    So to try and ease the potential backlash from those critical of the MCU interpretation of Spidey, I want to note that this video is not supposed to be a response to the circulating discourse. This essay is designed to be an independent holistic examination of the character, focused on the concepts of social connections and self-concept theory structured broadly with the monomyth. I've made other essays on the Raimi trilogy with an equal amount of attention, so yeah I'm not taking sides guys :) Harry's Journey: kzread.info/dash/bejne/o6ubx66BXdGxgqw.html Peter's Journey: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hXeLqMeantG9YNY.html

    I feel like the Black Dahlia necklace he buys for MJ is symbolic of the ideal perfection that you mentioned in your video. All throughout the film he keeps talking about this perfect plan to give MJ the necklace and tell her how he feels in the most romantic setting possible (the Eiffel Tower) But in the end the necklace gets broken and he ends up confessing his feelings on a bridge surrounded by wreckage from his fight with Mysterio. But he still ended up getting with MJ because she liked him for who he is, faults and all. He never had to be the perfect romantic partner. Case in point: Peter: I'm sorry it's broken. MJ: I actually like it better broken.

    I really love this version of Spider-Man. He's not a perfect representation of the character but he nails the parts of Spider-Man that matter to me. Homecoming came out when I finished 6th grade and all I wanted to do back then was get out of Middle School, be an adult and drive into a more exciting life. Before Far From Home came out this summer, I was terrified of all the work and pressure I would face in high school. Peter's journey has helped me a lot in my life, teaching me about forging my identity. There's so much more I like about this version of Spidey, but I just like how when I see him, I feel like I'm looking in a mirror.

  • @madisonm.4535

    @madisonm.4535

    I feel the exactly the same way. I have pretty much the same story except Homecoming came out the Summer when I just finished 8th grade and I loved it and then I was seriously struggling and depressed and just wanted to fast forward to College and my career and escape all the toxic people (who were bullying me in the backhanded way of behind your back or next to you in the hallway to someone else and pretend you somehow can't here them but you did and you have the moment of "did they just say that?" and before you can say anything and think "they did say that!" and think of what to say the moment to say anything is gone. It was a lot of the same bullying you see Peter face in Homecoming). Homecoming kind of became my safe place. When I was really sad and depressed I would watch it and it would make me feel less alone and cheer me up. Anyway those were the feelings and my stort and the point that I'm trying to convey is that I totally see what you mean and empathize because the middle school, high school years are tough. For some people the rough points are in middle school and for others its high school. Its rough and I get it and Homecoming is essentially the best movie for people going through that who need to connect and relate with someone going through something similar.

    When I mentioned in a comment section about all the things I personally felt were relatable to me in Far From Home (coming up with subtle ways to sit next to someone on a trip, cringy school announcements, the stress of working without breaks), there were people who practically looked at my personal experiences and said: "No. You're wrong" and then went into detail about how MCU Peter wasn't relatable. From my perspective watching MCU Spidey that's literally me, but a guy and minus Spider powers and some of the origin story. Okay the point is that is me in spirit. I embody the awkward geeky nerdy person and that is literally my high school experience (again minus the Spider powers and super hero stuff). I like how in that focusing on Peter's journey from boy to man, your thesis evokes for me a realization that most of the major MCU heroes started out their character journeys as what many people like to call "man-children." It actually brings into focus a bittersweet, but alternatively satisfying closure to Tony's arc, in that Tony even told Peter in SMHC that he'd hoped Peter would be better than him. By Peter growing up in a timely, even early manner, it satisfies the paternal desires Tony had for him, and even gives Tony a legacy of, however directly or indirectly, making the reality of superheroism better for the next generation and in so doing possibly even reconciling some of Tony's mistakes even after he's gone.

  • @podperson1744

    @podperson1744

    4 жыл бұрын

    That's a good point! Tony's greatest fear was being unable to protect the world and the thungs/people he held dearly. In "raising" Peter, he has ensured that future heroes will become better - I see Spider-Man becoming the new Iron Man, because other heroes will see his faults and struggles, yet he still comes out better at the end. Spider-Man will become a new pillar of the MCU, as he always has been in the comics. But I also think that older heroes will look up to him as well. I can see a scene when the next Thanos comes along, and every hero is down. But then a battered Spider-Man, with a costume torn to shreds, stands up slowly in front of everyone else. And then they rise. Doctor Strange. Black Panther. I apologise if I completely lost your point (I think I did), but i get lost in tangents when talking about Spidey. He means so much to me, and seeing his growth and relationship with other heroes is just... amazing.

