    Cypher System has a special place in my heart. I read a number of games/ rule systems and for many reasons I come back to Cypher. I grab some mechanics I like from other systems and just attach them to my world when needed. Cypher is just a great balance between narrative and simulation play for me. Great video.

    "The Stars Are Fire" is definitely the sci-fi/space opera equivalent for Cypher. I also picked up the horror one, Stay Alive, but only did a quick peruse thus far. Probably won't ever use the example setting in each of them, but I can see why they were included as an example. Since these genre expansions are primarily adding more to the already significant toolbox in the core book.

    Empathy for others is in short supply in our "me first" culture. I suppose that we have to start somewhere, but a lot of people find "preachy" entertainment offputting. Good review vid of an interesting product in a franchise tat deserves more attention.

  • @DMTalesTTRPG

    @DMTalesTTRPG

    That’s the point, it’s not “preachy,” though as an actual preacher that’s not a designation I level on folks. It’s baked into the setting. Most folks wouldn’t notice it because it’s how the characters need to function to survive. I only noticed it because I live on the edge of that faith/secular divide where I’m often having metaphorical grenades tossed at me from both directions.

    I'm also not a big fan of high-gloss paper. However, there are different levels. I think the lower-gloss type is called "satin", or some such, which has less glare but still adds some extra protection to the paper. I generally like it although there's still seems to be a range of variance depending on manufacturer.

  • @DMTalesTTRPG

    @DMTalesTTRPG

    Yah. And MCG’s gloss isn’t oppressive. I’m just about the flat paper, anymore, so it’ll probably be my ongoing mini-rant as a fun thing for me.

    If you want the trappings of fantasy classes, grab Mortal Fantasy. It gives you modified types that give you some D&D-esque class abilities, instead of a "paladin" basically having to take works miracles to get lay on hands.

    Is Mortal Fantasy for Cypher System?

  • @s.m.4995

    @s.m.4995

    9 күн бұрын

    @@DMTalesTTRPG Yeah, Mortal Fantasy sticks fairly close to the types they based each class on, while moving certain signature foci abilities into the type itself. This allows players to more freely choose their foci while still feeling like a traditional D&D archetype. My players started enjoying my Forgotten Realms campaign a lot more after we redrew up their characters using Mortal Fantasy types. Now instead of a warrior who works miracles, we have a paladin who sculpts hard light. This player now has a lot more utility in and out of combat while still keeping some of the healing capability that he chose works miracles for in the first place.

    Foki, not fosi. It is from Latin and there is no soft "c" sound in Latin. To use the character creator, you do have to have an account with Monte Cook Games. It is free, but you do have to log in. It covers character creation for many different genres. However, I was disappointed that they didn't include Numenera or The Strange among the core rulebooks they use. In the character creator, the race (species) is separate from the descriptor.

  • @DMTalesTTRPG

    @DMTalesTTRPG

    Numenera is coming, but their specific IPs are goign to have a charge to access. I’ll go back and look for the species/race - since having that second descriptor is kinda important. I’ve had the “fo-si/fo-ki” discussion before. In US English both are acceptable pronunciations, even if the latter is more historically accurate. I’ve said the former my whole life so I’m probably not going to change just because it’s hard-wired. Thanks for watching!
