Episode 71 - The Sony PlayStation in 1995. The PlayStation launched in September of 1995 with a handful of games that for the most part weren't exactly head-turners, but over the course of what remained of that calendar year the system's library had already seen the addition of titles that would help propel the PlayStation to the top step of the podium among its generation of consoles. These included games like Air Combat, Tekken, Wipeout, Destruction Derby, Twisted Metal, and Road Rash, so that while at launch the PlayStation might only have been attractive to hardcore gamers willing to take a risk on a company not normally known for gaming, it quickly became a very viable alternative to the Sega Saturn.
If you’d like access to the official CGQ Discord server, shoot me an e-mail (address below) for an invite link.
Show Notes
- This video is dedicated to my very good friend, Fabian. My memories of the PlayStation are closely tied to my memories of hanging out with him, and in fact it was hanging out with him in my basement playing old PlayStation games that got me back on track working on this video.
- I started working on this video in-earnest in March of 2020, but had actually begun writing it and collecting the materials needed all the way back in 2016. The video was originally intended to be the next "big" release after the Sega Genesis and Sega Master System launch videos. Obviously I got side-tracked doing other things.
- All PlayStation footage was recorded using actual hardware, upscaled through a RetroTink 5X Pro using HDRetrovision cables. Footage from 8 and 16-bit games, as well as home computers and arcade cores, was captured using a MiSTer FPGA console.
- At an hour and 25 minutes, this is the longest video on the main channel, including the unscripted magazine read-throughs, surpassing the Dreamcast launch video by 15 minutes. In the future, I may start breaking videos like this up into smaller parts.
- Even though it was already included in the PlayStation launch video, I once again featured the PlayStation's bootup sequence here, because it was one of the most popular things about the launch video, and also because I too love that sound.
- I had to upload this video three times. After the first upload, official CGQ QA/QC officer Mike McFly found a small error in the script, so I had to edit the video and upload it again. Then for some reason on the second upload I got a copyright claim from whoever owns the rights to the Mortal Kombat music, so I had to replace that music with some similar-sounding royalty-free music, and upload the video a third time. For that reason, it was actually released a day later than originally planned. I'm curious to see if anyone notices the music change, as I think I found something that sounds like it could have come straight out of a MK game.
- Speaking of royalty-free music, the soundtrack for the 3DO and PSX release of Road Rash is famous for its soundtrack, as I discuss in this video. Those songs play during the time spent in the menu system, as well as during all of the cutscenes. Obviously I can't have Soundgarden music playing in the background of the video or again I'll get a copyright claim, so all of that music was replaced with royalty-free music that I thought sounded close enough to 90s grunge. I'm curious to see how many people notice this one, too.
Also be sure to check out my other channel, where I do live streams, nostalgic musings about childhood in the 80's, and even the occasional collection video.

This is not the place for anyone to share off-topic opinions, whatever they may be and whichever "side" they might be from. If you think "I never see stuff like that here", it's because I've been wasting my time deleting them. At least 99% of you are awesome people who share my love for old video games, and this pinned comment is not directed at you . The PS1 holds a very special place in my heart. Being a *huge* Ridge Racer fan (our local Aladdin's Castle had one), I just couldn't wait to play the game at home, so I imported a JP console during the Christmas season of 1994. Japan Video Games out of California set me up with a launch console, and a copy of RR for around $700 USD. I was in heaven. Made slaving away at McDonald's to pay for it worth every minute. My most cherished console launch of them all. Love your content, thank you!!!

Sony PlayStation did so well out of the gate because it was different. Different enough to make people take notice of it as not being another Sega or Nintendo system. They went for a more mature focus of those who grew up on the NES and Genesis were at a point in their lives for something more... bold. And it worked. I myself was not swayed by the marketing like i know others were, i grew up on the 2600 so by the 90's I was an adult and being that I liked all types of games... that meant i also liked all types of game systems. So naturally i got a PS1 right after i picked up the Saturn. And supporting both was rather costly but worth it for me. Started off with Ridge Racer, Philosoma and Tekken.

Chris, this is one of my favorite periods in gaming, the PS1 was the first game system that I bought with my own money, and I took so much pride and had so much enjoyment in collecting for it! Many people have a hard time understanding how, if they weren't there, these games even the subpar ones just felt like such a leap in terms of atmosphere and playability over what was possible in the previous console generation. Yes some of these games were definitely at a rating of 6 or 7 quality but they were still an enjoyable thing to experience because of what they offered that was new. I remember running across an issue of the CD-Rom magazine IE Interactive that had video previews of an import PS1 and rewatching that segment nonstop for months. Everything about the system seemed futuristic, with the controller having shapes on the buttons, ports that the hosts speculated wildly on, and a cryptic ad campaign. I was able to get a system with Ridge Racer and Tekken for Christmas, and probably gained about 10 pounds eating candy while trying to get that damn Devil car. What a great time. Excellent video, as always!

Absolutely FANTASTIC video CGQ! Tour de force doesn't give enough praise for the work you've put into this. You struck an excellent balance with coverage per game. The little details like corner titles (in MTV music video font no less!) and box art really added so much along with the various CRT backgrounds. Great information and thoughts on a huge list of titles for the PlayStation. I broke up viewing into two parts but have no complaints! It was great to have something that drew me back for more! Destruction Derby was one of my early favorite releases back in the day. Keep up the excellent work!

Chris, I havent been MORE excited for a KZread video to pop up in a LONG TIME. This is SO great! Sorry about the MK3 music trouble. Looking forward to you covering the PS1 days on CGQ+ also!!! Please keep it up! Playstation in 1995 feels SO close to 3DO in style, games, and 'attitude.' Its funny, Sony seems like it succeeded mostly because it got a boost from 3D0's corpse (even pilfering its best games). 3DO coming out in 93' was probably the biggest cause of its demise (FMVs, high price tag, underpowered for 3D). Would we be living with the Pansonic 8DO in 2021 if Sony released the Playstation first??

We were kids and teens back then so we didn't notice or care about the politics, and politics hadn't infested into popular culture (tho it was starting to i.e Bill Clinton, the Monica Lewinsky scandal, Princess Diana death etc.). It was still there tho, just more an "old person" thing and not commercialized nearly to the degree it is today. Which was for the best tbh. Still tho, we even had Nick News back then but it wasn't the culture-war/extremists politics BS we have today there or in mainstream either tbh.

Digital Foundry covered the launch games for the PS1 in those 3 regions, I forgot to mention I was asking about future videos, in case of a 1996 focused video, etc., but I get it you cover US only, as they are far too much to cover alone, if in 1995 there were almost 50, subsequent years will easily surpass this number.

Brilliant coverage as always. One understated factor of Sony's success is the infuriating coverage by media. The propaganda in favor of their machine was out of this world. The price is 299 with no save storage and no game. Saturn bundle included builtin save memory and Virtua Fighter. Magazines rated Capcom fighters with lower scores in Saturn due to "blue shadows". The Sony machine was really brilliant but it had a favorable coverage against its competitors.

Sony had deeper pockets & presumably had favor with electronics retailers due to their history. It was certainly a good machine and had a lot of great games, but I feel like part of the reason for their success is similar to that of the XBOX, in that the parent company had the financial resources to market the hell out of it and to keep the console afloat even if it hadn't taken off as quickly. It was hardly a fair fight, given that Sega and Nintendo could never even come close to Sony's marketing budget, but that's business for you.

It was relatively cheap. The system was friendly for programmers and the CD’s were cheap to print. Combine that with Sega’s recent failures of the Sega CD and 32X with Nintendo’s cartridge system and expensive games you had the perfect storm for Sony to take advantage.
