Episode 50 - When the Super Nintendo launched in August of 1991, its launch lineup was solid, but small. The legendary Super Mario World was of course the pack-in game, but the only other games on the shelf that day were Pilotwings and F-Zero. While Sega would latch on to the fact that, having released two years prior, the Genesis had a much larger library, several games were released on the Super Nintendo in 1991 that have come to be considered absolute classics on the system. Gradius III, one of the best shooters on the console, came out about a week after launch, and other noteworthy titles released that year include ActRaiser, Final Fantasy II, Super Ghouls'n Ghosts, and Super Castlevania IV.
Show Notes:
- That is veteran character actor “Mike Starr” in the SNES commercial at the beginning of the video.
- This is the longest "documentary" style episode I've ever made, at just over 1 hour long.
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past was originally announced as an Autumn 1991 release, but the game was delayed until early 1992.
- Work began on this video in June of 2017, and the episode was finished 10 minutes before midnight on December 31st.
- All gameplay footage was captured using an RGB-modded model 2 Super Nintendo upscaled through a Framemeister and recorded using an Elgato Game Capture HD.

That's what SEGA mentioned in the Classic Game compilation for Dreamcast, "there's something missing in modern games that a lot of classic ones have". It's the love, care & craftsmanship that developers used to make amazing memorable games, and not just impress with flashy 3D graphics. When 3D came to consoles there was an initial influx of crap games, both Saturn & playstation with companies trying to quickly cash in on poorly thought out and developed 3d games, Bugsy3D, Twisted Metal, Barbie, Kileak DNA imperative, come to mind on ps1 right away, anything on the Atari Jaguar sucked a huge hole in the universe,

Thank you so much for doing this! This was a real pleasure to watch! On Christmas 1991 I got my NES with Super Mario Bros 3, but rumours had spread to Sweden about the upcoming system... My friend got it the following fall (it was released in April of '92 in Sweden) and all of a sudden my "new" NES became old... Bought an old SNES some years ago and started to collect the old games and today my collection also includes MegaDrive, NES, GameBoy and N64. Seeing these kind of videos make me wanna learn more and more about the games, developers and all - once again, thank you!

I was 11 when SNES was released, and was one of the kids who got it for Christmas. I went to visit some friends of the family and the kid there who was my age had gotten a Sega Genesis. I remember looking at Sonic while he played it and thinking how much better it looked then Super Mario World did in the 30 minutes I was able to play it before we had to leave. After getting back home and playing well into the night, all my doubts disappeared. It's funny to think back and remember how happy you were capable of being as a kid into video games. Ripping off the wrapping paper and seeing the SNES logo was as close to a spiritual experience as I'll ever have LOL!

Nice video...a few things about Final Fight...the producer of the original arcade game said that the game was originally called Final Fight, but the higher ups wanted to release it as a sequel to SF, but after that trade show the producers really felt like it was it's own thing and reiterated that to Capcom, who agreed to reinstate the original title. Also, The Streets of Fire thing is a bit tough because, which the producer does say he told the staff to watch American Hollywood Action flicks, he claims the game isn't directly based on any specific one.. Personally I doubt this, as there are too many coincidences between the movie and the game.

I'm so glad this video was suggested to me. Your research and level of detail, as well as production values and editing are spot frigging on. And one piece of praise I want to heap is your pronunciation of Japanese words and names. There are so many people who have chosen to make retro/classic gaming channels, and naturally a lot of that subject revolves around Japan. Yet some narrators' elocution when it comes to Japanese, ranges from miserable to "lolwut?". I think it's awesome that, either you already knew how to pronounce things correctly, or took the time to research that as well. Either way, kudos, man. It's music to my ears haha.

I thought you did a fantastic job summarizing these notable titles of 1991 many of which are the basis of my collection of SNES games. Super Castlevania IV, U.N. Squadron, Gradius III, Sim City, John Madden Football, Super Baseball Simulator 1,000. I like how you demonstrated the game's history from the NES or Famicom to the SNES as well as some of the Turbo Grafx 16 connections. Outstanding work and for anyone who is curious. When I played FF2 on the SNES, I was so blown away by the game's soundtrack that I would have the game running with a tape-recorder next to the speaker. I sold the tapes to kids at school who also liked the music. This was way easier to do on the Sega Genesis though, because it had a headphone jack that the recorder could plug directly into and get near-perfect sound quality. I sold a lot of mix tapes of games such as FF2, FF3, Secret of Mana, Super Ghouls N Ghosts, Shinobe, Street Fighter, Streets of Rage 1 and 2, Valis 3 and Sonic. My biggest selling mix-tape was Donkey Kong Country. Kids were willing to buy it just for the underwater stage music. Although, I cheated on that one because DKC's soundtrack was released on CD in Japan, but I got it at a Japanese-import store that was far away from school (2 hour long bus ride) so I was only one who had it. I just made recordings directly from the CD itself :) This was around the time CDs were becoming mainstream but not everyone had a CD player yet.

Hahaha, Don't forget about "DRAH-ken" instead of "DRAK-en" and "Seh-sil" versus "See-sil" in Final Fantasy IV/II. No one ever knew how to pronounce original game names back in 1991, and no one still knows what the proper pronunciation is. Part of the exprience in 1991 was arguing with your buddies whether it was GRADE-ius or GRAD-ius... Yep, that one was actually a real debate I had with a buddy in 1991! =D

I'll never forget watching that cinematic intro for the first time. Gives me chills to this day. Also, I had a subscription to Galoob's quarterly Game Genie code mailings at the time, and the only time I ever recall them breaking schedule and mailing out an addendum for one single game was when Super Metroid came out.

I still remember seeing it the first time on my friends tv, along with Super Mario RPG, which on a CRT tv at the time looked like the best thing ever on SNES. People just don't understand what it was like using a CRT before these HD tvs came out.

Let me just say this first Chris, I LOVE the Super Nintendo!! Yes, you know me for adoring the Neo-Geo, but the Super NES was so iconic that even I had to admit at times I would ditch the Neo-Geo MVS in the arcades to sit in my room playing away with such legendary titles on the unit. Yep, that says plenty on me bro. People think I'm just a Neo-Geo fella, but the SNES is really up there on the top ranking brackets for me . 8^) Well done as always Chris. This goes up there with your Sega Saturn version you made a few years back. 8^) Anthony..
