, I actually hope for the bunker now instead of a little chip shot...Thanks Rick
Bubbie is the biggest hitter I’ve ever seen! Kudos on the last par 5. Outrageous scenes.
Great video Rick, nice and easy to follow. I use the flop shot style escape you described first and never had a problem getting out of bunkers with it. However, could you do a similar video for fairway bunkers please? I find it more difficult to get any real length on them

Brilliant 😀
Great tip.
Well done rick 👏 👍
Just wanted to say thanks. I watched this video and when I played this morning I easily got out of two green side bunkers and saved par. I'm certain it wouldn't have happened without your advice.
Thanks ricky
Two number one rules 😂 love it.
Hey Rick great content. One thing that isn’t addressed that much is keeping the weight on the left side. Open club face, swing with a little more speed, hit behind but weight is important as well. That weight on the left keeping head steady really works well
Great video Shielsy, now find a bunker with basically no sand and make a video of that, 2 of 3 courses in my area have virtually no sand in the green side bunkers.
Love you Rick! Sand slappin
Can you review miura irons??
Hi. Have you done a video on how the adjustable weights, and adjustable loft sleeves?
This is great advice that has worked for me WHEN the bunker conditions are right. I’d love to see you do a video on what to do when the bunker is hard like concrete 😆
Hey Rick huge fan here!!! So I have to confess and it works quite well for me too. But there are times when I close the face and move my handle forward when I'm in a green side bunker lol. And honestly it works put awesome most times. Bunkers mainly have to be soft on top hard underneath or just plain hard after some rain. I use this technique Most of the time honestly and you say you dare someone to use it so pleeeeeaase come to Florida and let me show you lol. That would be a dream come true. I've been following you for quite a while now. Cheers and have a good day.

You honestly think he’s gonna go over to Florida to visit some random in the KZread comments claiming he hits good bunker shots 😂😂 so dumb
I love the POV camera, it definitely gives a better look at how open the face should be. Great video
Gold video for my 14 year old. He listens to what Ricky says, even in I say exactly the same 😅
Great tips👍. We dream of sand like that at my club🙈
Great advice!!! There is one scenario I don't see this working though. Have you ever been plugged in the lip of a greenside bunker? I do almost the exact opposite for this shot. Turn the face of the club inwards directly facing you and place the club just on the outside of the ball. Take a hard swing hitting right next to the ball and it will pop straight up in the air. If you try it, let me know what you think?
Great!
I was just in a green side bunker after seeing this video and, no joke, followed these steps and splashed out to 3 feet for a rare (for me) sand save 🙌
I certainly try that every time. Varying results lol
I find that many amateurs struggle out of the bunkers because they're convinced it's hard. If it's wet, hard, or if it's more clay than "sand" and if there's hardly any lip to worry about I'll play the shot like a chip with great success. Granted you have to give it more than if you were playing it from the grass to compensate for the sand you take but it works and it also checks up really hard. You need to do a fairway bunker video Rick.
Love your videos Rick, they've helped me tremendously. Just 1 small constructive criticism. They're were at least 4 #1 rules in this video. Which should I follow lol.
Ricky, excelent way to explain and to give confidence on a very difficult shot. One question is... what "bounce" you are using ?? Is it 10 or 12 degrees ?? Thank for this tip.
@michaelguillen4688
2 жыл бұрын
I hope you can recommend us on how much bounce is needed to really work in a bunker where it rains quite often. Not a fluffy Sandra. Regards
What do you do on a compacted, often sandless bunker on your cheaper courses? Where hitting before the ball is like hitting concrete (other than go to a better course)
I need this In my life! I rarely go in bunkers, but when I do, I go in deep.
G.O.A.T of youtube golf 🐐🔥
I used to have a great deal of difficulty getting out of the sand. For me, the issue was not to do with the face being open or closed (I was always certain to have it open). My problem was a lack of COMMITMENT to the shot. I would swing too slow/tentatively or I would not follow through. I'd "stab" at the sand behind the ball and invariably leave the ball in the bunker. It wasn't until I learned to swing AGGRESSIVELY (and I mean aggressively, NOT hard/fast). Just take a smooth, full, confident swing and enter a couple of inches behind the ball and be sure to FOLLOW THROUGH. The ball will pop out, guaranteed.
More solid tips from Shiels. Thank you. A fairway looking bunker placed by the green. I need to find one of those. The other day my random stranger playing partner took a few whacks from a deeper greenside bunker on the 18th hole around 7:45pm and then said screw it. He grabbed his ball from the sand, walked up to the green to say goodbye/handshake and wish me well while I debated my final two putts to end the day. I then remembered how earlier in the round I lob wedged over a bunker on the right side of the green only to land in the left greenside bunker that felt like concrete so I chipped out with a 42 degree wedge that “landed” in the right green side bunker I had previously cleared. I got out of that bunker in one swing so I could attempt an 18 foot fringe putt that left me 2 feet to end the hole. Sadly this took place at a course where before the round I smashed balls out of their nice sandy practice bunker that didn’t exactly mimic the ones I hit into during the round. Hilariously frustrating in hindsight.
Hi Rick. Thanks for all the tips. I recently struggled in hard wet bunkers. Any thoughts? Thanks

rake and place
I love my 60 for short sand shots and if really short will do the lowering big time with speed. I do not like opening the face unless I really have to because it lessens the odds for me of hitting it well. I get it, and for a flop which I rarely play I will try it but the failure rate is too high for me. Of course, I'm not a great golfer, mid 80's, but hoping to break 80 this year.
Imagine your ball is on a tee (tee is buried in the sand) Break the tee in half with your club. Best tip I've ever read for keeping your thoughts simple. 👌
Rick still rocking SM8's mate get your hands on the SM9's surely your grooves are well worn already!
Legend.....
I switched from a 56 to a 60 wedge. It was intimidating at first but after a few practice rounds it's my goto in the sand now!
Love you I’m the guy you invited to ur live podcast from Ireland who won the Gary Player
Very good tip! You forgot to mention "weight on the front leg". I see so many people leading on the back as they try to 'help' the ball out with their body and worst... their wrist ! OMG !!!
I'm really really good at doing hint number 2.
At 72, I have lost club speed. I do actually close the face, a little bit, and hit directly down on the ball. I also aim to the right. The "bounce" reduces what little speed I have to the point of popping the ball, nearly straight up. Many times, this actually works.
I keep the shaft leading ahead on my end while the face is open. Makes it easier for me to hit it straight towards the hole.
new subscriber here ricky!!!😊🇵🇭
I have always squared the face, not closed, but its because of something you said. I always thought opening the face pointed the club way right.
