I'm older and trying to recover from surgery; the nurses say upon visits: "oh, you're watching films where the actors actually act", and I agree Much appreciation and respect for meaningful films depicting history and how differently things used to be when defining good entertainment decades ago!

Gosh, this was so good!!! So many old films have these cookie-cutter roles where the characters have no shades of grey... They're either all good or all bad. I love the nuance here in all the characters. They all have different motivations and back-stories that create really fascinating interactions. I'd never seen this one before, but I'm definitely going to watch it again!

Janis Wilson was a successful American child actress of the 1940s. Her mom got her dentist to put bands on her teeth in order for her to win her first movie role, as Tina Durrance, the child unloved by her mother in 'Now Voyager'. Bette Davis became so fond of Janis she persuaded Warner Bros to cast her as her daughter in her next movie 'Watch on the Rhine'. Janis retired from acting after starring in six movies, aged 18. She met her future husband on the Warner Bros lot aged 12 while making 'Now Voyager'. They married when she was 25 and had a son together. In 1996 Janis announced she was working on a book about her years as a child actress, and her special relationship with Bette Davis. Sadly it did not materialise. She died of a stroke aged 73, in 2003.

The good dramas tend to be streaming television series now, though even they have a tendency to go over the top. Movies are mostly geared toward a pretty juvenile audience which has zero attention span and eats up effects. No doubt there are independent productions which are still excellent, they just don't get distributed much.

Well, to be fair, Hollywood has always been a cesspit in one way or other. However, it used to be a cesspit that could produce great art. Now, it mostly produces crap, and has the audacity to scantimoniously wag its finger at the audience, despite it being one of the most venal places on Earth. Sorry, I just felt that I need to get that off my chest.

Good story and believable characters, top level acting from Barbara Stanwyck, Van Heflin, Kirk Douglas and beautiful Lizabeth Scott. Kirk Douglas lived to be over 100, a remarkably long life. Lizabeth Scott had an amazing voice. She died aged 92 in 2015. Barbara Stanwyck was 82 when she passed but sadly Heflin was only 62 when he died. I think the aunt was played by the same lady who played Mrs Danvers from Hitchcock's "Rebecca" in 1940. Hadn't seen this one before, but it was well worth watching. Thanks for the upload.

TRIVIA TIME: The two actors who play Young Walter and Young Sam are Mickey Kuhn and Darryl Hickman respectively. They are both still with us today. RIP to our beloved Kirk Douglas. This was Kirk Douglas debut film at the recommendation of the fantastic Lauren Bacall. This is Van Heflin's first film after surviving a three year hitch with the U.S. Army Air Corps' Ninth Air Force as a combat cameraman in Europe during WWII. ADDENDUM: Darryl Hickman's brother, Dwayne Hickman, most known for his girl-crazy and cool portrayal of Dobie Gillis is also still with us!!! If you haven't seen a Dobie Gillis show, its' well worth watching. Especially for Dobie's very special bongo playing soul-patch sporting best friend, Maynard G. Krebs who is played hilariously by Bob Denver, RIP to Mr. Denver.

The first time I started to watch this movie, years ago, I lost interest after the first few minutes. I'm glad I gave it another chance now because I stuck with it and loved it. The opening scenes don't seem like a film noir, which is why I turned it off the first time. But after those establishing flashback scenes the movie becomes a terrific movie with all the noir elements. The troubled protagonist and the femme fatale are played to perfection by Heflin and Stanwyck, and Douglas and Scott are also perfect in their roles. The atmosphere, pacing, cinematography and music score are all wonderful. Thanks for posting it.
