Speaking as someone who lost a pants leg to a NH silage chopper PTO -- thankfully not a leg -- in 1974, the non-rotating shields are a huge improvement. Shouldn't have stepped across it but you get busy and don't always think safety. Especially at 17.

Use a paint pen to mark on the outside of the PTO collar where the splines should line up with it. Makes it easier to line up. Also, if you can find a place to do so, marking both sides of your PTO shaft so you know how which of the 3 ridges line up can also save you time and frustration any time you need to disassemble it.

Wow, you saved me a BUNCH of trouble with this video!!! I'm a 67-year-old woman with significant arthritis and I live alone. I have six acres with a pasture that has to be mowed, in addition to a garden that I use a tractor-mounted tiller. I struggle for HOURS trying to get that d*mn shaft attached! I have a Kubota B3350 and just getting situated behind the thing is a chore, especially for someone who is not exactly slender built. My tractor has a mid-PTO, so I'm going to set it to the mid-PTO and see how much help that is to attach the brush hog shaft. I worked on that hook-up for THREE HOURS last night and finally quit as it was getting dark. I'll stop back and let you know how it went. I'm excited to try this.

Same here. 59 yr old woman, live alone on 87 acre farm with acres of grass to mow and huge garden to till etc. I struggled for years til i figured it out myself two years ago on how to attach the tiller easily and quickly. I thought id check youtube to see if there were any videos on this subject cuz i was actually thinking of making a video myself to help others who might be struggling. But i see its been done. My neighbor struggled with his attachment and i explained it to him, so he was so grateful for the advice. Happy this video is made. 👩🏻‍🌾

Great tip on shifting the PTO to allow it to spin. THANK YOU!!! I've been recovering from cancer treatments for the past year. That's really taken the wind out of my sail and everything seems to be a struggle. Most notably has been hooking up the tiller. Easiest way I've found (I'm going to milk this) was getting my son to do it for me. 😎

It’s worth mentioning that some really old equipment, like my old MF41 sickle mower, has a square pto shaft rather than a triangular one. It is really important to make sure your u-joints are lined up correctly in the correct phase with that set up.

As always, love your videos. The one way only splines in the driveshaft are usually referred to as oriented or master splined. The reason for this is to keep the cross of the universal joints timed in alignment. Unaligned universal joints would cause a terrible vibration and soon destroy them. I lubricate my driveshaft splines and connection splines with anti-seize compound. It seems to work very well.

Very nice video sir. We run quite a bit of equipment with PTO shafts. The worst we have is a John Deere HX15. Pretty heavy shaft. We actually built a cable that loops over the ears of our quick hitch. We raise it up and use it to level the shaxt with the PTO and then slide it on. They should pass legislation that requires a quick hitch on every tractor sold! New subscriber just because of this great video.

What I really like about the Tractor PTO link is that it protects the spline on the tractor at the gearbox. I realize it sits back in a good bit, but it's nice knowing if you were to back into something or drop something or something were to fall on it, the spline is covered and protected. Very helpful video, I never thought to shift the PTO into the midrange so I could manually turn it. Purchased a new 1025R with the 3049 tiller and it has been a bear to hook up since I bought it, I believe you solved many of my issues. Thank you so much for the helpful tips and for continuing to provide good content. I will definitely be purchasing the tractor pto link.

Really good video! That quick hitch is good, but if you have attachments of varying widths, it can be a problem. I use the Pat's lower lift arm quick hitch system and I love it. Half the price as well. Let's you still have the freedom to adjust the width of your lower lift arm position for any attachment. The only drawback is that it does nothing for the upper link connection, but that's usually the easier of the 3 point anyway. As far as the PTO connections, if you keep everything lubed properly as mentioned in the video, it really makes everything easier. I can't justify spending that much for a PTO quick connect when it's usually not that much of an issue for me.

