Smash-Up! The Story of a Woman (1947) SUSAN HAYWARD
Фильм және анимация
Stars: Susan Hayward, Lee Bowman, Eddie Albert, Marsha Hunt
Director: Stuart Heisler
Original Story: Dorothy Parker/Frank Cavett
In this gender reversal of "A Star is Born," a talented nightclub singer trades her career for marriage to a budding singer/songwriter. He becomes a big star; she has a baby but soon falls into alcoholism. According to Hollywood gossip, this is a thinly disguised re-telling of Bing Crosby and his first wife, the singer-actress Dixie Lee.

As a little boy, watching old B&W movies on Sat evenings, I fell in love with Susan Hayward. She was an incredible and mesmerizing actress and persona. She was a favorite of my mother's. She so often played women with real problems and real lives. It is always a delight to come across her work. This is especially a great film.

Years ago, I knew a guy down South who took care of 'Mrs. Chalkley" (Susan Hayward's married name), as she was dying. He said she was a very gentle woman, quite frail toward the end, due to her illness. My friend Mark, a critical care nurse, actually resembled one of her sons (from her marriage to Jess Barker). He remembers Susan Hayward with great fondness....

I have been in love with Susan Hayward since I was 6 years old. I am 68 now and this movie is one of her great ones, just like 'Back Street " and "I want to live". Long ago Susan had a movie out with Joey Heatherton. I can't find the movie "Back Street" or the movie with Joey. Heatherton. Does anyone know a place where I can get them?

Old film actresses were absolutely glamorous. I love the fashion in those days too! Exquisite, elegant.
This was the year I was born (1947). Such great movies were made back then; I love black and white photography . Susan was so beautiful.
I watched old bw movies with my great-grandmother. Now here I sit watching these great films again as a grandma myself. Time goes by fast. Thank you for this film.
Susan Hayward was one class act, even playing a 'flawed' character; she was golden.
I'm guessing those who seek these type movies can't stand what passes as films today..I love these type of movies due to the fact there's more substance, and above all there good, clean and honest films.

There are good films and bad ones from every era. The good ones are remembered. The bad ones forgotten. Good films are still being made, although perhaps not in Hollyrock. Just takes more digging and dedication to find them.

These movies are good because of a few things: first off, the actually have a story plot, also good clean language, most of all respected actors/actresses. Glad we all have access to them. 👍
I don't usually watch alot of dramas , real life is drama enough . A movie like this is worth watching more than once as it sends a message to those who know the grasp of alcohol . I walked with a different crutch , booze was just the cherrie on top . It took many years to figure out what I should have known all along . Personal demons affect everyone you care about . Please forgive my soapbox .
Susan Hayward earned her first Oscar nomination for this performance, after 10 years of bit parts and supporting roles. 11 years, and several nominations later, She finally won Best Actress for "I Want To Live". She richly deserved her Academy Award.

Powerful portrayal of the lives of many. As a story told, it doesn't get much better than this. Two thumbs up.
This is the perfect example of how fame and fortune doesn't always work out to well for everyone involved . While being a sad story, it's a good movie .

I love these old classic movies. I graduated high school in 1964 and I wore a girdle to hold my stockings up. I could not stand a garter belt. Women had hour glass figures back then. But alas along came pantyhose, pants and jogging suits and our figures became a thing of the past. I loved the dresses, crinoline hoop petticoats and hats they wore in Gone With The Wind. Wish I could go back to the 50’s and 60’s. Much better time to live than now even with cell phones, computers and all the other technology in today’s world.

My dads favourite actress and he insisted I was named Susan after her!
This is a phenomenal film that far from sugarcoats the hideous soul sucking disease of alcoholism. Thank you for positing such a brilliant film of the cunning and powerful allure of that first drink.. For True alcoholics as they say in the classic film..Days OF Wine And Roses... For a true human being who suffers with the acceptance of understanding why they are unable to drink like others do socially.. "One is too many and a hundred is never enough."
my Mum had a great love of old movies and she passed it on to me. Nothing like old Hollywood movies.
My two favorite actresses..Susan Hayward and Bette Davis.

She was my Dad’s favorite actress. When one of her films was shown Dad so enjoyed the experience.
Good story addressing the difficult issue of alcoholism, but also the problem women had back then of having to give up their career for their husbands. Susan Hayward is excellent, can see why she got an Oscar nomination for this performance.
Powerful, moving and captivating performance by stunning screen siren, Susan Hayward. Loved the costumes and all of the musical numbers. Great film from the 'Golden Age of Hollywood'!
Grace charm and talent the golden days of the past. Classic movies.evergreen.
It is not just the alcoholic that suffers ,every body that lives with them does too! And not just the years they drink or the time you live with them ! It never goes away! My dad ruined my whole family . I had two brothers and one sister who did the same.
Another absolutely phenomenal performance by Susan Hayward.
One of the my favorite actresses from the golden age of Hollywood. My favorite film she ever did was “I’ll cry tomorrow” and I feel she should’ve won aka Oscar for that role. She’s so overlooked!

