The STRANGEST Trade in NFL Draft HISTORY

Спорт

At the 1974 NFL Draft, Commissioner Pete Rozelle had to pause the draft for 30 minutes because after a trade between the Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints, both teams thought they were on the clock. The Lions thought that the Saints gave up their pick as part of the trade, while the Saints said they didn't. This is the crazy story behind what has to be the most bizarre trade in the history of the NFL Draft.

Even better: The New York Mets traded Harry Chiti to the Cleveland Indians for "a player to be named later." However, the teams couldn't agree on the other player, so the Indians sent Chiti back to the Mets. Thus, Harry Chiti was the only player in the history of sports to be traded for himself.

To be fair, pass blocking before 1978 was pretty much impossible. The NFL implemented a rule change in 1978 which allowed offensive linemen to extend their arms and use their open hands while pass-blocking. We take it for granted now, but just imagine trying to stop those elite athletes on the 70's, with your only your forearms and elbows.

@@scorpiusbalthazar4327 - As defenders improved, the offense was struggling to keep up and something had to be done. No disrespect to the legendary Deacon Jones, but he helped change the game in many ways, but the game was also a lot easier for him than it is for today's pass rushers. He played from 1961-1974. The rules change was 1978. He never had to face an offensive tackle who could block with his hands. Jones also invented and perfected the head slap, which was also rightfully banned in 1977, three years after he retired. People don't like to admit it, but Jones was such a great pass rusher not ONLY because he was talented - which he was - but also because offensive linemen literally were not allowed to lay a finger on him and he was allowed to abuse them by slapping them in the ear hole. One has to wonder how good of a pass rusher he would have been in his career under modern rules. No, not modern players, just take modern rules back in time.
