It was stolen from him by the West music companies, wasn't it? The original was lovely. And they didn't get royalties, did they? Such a sorrow, such an injustice. If I'm mistaken, I apologise. I salute Soloman Linda and all Zulus everywhere. Thank you.

It's too bad this fascinating story was assigned to AI to read. The story itself is fascinating. So sad for the injustice in the music business that fell on Solomon Linda and his group.

If you listen closely to Seeger's rendition around 8 min, it sounds a lot like a very slight variation of Uyimbube. So I don't think he was responsible for the divergent transcription Wimoweh -- probably done by some record producer who "heard" the lyrics in a way that made more sense to him, inaccurate as that was.

They did. The family received the money. The trust was only "formed to administer the heirs’ copyright." In other words, the trust is in charge of collecting money that will be due in the future, and for charging and collecting license fees on behalf of the family. (This video narration was not very clear on this matter.) They have become quite wealthy! 🙂

This was a very informative video. It's a complex story & did I hear that the final outcome was that the royalties were put into a trust administered by one of the music companies? If so, that really sucks.

It wasn't placed in the hands of the music company. The CEO of a music rights company was put in charge of the trust, which was not put in charge of the money owed to Solomon's descendants, but of collecting their future earnings. Music rights companies work for the composers. They make sure composers and songwriters are paid their royalties. This trust was "formed to administer the heirs’ copyright." That means if I want to record and release my own version of Mbube, I can pay the license fee, no matter where in the world I am, to the trust (or SA Music Rights), and the trust is in charge of determining that fee and ensuring that the copyright laws of that country, those of South Africa, and International copyright laws are not violated. (They are probably also responsible for due diligence in monitoring new releases to make sure they don't violate the song's copyright.) Composers all over the world use these performance rights organizations. In the US the two largest are ASCAP and BMI. Radio stations, streaming services, TV stations, even bars and restaurants must pay their fees to these organizations if they want to play music for their patrons. Even if a bar hires a band that plays music owned by others (like a top-40 cover band), the club owner must pay their music license fee. Then the organizations figure out which composers get which portion of the fees paid by actually visiting these establishments and monitoring broadcasts and making statistical estimates. It's the only way it can work. Otherwise each bar and restaurant, each radio station, each recording artist, etc, would have to strike individual agreements with each individual composer in order to play their work for the public. That's what these organizations do. It works pretty well.

Maybe but its still an exact copy of the melodies and that's what a song is. You can record a different version and pay royalties to the creator and not just steal it and still make money from your recording. The same thing happened to many african american blues artists too: bands taking words and music and not paying royalties. What I don't understand is how greedy this is, because bands/musicians/producers still make money from recording music wrote by someone else, just not as much, but its complicated. Who knows, maybe the record producers/companies lied and told the musicians/bands they were paying the rights to the songs....it's dirty business when you get into it.

Someone found a beautiful musical gem within what you heard as a dying pig. Someone heard what could be made of the song and recognized its worldwide potential. And many others have vastly different ideas of what good music sounds like. Mbube, in its original release, was the biggest selling record in Africa that was made by African musicians. It follows a very recognizable structure called marabi, which would have been familiar and loved all over southern Africa.