Back in the day (1947), alcoholism (among women at least) was not something you spoke about. Ironically, Susan Hayward, a real fave with me.... would give a stellar performance as Lillian Roth in I'LL CRY TOMORROW. Many years sober myself, I like to look back at cinema's treatment of this: COME FILL THE CUP (which I heartily recommend), DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES, and the stunning LOST WEEKEND.More modern films: LEAVING LAS VEGAS, IRONWEED, and WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN. All have something to say about alcohol. And we drunks - got plenty of company, onscreen..and off!! One day at a time, guys. :-))

I just love how this film carefully analyses the subtleties of a relationship based on an emotional dependancy tragically leading to substance abuse of alcohol.
Beautiful talented Susan Hayward..
That's why they call them vices; once inside their claw like grips its so hard to escape. Too much leisure can kill you. An idle mind is the Devil's workshop. My sermonizing aside this was a superb movie. Susan Hayward was a consummate actor!
Susan Hayward never disappoints! Never seen a picture of hers that wasn't quality! A very underrated actress.
What another wonderful movie.. I love the old b/w movies there is nothing like them today..Thank you for sharing another great movie..
This actress was so elegant and poised in all her productions of her movie roles
Ah yes. I am from that era. And before. We wore a suit, hat, heels, white gloves, and of course, a string of pearls. No cig hanging from the lips. Dinner and dancing....formal attire. Always a dress. Never a pant suit. exquisite hair style, correct makeup, and never a cuss word in public. No tattoos, or pierced lip, nose, and below. Those days are gone forever...however, I didn't change. :-)

Thank you for posting this film.Being a HUGE Susan Hayward fan I could kick myself for missing this one until now.Another superb performance , as far as I am concern Susan is ranked up there with the Golden era of actresses-- Bette ,Katherine, Joan, Barbara but somehow overshadowed. In my opinion no actress could play "Hit the gutter alcoholic" as well as Susan, this movie and as Lillian Roth in I'll Cry Tomorrow , two powerful performances .I have been lucky to build my own Susan Hayward DVD collection , I will have to add this one to it , for down the road when I curl up on the couch with a big bowl of popcorn and enjoy my Susan Hayward movie fest. ....RIP Great One-your legend lives on in Celluloid.

Susan Hayward was one of the best actresses of Hollywood ..very under rated as others of her time . .. She is a histrionic genius of acting ...honest in her emotional performance of deep deep feelings ..Very unique!!.. Watching in 2022. I have seen this movie several times. At 74 years old, l am still enjoying these incredible movies. Susan Hayward , one of my favorite actresses, and gorgeous
Marsha Hunt who plays Martha Gray, Elliott's Secretary. who is now 101 years old. Really enjoyed the film always liked Susan Hayward. And remember Eddie Albert from my childhood days in the TV show Green Acres. But have to admit, absolutely hated that song they played over and over throughout the film. Now find my self humming it to myself. Thank you for sharing.
Oh, but more to the point. I had a sister who was ten years older than I, and I adored her. She was completely addicted to alcohol and a very heavy smoker. She had smoked continuously since she was 13 years old. I never saw a picture of her without a cigarette in her hand. She joined Alcoholics Anonymous and had seven years of sobriety behind her before the lung cancer from her smoking killed her. On Saturday afternoon the emergency room doctor asked her if she was going to smoke until she died and she said that she guessed she would. And she did, because she died early Sunday afternoon. I was holding her hands when she took her last breath. She was only in her mid sixties. When I think about her being gone it hurts my heart. 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔

I haven't seen this movie in decades and forgot how good it was, including the music. And I agree "Life can be beautiful" is a wonderful song. I've heard it elsewhere too, but can't think of where. In fact, all of the music is good. The singing cowboy songs were good too, though they sounded like thousands of others of the era. But that's not really a bad thing.
Very important and beautiful film. It reminds me the story of the recent film "Maestro" (2023) with the story of Leonard Bernstein and his wife (actress). There is always a problem when a woman loves so much to loose herself, and in the same time her partner is a narcissist, thinking only about himself, his personal success and pleasure. Great lesson given in this film, when she understands that the problem is that she "lost her self respect" and turn back to stand again for herself!
Fabulous movie, best actress ever. Love her so much .
When you're love is so strong it's blinding 🤓I love her silver party dress is to die for 🤩🌟🌟🌟
