The Strange Science of the Impossible Burger | WIRED

Ғылым және технология

It's called the Impossible Burger and it looks, feels, tastes and smells like ground beef, even though it's made entirely of plants. It's all thanks to science and genetically engineered yeast. WIRED explores how close it comes to the real thing and if it's 100% safe.
The story of the fake meat on a mission to change the world with one part soy plant, one part genetically engineered yeast-and one part activism. Ingredients include wheat protein, to give the burger that firmness and chew. And potato protein, which allows the burger to hold water and transition from a softer state to a more solid state during cooking.

@THE ORIGINAL PROFESSOR CHAOS As of July 24th, 2018, the FDA provided a no-questions letter to Impossible Foods accepting the unanimous conclusion of a third-party panel of experts who found the ingredients of the Impossible Burger to be safe to eat. You are wrong, leghemoglobin was approved by the FDA for consumption almost a year ago. As for your other "points", the toxicity of any chemical compound can be increased or decreased when mixed with other compounds. Toxic substances can become non-toxic when mixed with other substances. Perhaps you should have spent less time stealing erasers, and more time paying attention in chemistry class. Enjoy your caps lock and clogged arteries.

Why do some people feel such passionate hatred towards this burger? They can't be all climate change deniers, they can't be all passionate meat lovers, so what is it? Anyway, if this burger already tastes better than most cheap burgers, we can probably totally make artificially synthesized burgers in the future that taste better than any real meat that could possibly be bred. With technology we can someday make things so tasty we can't even imagine. Next up: impossible cheese

THIS is a good idea and a venture that needs to be undertaken. If we can remove the need for "organic" or "traditional" beef that requires growing a cow to maturity, then we would not only be helping the environment and saving cow lives, but also the...."less liberal" goals (that is, if the idea of doing what's best for the planet and saving the lives of millions of innocent animals deeply upsets you for whatever reason) of cheaper food production, and an alternative food source for areas that are incapable of rearing livestock effectively. All in all, it's literally good for everyone on earth..........except people in the beef industry.

He's just tried it and as a chef, he's probably got a longer review, but they truncated it down to next to nothing. He probably had more to say. Though that's not to say he did or did not like it, it's just some very tricky editing.

You can't tell by his expression and the 2nd bite he took that he, a chef, liked the taste of the burger? He can't describe it to you, go order one if you're curious.. If you watched the video and understood what they said about heme iron, you'd understand that it tastes A LOT like real meat, since the thing that tastes good in meat is the heme iron, and not actually the meat itself. So plants that have heme iron WILL taste really close to actual meat. You must have not listened closely enough to the scientist who were explaining this.

The actual problems with GMO's is the risk of them spreading in the wild or through the use of terminatorgenes the control the producer of the seeds have over farmers. dunno, a "lifetime" is a LONG time for the food industry, there are many things we eat today that our parents couldnt even imagine when they were kids, things will evolve, so while not in a decade, dont be surprised if in 20 or 30 years this not only becomes a staple, but also out sell normal meat.

yeah .. you're probably gonna be fine eating meat during your life time but future generations will not have that option. The way it's made, it's just not sustainable and developing countries with huge populations will be interested in consumig the way we do. What then ? We have to start finding alternatives now, you can't just ignore the problem like climate change was ignored, look at where we are now.

Poor people around the world all want to imitate the American lifestyle, because they see it everyday in pop culture. The biggest way they do it is through American fast food chains, which apart from India serves mostly beef. Most fast food burgers are already using meat patties full of vegetable-based fillers to keep costs down, but this "Impossible Burger" is all filler, which can potentially push costs even further down. Expect future "beef-flavored" burgers with mostly plant-based Heme, and 1% real meat so meat-eaters will feel good about their choices.

Being vegan isn't about not liking the taste of meat buddy, it's about caring for sentient beings and the environment. The meat industry is just unethical. Vegans can like the taste of meat and not like the consequences of eating meat. This is why people want to create substitutes.

I'm not a vegetarian and I'm not sure I'll ever become one, although it's not completely off the table either. However, anything I can do to comfortable reduce my meat intake while still getting the nutrition I need is worth the effort, both for me and for the planet. I just tried the Impossible Burger for the first time a couple of days ago. I ate it by itself, without any fixings or anything, and I have to say I was impressed. I'd say it tasted about 90-95% like beef while having a 5-10% soy taste, whish is fine. I liked the Beyond Burger when I tried it, although it tastes nothing like meat to me, and I'd say that 5-10% was like the Beyond Burger. That said, the Beyond Burger upset my stomach a bit. Not sure if it was coincidence or if it actually caused the distress, but I never ate it again. Conversely, the Impossible Burger didn't upset my stomach at all and it tasted pretty great. Earlier today, I tried another Impossible Burger patty, this time with a brioche bun, condiments, and some spinach and cheese (no, not vegan, but vegetarian), and I have to say, it tasted almost completely like a real burger. I think the condiments and bread obscured the soy taste, leaving only the meat-like taste. I'm still a little iffy on GMOs and I'd like to see more longitudinal studies, but so far, so good.
