    Said it before and I’ll say it again, I’ve been in the hobby since 1989, and was going to retire in 2019 because I was tire Of the constant struggle to keep fish healthy, I rarely lost fish but I just knew that they were not happy all the time, , I would not be wasting my time following FF if everything he has taught me through his videos,wasn’t true . I would’ve have quit a long time ago, I actually feel like I did retire because Nature took over for me.

    The Walstad method was my first successful experience in keeping a planted tank. It went against the grain of so much advice I had learned, yet it worked beautifully. I'm currently experimenting with a clay based substrate to see how it compares to soil. In theory, the clay will have a high cation exchange capacity like soil, so it should be able to bind nutrients and make them available to plants. It's also seemed to have a benefit in maintaining a lower PH as well (good for breeding fish that require softer, acidic water to successfully spawn).

I’m going to stick to one Aquarium for now, but I would like to do something really cool with it. Thank you for motivating me again father🐠

    🙏🙏 I started my first aquarium 6/2023. After 6 months of research I decided to do the Father Fish approach straight out of the gate!! I now have a 60 gallon breeder, 55gallon, 2-20 gallon, and a 10 gallon. All dirted and heavily planted jungle, with river rock from my local river, sediment, leaves and wood for tannins. I love the South American fish and ph. Tetras, otocinclus, shrimp, snails, minnows I caught, etc. I never do water changes, only top offs. I have never lost a fish, knock on some wood for me please 🤣 I decided I was going to have fun with this hobby and not stress myself out!! I am so excited! I can’t stop building aquariums, I need a tee shirt (MTS)! My little boy thinks I have lost my mind, cause I have aquariums everywhere and can’t stop! Thank you so much Father Fish for popping up in my research!! I love you so much!! ❤️❤️❤️

    I always struggled keeping freshwater but had great success keeping saltwater because in saltwater live rock was recommended. Amphipods, copepods, isopods etc. are essential along with phytoplankton which is the base of the food web. Unfortunately most fish shops don't recommend anything other than a sterile environment for keeping freshwater. Thanks for changing the game and making this information available.

    After 23 years I put together my first ever aquarium as an adult. Except this time, I set it up the Father Fish way! I had some muscle memory from my childhood and college days when I had aquariums, but had to significantly fight against everything we've been taught by capitalism. That's when I stumbled upon your channel, clarifying the methodology for a self-sustaining ecosystem. I adapted your system with the materials I have locally - which I'm grateful for being in the city of Los Angeles as we have an abundance of natural flora and fauna. I pulled sand substrate and rocks directly from the Los Angeles river. My black gold soil is the green trash the city heats and composts and returns back to the residents. I only added untreated molar kitty litter and pigeon grit for mineral enrichment, but otherwise the river substrate is rich with minerals and teeming with life. The plants were the only things I bought (as I didn't want to tempt fate so soon). After 2 weeks, so far so good. I really think that sourcing my substrate from the LA river accelerated the aging of the aquarium by seeding it with microbial life. Subscribed and looking forward to updates. GO TERPS!

    Oh wow -- I'm so glad I found your channel! I've been interested in permaculture farming and getting heavy into Elaine's food web education over the past few years, but my interest in keeping fish (and reptiles) came long before that. I just started getting back into the hobby after many years away, with planning a huge, room-sized paludarium, so I'm doing a lot of youtube learning and listening -- but stumbling across your channel while trying to learn more about the little 'extra' microorganisms that could be introduced into a tank, I heard your methods of having natural soils and a system based around that -- and I'm so inspired! I will certainly learn what I can from your setup, and I'd like to integrate this 'soil building' method into the plans I had already for this small ecosystem, and hopefully it will be able to produce something very neat with both aquatic elements and large terrestrial areas. I would love to share it with you in a few years once it's all set up, if you'd be interested to see! Thank you so much for the extra education and inspiration; this will be very helpful - and I'm glad to hear and see this being done successfully! I had the ideas in mind of what I wanted to create (a balanced and aesthetic aquatic system), but it's wonderful to have people already doing very neat things already so I might learn from their experience! I did a small version of this with a large planted shrimp tank underneath a functional arboreal lizard enclosure a few years ago, but there are so many more elements I'd like to incorporate to make it a truly natural and balanced system. Thank you! I hope more people learn from you, for the benefit of the animals and also for the enjoyment of the hobby!