    👏🏼. I already loved these films but you helped me see them in a new way which made me love them even more! As someone whose always dealt with insecurity, I connect with the MCU Peter so much. I’ve also lost people close to me that I looked up to so the aspect of living in someone else’s shadow speaks to me as well. Seeing Tom’s Spider-Man constantly reevaluating himself and finding his place in this super hero world that is way bigger than him, and realizing that he indeed has the potential to be just as tall as the proverbial giants around him is such a beautiful thing to behold. Your point about him losing the connection to his ideal self by learning to internalize that view was great and I think really nails home the central theme of these movies. I for one can’t wait for the third film! Also I love how he beats Mysterio by learning to hone in his spider sense, something wholly unique to him, thus looking inside of himself. Small details like that are why I love the MCU.

    Another thing I also found interesting was why Parker didn't want to take his suit to Europe. He feels he needs a break, he wants to be a kid on his vacation and taking the suit just reminds him of his responsibilities, which also ties in with Stark. Stark gave Peter the suit with all these precautions and tech because Stark knows it's his responsibility to watch over Peter. The suit reminds him of his responsibility, it reminds him of what it means to be a man (that man being tony) and he doesn't want to be that, he wants to savor his youth and get the girl of his dreams(it might also be he's scared of dying, which is what happened to Stark he lived up to being Iron Man and he died being a hero). But he knows deep down he can't that's why he has that hesitation when packing. But outside forces are telling him he needs to grow up and that pressure takes a toll on him which is why he hands his responsibilities to Beck who he believes is more capable because he sees a hero in him...a man, but it bites Peter in the ass. So now after the grand finale, he realizes he needs to grow into the man he is afraid of becoming a Spider-Man. Loved this video man you earned a sub.

    I’m a massive Spidey fan(played all the games, watched all the movies and all of the animated series even the ass new one but I’m on and off)and the MCU Spider-Man is my all time favorite Spider-Man adaptation, because it’s doing its own thing and not limiting the story to its source material or lore. People need to understand the comics aren’t always right lol they were written in like the 60’s, sometimes a change in narrative with the change in times is important. For example Tobey’s Spider-Man was a direct representation for the millennials at that time, heck let’s be honest Andrew’s Spider-Man was also a representation of the current millennials at that time, Tom’s Spider-Man is literally following the same pattern in representing youth AT THIS POINT IN TIME(a mixture with millennials but mostly focusing on gen Z). The reason why some people “can’t relate” or relate more with Tobey is because Tobey represents a whole different set of struggles that Tom represents, both portray youth in two different time frames and two different New York’s. For example, my older sister is a millennial and I’m a gen z and we had ENTIRELY different struggle(for some context I’m 18 and she’s 23). A loose example here(I’m trying to some it up so it won’t be as accurate):with millennials money is involved meaning getting a job and being successful etc-basically the physical adversity which causes the mental adversity(Tobey’s Spider-Man dealt with issues like this e.g. being poor etc), with gen z it’s legit about dealing with low self esteems, social isolation etc, it’s not to say we don’t want to be successful but success is second to mental heath and happiness-so basically the mental adversity affecting the physical adversity. Like Imma be honest when my sister was in high school most high schoolers wanted to be successful in medicine, business, law, politics, in my generation that pool of people is decreasing and more people are focused on the creative side of things, but mainly because we can afford to think that way, in the past you couldn’t. Long story short, as someone who was the same age as Peter when his tenure in the MCU started, and a year ahead of Peter at FFH, Peter relates 100% to the kids and youth of my generation, essentially we are all ‘Iron boy JR’ and initially a lot of us usually want to “be” like someone instead of wanting to be someone that people look up to, but eventually we find who we really are and do our own thing. Even the Flash Thompson is portrayed accurately, a lot of times rich kids are popular, not because they are athletes but because they have money and they “want to fit in” so they create an image for their self of what people or media thinks is cool rather than being themselves leading to them not having any true intimate relationships as all are pretty superficial-some have already realized this and others realize this later which is something the upcoming Flash arc is touching up apon. My school(like many others)has a ton of rich kids so I can confirm. The Peter and MJ relationship is honestly the TRUE portrayal of ‘nerd’ couples, it’s being so realistic, nerds honestly don’t give a damn about looks or status, they literally just want someone who like them for them(I’m affiliated with the nerds-I’m more like a jack of all trades so I’m affiliated with everyone but not in one certain social clique), the ideation of everyone wanting the “pretty girl” died a looooooong time ago and this isn’t only for the nerds, most people nowadays go for girls that are well rounded, not just admirable in one aspect. Again Ned is a true interpretation of how bro’s be nowadays. This entire team from the cast to how the school portrays itself is literally a almost uncanny representation of high school now. To end all this off, it’s ok to dislike the new Spider-Man but try to understand it within this generation and context and I guarantee you’ll see it in a different light, especially when you try to also understand the past Spider-Man in their different contexts and time frames and you’ll then have a broader understanding of the symbol of Spider-Man in general. Within each time period, Spider-Man will highlight on societal issues at that point in time.