I could not agree more. Sometimes connecting a 3 point can be a bit of work. But PTO connection is easy. This product just adds a step that seems like it makes it more difficult. It also puts the connection point where it is less guarded and places the operator or anyone near the pto connection at far greater danger of getting tangled in the shaft.

Tim, I like seeing the products that Courtney offers, but I'm for the most part with you. That is a crap ton of money for a super minor convenience. It reminds me of the single point loader attachment that's out there for $600-700. I mean sure attaching one point is easier than hooking up my four loader couplers, but dang, it only takes me about 10-15 seconds. I think I can handle it.:-) I'm so cheap I don't even have a quick hitch....BUT I do have a hydraulic top link and while it was pricey, it has been extremely convenient to use.

Agree, the pto connection is the easiest part of the 3pt hookup. You still have to line up this device. I guess its easier cause you can see your points. Some people may struggle with that especially if they’re older or new to tractors and stuff. Quick hitch would be nice to have though.

I am 180 out from y’all. The quick hitch is the solution in search of a problem. With the telescoping extendable arms and hydraulic top link I have zero issues hooking up. The pto is a pita however and I may well invest in this device. Pulling a collar while pushing in a greasy, well lubricated, cramped environment always takes forever and results in skinned knuckles and frustration.

Thanks for the video. I may have to cut mine shafts. But they are not going over each other smooth at all. I may not even be able to get it back apart and I greased it well.

Your education and coverage of tractors is great. I just ordered my first tractor, a Solectrac compact electric tractor. Given your focus on John Deere maybe you can convince Deere to do a video on what their future electric tractor lineup looks like.

I bought the PTO Link for one of my tractors. Loved it and went back and bought two more for a couple more of my tractors. Im an older guy and believe me it makes it a lot easier that wrestling with shaft to get on the spline. I first learned of these here and thought I would give it a try. Im glad I did. Highly recommended.

Just ordered the tractor PTO Link. Can't believe I've been struggling with this. GWT worked perfect for my discount. Once I get it, I'll try to remember to comment back on my thoughts. I too have a 4066R and although the 'R' makes things so much easier, (being able to control the tractor from the back control panel) eliminating the effort all together is the ticket. At least I hope so.

I've had my eye on PTO link for a couple of years and lately have been considering the Deere version, but your quick comment about the difference and your demo of the installation convinced me to order the PTO link just now. Connecting the shaft is an awkward, cramped affair on my 2038R. Discovering your trick to release the tractor end a while back helped a lot, as did fully extending my hydraulic top link to give me more space, but from time to time it is still a pain. I expect the PTO link to make this process quick and easy every time. It seems that delivery is backed up and I may be waiting a couple of months to feel the joy. Will try to be patient!

@@clintbennetsen6392 Yes, I am happy with it for the most part. One of the connecting pins is a loose piece, so I temporarily lost it (until I bought a couple of replacements, at which time it turned up, of course). Now I have a specific place on the back of the tractor where I put it until the attachment is in place and ready for the pin. When nothing is connected to the pto, I keep the pin in its hole in the tractor side of the ptolink.

@@SethKrieger, I was thinking that little connector pin would be easy to lose or misplace. I saw you can buy extras for like $7 each. Glad you found a solution to keep it handy. Thanks!

As a new tractor owner - TAKE MY MONEY! I'm ordering that PTO quick hitch asap. My dealer dropped my tractor off and the instructions he gave me on attaching the PTO for my rotary mower was 'don't get your hands stuck in it and rip your fingers off.' Duly noted ;-) This system looks a lot easier! I'll continue to binge watch this channel so skill up my tractor awareness. I'm especially concerned about safety so thanks for all the work you put into making these videos! Doing the lorrrds work!

Rotary cutter is one where attaching the 3 pt first and lifting the mower deck will make PTO attachment way easier. If the deck is sitting on the ground, the blades can be stopped from turning by grass or the ground, thus making rotating the PTO shaft really difficult if not impossible.
