The Story of "The Next Big Thing" Brock Lesnar (2002)

Спорт

Wrestling Bios presents The Story of "The Next Big Thing" Brock Lesnar (2002).
Brock Lesnar made a sudden impact on the WWF when he made his debut the night after WrestleMania X8. Brock had a truly outstanding amateur wrestling career, becoming the NCAA Division 1 Heavyweight Champion in 2000. With his natural athletic pedigree, Brock Lesnar was approached by Vince McMahon and the WWF to begin work as a professional wrestler. Brock signed his WWF contract in 2000, going on to train at OVW with guys like John Cena and Randy Orton in order to sharpen his wrestling skills.
When Brock made his first televised appearances in the WWF, he made people take notice. With Paul Heyman at his side, the "Next Big Thing" completely destroyed everything in his path, leading to a 2002 King of the Ring victory and, in a matter of mere months, Brock Lesnar went to Summerslam where he defeated The Rock to become the WWE Undisputed Champion.
This video takes a look at Brock Lesnar's early WWF / WWE days, from his debut right up to his first WWE championship win. Matches and topics include:
00:00 - Brock Lesnar before WWE
03:44 - Brock makes an impact on Raw
06:59 - The Hardy Boyz vs Brock Lesnar
12:45 - Brock wins the 2002 King of the Ring
16:34 - Brock vs Rock at Summerslam 2002
- Much More!

IDK about the analogy but Jim Cornette had an eye for talent and developing them. Worst thing the WWE did was go with their own developmental in Florida. Yeah there are some talented guys out of FCW or NXT...but are there any Randy Ortons? Cenas?

I loved Lesnar in his first WWE run. An absolute beast in the ring, just as athletic and technical as he was powerful. His feud with Kurt Angle in 2003 made Smackdown the no.1 show while Raw was going through the infamous Triple H reign of terror.

He had zero creative control when he returned to WWE after trying to put them out of business for years. He was lucky that he even got main event screentime as a 50 year old crippled man who couldn't even take a chokeslam. 1 year later he pulled the "doesn't work for me, brother!" line on the Mr. America gimmick and got fired.

I think a lot of people under rate brocks rookie year. He was sooo entertaining and it wasn't just because of the people around him. He seemed to, from the get go, have a good handle on psychology and how to use his character. His selling was soooo good, with his wild facial expressions. His Benoit match that ends in his crazy submission hold, thats an amazing match.

Truly one of the best booked wrestler debuts. This wouldn't have worked in such a short time frame with everybody, because not everyone has the immediate presence and threat of Lesnar, but they did a great job pairing him with the right mouthpiece, having him maul his way through the ranks, earn a title shot and become a legit main eventer within 6 months. I feel like that sense of progression is often missing in modern WWE.

His friendship and beer bashes with Austin were the best TV moments, way better then Angles with Lesnar (which was the stereotypical buddy-competitor friendship) Goldberg 2003-2004 even better then his WCW run yeah I said it

'02-'04 was THE "BROCK LESNAR" era. You knew Vince was going to push him to the moon & deservedly so- he was/is legit. It was surprising to see Hogan agree to go up against him, especially knowing the types of bumps he would take. Brock was a freakish amateur wrestler big man, unlike the big men Hogan faced that made him famous, so you know he must have gotten a good pay day. Austin's stance made sense regarding jobbing to someone, a new comer with no build up to it. At the same time though, Taker had no problem ( that we know of ) putting The Great Kali over. Had Austin did this it would have been one of the most shocking moments in wrestling history, but he knows his stock would have gone WAY down too. Saying no was a smart move

Even though wwe did the right thing in pushing lesnar as a new star i felt that his quick push also led to his departure a couple of years later since i think he felt he accomplished a lot during his 1st stint

If that Lesnar from 2002 entered the UFC he would have gone down in History as the most dominant fighter of all time. Literally no one in the world would have been able to handle a young Brock Lesnar in a fight He was probably the closest thing the world has seen to a real life superman in his prime I have never seen any athlete in any sport like Lesnar in his prime, just an absolute freak

Always remember watching the chair shots from the Hardys and it didn't even look like it fazed him. Magnificent booking at the time and he truly is one intimidating bastard. Don't like bullys and Brock is no exception but credit where credit is due he was an absolute force of nature on his 1st run Great upload as always WB

It’s ironic that the crowd would massively turn on Brock for a similar reason only two years later. Mind you at least Rock and Lesnar put on an actual GOOD match at Summerslam compared to the WM20 match with Goldberg.

I remember his debut like it was yesterday. Me and my cousin eating sandwiches watching raw when brock destroyed everyone. Never seen someone that big and athletic in wrestling. The feud with the hardy's sealed the deal we watched that match at the ppv and me my brother and cousin all said almost in sequence yeah that guy will be champion within a year lol.

You forget just HOW fast and agile Brock was for being 270+ lbs. Even if you think you remember, when you watch his debut and early years again you're reminded just how superhuman he was. Also a testament to how hard US collegiate and folkstyle wrestling is, that he would only win 1 NCAA championship and he barely won his senior year. Not that "only one" is a slight, but a testament to how hard real wrestling is. Also It's crazy to meet people who straight up forget, or aren't old enough to have been around when Cena was a heel back then when he feuded with Brock. I remember him naming his finisher the "F-U" as a taunt to Brock's finisher (the F5), before it would later become the AA.

Definitely get to more of the Lesnar one. at least one more for sure to do the second half of his career. the retrospect of careers is a good series. You've already done Hogan and Taker very well. SCSA for sure, even the rock (a short series since he wasnt around too long and you can sum up his 1996-early 1998 in a few minutes), but also Flair, HHH, Shawn, The rest of the Kliq, the BSK (as a group or singles in addition to taker), Warrior (they dont all have to be happy tales), keep on with the Kurt Angle one, you get the idea. Great Series! Lots of others to consider.
