I always look forward to your reviews! They are so in dept! It would be even more awesome to have a book cam as the main focus to see the sections of the books while you are talking about it. Then it would be golden!

In my other setup I have that as part of the setup, but right now I’m recording at home and there’s less room for it. But it’s something do appreciate. We’ll see if I can figure something out.

We just started playing The Strange about a month ago and it’s been a blast. The players started out on Earth and are now exploring the land of Oz. Making it Oz “from the books” as opposed to Oz “from the 1939 movie” means the players don't automatically know who is who which is fun for me as the GM.😈 Highly recommended (as are all the Cypher System games from Monte Cook Games).

Wowsers. Your explanation is good but I would still doubt my ability (as a GM or player) to do the quick math at 21:25. Fascinating system though.

It’s really easy, actually. You give a level, and then work on how that level is changed… and only multiply at the end. It’s way fast…

If you can multiply and subtract by 3, it's easy-peasy. Every task or creature has a Difficulty Level (DL) from 1 to 10 determined by the GM or in a book. Multiply it by 3 to get the Target Number (TN) you need to hit on a 1d20. But wait! A DL of 7 (x3) is 21! How am I going to get that on a 1d20? Therein lies the main mechanic of the game. Skills (things you're good at), Assets, (useful stuff you have or a helping hand), and using Effort (extra oomph that costs you a bit of life/mana) all lower the Difficulty Level so your odds of beating it with a 1d20 increase. This is how you can have your Cap vs Thanos Endgame moment against a Level 10 (TN 30) being. You can use a max of 2 Skills, 2 Assets, and up to 6 Levels of Effort (you typically get 1 per Character Tier). That's 10 possible easings (at Tier 6) of the DL that *could* (RNGesus willing) turn a TN 30 world-ender into an insta-kill. Or at least lower it enough to beat it on your roll. And that's just combat. Cyphers, one-use miracle devices, can change the game in creative and unexpected ways for an amazing narrative experience.

Predates the unification of the Cypher system. The rules system in The Strange is obsolete and outdated by the latest version of the Cypher System core rules and to be honest, in the games of The Strange that I'm running I've gone over to the newer core rules and used used the setting. An updated version of the setting should be available from MCG some time this or early next year.

@@DMTalesTTRPG A lot of reballance work took place to make purely physical fighter type characters more attractive to play. The system for managing the effects of wearing armor is completely overhauled. Introduction of new systems such as player intrusions gives more narrative power to the players and removes the often cited impression that the game encouraged an adversarial player vs gm dynamic. The use of four rather than three core types gives more build diversity. I could go on. The core mechanics remained largely the same, and the design principles likewise, though they are much better execured upon in the revised second edition of the core rules. Cyper is overall my most favoured game system, and I've played and run every version of it's rules from Numinera, The Strange and Predation through to the first edition of the unified core rules and now the second edition of those, and it's become consistantly better ballanced and more well refined with each iteration. The Strange was the second game they did in the line, and was a big improvement in balance even over Numinera, but it doesn't compare to the newest edition of the core rules for just how slickly it's put together.