    I do everything in layers in my pond, starting with dirt and charcoal mix, covered over in peat moss and dead leaves, next comes fine sand, then medium sand, then coarse sand, then a small amount of gravel, and then topped with just a little medium sand to fill the gaps a little (with each of these sand layers containing about 5% peat moss) Then some more dead organic matter on top to finish. I also do this exact thing in pots and put them up on bricks so the pot is half in the water half out. The plants grow like a jungle and the whole thing becomes a mini ecosystem.

After watch lots of your videos, i would like you to talk about the diffrence between salted water tank and normal water tank. Most of your video talk about getting dirth and sand but you never talk about water. When you do your tank, do you put tap water or distiled water? For exemple, how can i make a resurection jar for a salted water tank if i'm far from the sea? what kind of plants should i put in salted water tank? Is the ecosystem is very diffrent? I think your channel lack of that subject and i reaaallly love to ear your about these. Other wise, thank you very much for your knowledge and i hope my critic will help you to make more video. I am about to set up an aquarium. My question is how to ensure that I have the right flora and fauna in the substrate. I am thinking of putting MTS in, but I am unsure of how to get the rest of the ecosystem to take hold. I am thinking of going to a local river to get a bucket or two of sediment to put in the dirt portion of the substrate. Would that work? Is there something else I should do instead or in addition? Thanks!

    hello father fish i have 2 questions: 1st: I have setup a planted tank after watching your videos (earlier also i had one but i liked your ideas and concept a lot) and my tank dimensions are 1.5feet length, 1 feet height and 8 inches width i have added 1 inch layer of soil (with organic fertilizer mixed with the soil) and 1 inch layer of sand, i wanted to add 2inch layer of sand but that seemed to be too thick layer at the bottom so is it ok? and please tell me what all changes i should make. BTW i have planted 10 limnophila 8 hygrophilla difformis 6 i dont know name but they are red leaved 2nd: as over the period the plants will consume all the nutrient from the soil, so do i have to setup the tank again with new soil or i should add root tabs???

    Hello there @FatherFish. Great video as usual. I heard somewhere yesterday that not all planaria worms are harmfull. It happened just after I removed 4 of them in a row in my tank (and I was litterally freaking out doing so). "My" planarias are the greyish-white ones with the head in the shape of an arrow and I can see their eyes with a microscope. Someone said they're not hamfull and basically just feed out of 💩 and won't attack snails and shrimps. True or not ?

    Father Fish, I have a problem I need help with. I have 2 shrimp tanks. One with fish store sand, and Lake Erie plants, that I gave a hydrogen peroxide bath to before adding. The 2nd, I took sand from the bottom of Lake Erie, and plants from there. I didn't do the dirt on either one. 1st tank, because I hadn't seen your channel, yet, and 2nd, because I was worried about the tannins. The Erie sand compacts tightly, and is more like silt sand. Now, I've got Scuds in both tanks. No fish, because I'm not sure which kind won't eat the baby shrimp. How do you get rid of Scuds, and do they eat baby shrimp? I really don't want to tear down, because the plants are doing good. If I boil the sand, rocks, and peroxide the plants, I'm starting over, without the good stuff. Do you have a video on this, or any advise? Thank you in advance.

  • @FatherFish

    @FatherFish

    7 ай бұрын

    No vid on this. Scuds are shrimp. they occupy the same niche. Both eat detritus and decaying vegetation. They compete, therefor, with each other for nutrients. To control them remove as many shrimp as possible and add some small fish - guppies, bettas, platies, or small cichlids to control the scuds.

At times it is coming on the upper level of water to breathe. Not sure what has happened. Please help. Regards.

    You still need to change the water. Those tanks are tiny. In the wild the lakes are huge and it rains so fresh water replaces the old water. All the minerals are lost and fish produce other waste along with the plants. You need to change the water. All the old stuff in the water is just getting recycled.
