Smash-Up! The Story of a Woman (1947) SUSAN HAYWARD

Фильм және анимация

Stars: Susan Hayward, Lee Bowman, Eddie Albert, Marsha Hunt
Director: Stuart Heisler
Original Story: Dorothy Parker/Frank Cavett
In this gender reversal of "A Star is Born," a talented nightclub singer trades her career for marriage to a budding singer/songwriter. He becomes a big star; she has a baby but soon falls into alcoholism. According to Hollywood gossip, this is a thinly disguised re-telling of Bing Crosby and his first wife, the singer-actress Dixie Lee.

As a little boy, watching old B&W movies on Sat evenings, I fell in love with Susan Hayward. She was an incredible and mesmerizing actress and persona. She was a favorite of my mother's. She so often played women with real problems and real lives. It is always a delight to come across her work. This is especially a great film.

Years ago, I knew a guy down South who took care of 'Mrs. Chalkley" (Susan Hayward's married name), as she was dying. He said she was a very gentle woman, quite frail toward the end, due to her illness. My friend Mark, a critical care nurse, actually resembled one of her sons (from her marriage to Jess Barker). He remembers Susan Hayward with great fondness....

I have been in love with Susan Hayward since I was 6 years old. I am 68 now and this movie is one of her great ones, just like 'Back Street " and "I want to live". Long ago Susan had a movie out with Joey Heatherton. I can't find the movie "Back Street" or the movie with Joey. Heatherton. Does anyone know a place where I can get them?

I don't usually watch alot of dramas , real life is drama enough . A movie like this is worth watching more than once as it sends a message to those who know the grasp of alcohol . I walked with a different crutch , booze was just the cherrie on top . It took many years to figure out what I should have known all along . Personal demons affect everyone you care about . Please forgive my soapbox .

I love these old classic movies. I graduated high school in 1964 and I wore a girdle to hold my stockings up. I could not stand a garter belt. Women had hour glass figures back then. But alas along came pantyhose, pants and jogging suits and our figures became a thing of the past. I loved the dresses, crinoline hoop petticoats and hats they wore in Gone With The Wind. Wish I could go back to the 50’s and 60’s. Much better time to live than now even with cell phones, computers and all the other technology in today’s world.

Thank you for positing such a brilliant film of the cunning and powerful allure of that first drink.. For True alcoholics as they say in the classic film..Days OF Wine And Roses... For a true human being who suffers with the acceptance of understanding why they are unable to drink like others do socially.. "One is too many and a hundred is never enough."

Back in the day (1947), alcoholism (among women at least) was not something you spoke about. Ironically, Susan Hayward, a real fave with me.... would give a stellar performance as Lillian Roth in I'LL CRY TOMORROW. Many years sober myself, I like to look back at cinema's treatment of this: COME FILL THE CUP (which I heartily recommend), DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES, and the stunning LOST WEEKEND.More modern films: LEAVING LAS VEGAS, IRONWEED, and WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN. All have something to say about alcohol. And we drunks - got plenty of company, onscreen..and off!! One day at a time, guys. :-))

Marsha Hunt who plays Martha Gray, Elliott's Secretary. who is now 101 years old. Really enjoyed the film always liked Susan Hayward. And remember Eddie Albert from my childhood days in the TV show Green Acres. But have to admit, absolutely hated that song they played over and over throughout the film. Now find my self humming it to myself. Thank you for sharing.

Oh, but more to the point. I had a sister who was ten years older than I, and I adored her. She was completely addicted to alcohol and a very heavy smoker. She had smoked continuously since she was 13 years old. I never saw a picture of her without a cigarette in her hand. She joined Alcoholics Anonymous and had seven years of sobriety behind her before the lung cancer from her smoking killed her. On Saturday afternoon the emergency room doctor asked her if she was going to smoke until she died and she said that she guessed she would. And she did, because she died early Sunday afternoon. I was holding her hands when she took her last breath. She was only in her mid sixties. When I think about her being gone it hurts my heart. 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔

I haven't seen this movie in decades and forgot how good it was, including the music. And I agree "Life can be beautiful" is a wonderful song. I've heard it elsewhere too, but can't think of where. In fact, all of the music is good. The singing cowboy songs were good too, though they sounded like thousands of others of the era. But that's not really a bad thing.

Very important and beautiful film. It reminds me the story of the recent film "Maestro" (2023) with the story of Leonard Bernstein and his wife (actress). There is always a problem when a woman loves so much to loose herself, and in the same time her partner is a narcissist, thinking only about himself, his personal success and pleasure. Great lesson given in this film, when she understands that the problem is that she "lost her self respect" and turn back to stand again for herself!

Eddie Albert was the real musical star of this movie. But he didn’t get the chance to sing. He started out in musicals and was wonderful. His “September Song” is the best. Look it up.

Thanks Pizza. Good one Shows how social phobia went under the radar back then. If ahe could have simply said "i dont like crowds of people" to her hubby. .however he seemed to take control of everything leaving nothing for her to do plus never being home.and being so insensitive.. so that would have been a trigger anyways.I Always loved Susan Hayward. She was so great in this role !!