    I subscribed after this video. Not because it helped me get a link to send Tom-haters to, but because I was starting to hate him to. The similarities to Miles, the missed opportunities of Marc Webb, the larger connections Peter made to big heroes who have slowly become more irrelevant to other Spider-Man stories; I didn't know if "Summer before 9th Grade" me was just ignorant. Then I started watching all of these videos. The dissection of Andrew's/Marc's accuracy to Peter Parker, the literal nostalgia-bait of the Raimi's films (though good nostalgia-bait, ngl), Tom's/Jon's love of everything Spider-Man being reinterpreted for a modern audience. I've seen most of Implicitly Pretentious' Spider-Man videos now and I can't help but feel humbled. I don't really hate anything about Spider-Man now, I'm just invested in how else I can view him.

    @@johnathonhaney8291 Calling MCU Spidey Iron Man Jr. is just so reductive. It utterly ignores the obvious character development and nuance of the films. I'm looking at you, HiTop. "Oh no Spidey has a mentor in Tony Stark! Out of character! Out of character!" Sorry, but if ya'll loved Spidey as much as you claim, you'd know he has ALWAYS admired his peers, sought their respect, and in many cases fanboyed all over them. In his first ever #1, he tries to join the FF for crying out loud. I think Marvel has done far better than I ever would have expected them to with Spidey. He can't exist in a vacuum in the MCU. And for all the crying about him not being in the MCU, you people get your wish only to bitch about it later? I think using Spidey to show how a fledging hero finds his identity in a world of gods, monsters, and super-geniuses in robot armor was a very simply and elegant solution for introducing his so late in the game. A big part of Ultimate Spider,-Man (a comic many fans adore btw) is this very aspect - Peter is brash and naive in those books. He's thrust into a world he doesn't know how to navigate and is always learning shit the hard way. MCU Spidey captures this aspect of the comics amazingly well imo. The entire point of his arc is that he's not Iron Man or any other hero. He has to learn to find himself and take pride in the fact he's his own hero and not worry about living up to expectations he feels he needs to. This is a wonderful play on "with great power, comes great responsibility."

    @@nope5657 Well said...there's another aspect of the Tony/Peter relationship that gets overlooked. One thing folks forget is how Peter was Spiderman for six months before Tony found him. Uncle Ben had been in the ground for a very short amount of time and then here comes his personal idol into his life. Much like an incident with another Peter with the last name of Quill, it filled a gap in his psychology, only to lose it all over again when Tony died. It's what made him prone to Quentin Beck's manipulations because he was trying to repeat what had worked the first time.

    Tbh it was a total mess up cuz I wrote that section last minute when I realised I still had iron man footage in final cut, but looking back on it I'm really shocked that it was timed well enough to sound to sound like a joke, so I'm just going to pretend it was intentional ;)

    Hello I've been watching a few of ur mcu videos and I 100% agree. People should watch more of ur vids because ppl are saying the mcu is just a generic mediocre franchise when yet it's more than that. I love how u see these films in a deeper way. Keep it up 😊

    I have been reading Spider-Man comics ever since I was a kid. This is Spider-Man. My favorite Spider-Man movie is Far From Home. Also, yes, I grew up with the Raimi trilogy but I am not bias from nostalgia like hightopfilms.

    His self image seem to be expressed on his costume as well. His first costume, the simple matte sipderman costume is used predominately throughout the movie over the shiny metallic one he used in endgame. He reverted back to the hero he was when he first started. Like you said, he was recycling his old image, something that doesn't really fit him anymore. It's really amazing how many layers this idea fits into the movie.

    Love the depth you were able to find in this movie. My main problem with it is its all too subtle and implicit. There is so much going on, so many jokes and crazy visuals, that we never get the chance to really notice and process this contrast and development you point out. With every other live action spider-man film, even including the amazing spider-man 2 and homecoming, there are times that really slow the pace so you can ingest the themes. But this movie speeds right by them, making it almost feel like the themes aren't that crucial or even intentional. Even though it has the makings of a deep coming of age movie, the pace and over-stimulation of the film make it feel shallower than any that came before it.

    Too subtle? Nah! Compared with Christopher Nolan's, this is open book.

    @@chengkuoklee5734 Christopher Nolan knows how to slow things down to encourage reflection. He also doesn't make the basic theme hidden, just the further details. The 'Why do we fall Bruce?' line pretty clearly indicates that courage is a core theme of Batman Begins

    Thank you for making such an amazing review on Spider-man and not shadowing Tom Holland's Spidey with Tobey Maguire as most reviewers do :)
