It was stolen from him by the West music companies, wasn't it? The original was lovely. And they didn't get royalties, did they? Such a sorrow, such an injustice. If I'm mistaken, I apologise. I salute Soloman Linda and all Zulus everywhere. Thank you.

This has been the treatment Africans and other minorities have received from Caucasians from way back into colonial days. Looting the continent's resources and giving the indigenes nothing. Claiming ownership of things that don't belong to them.

Just another scam to Rip off our Black Brothers & Sisters by the White man, this has nothing to do with the nice folks singing the song, they may not understand or even know it’s Roots/ History, this song comes from Africa, in particular, Solomon Linda, it’s his, he wrote it and recorded it, but the powers at be took advantage of his lack of education took it shared it with other Greedy White men, all the way to Disney, YES, Disney, you would have thought that once Disney heard the Truth about the Origins, they would have stepped up a payed Reparations to Mr. Linda’s family in a BIG way, out of Respect and out of just doing the Right thing, NO, finally the family was awarded a Pittance, not once have the family seen a invoice, to whom ALL THE money that they should have received as Decedents went, Disney should be ASHAMED for allowing this to happen and NOT doing the right thing. This one White man that was born and raised in South Africa just couldn’t stand by and continue to watch the total injustice that the White has Perpetrated against the Black man in their own country any longer and fought for the Linda family, he believed in the white folks that said they would help him, help them…WELL!!! The Generationally WealthyWhite Africans are Still that way thanks to The Backs of GOOD Black Men & Women, they Helped themselves to what Belonged to Mr. Linda’s Livelihood and still are today taking what’s Not theirs. Those Generationally Rich White African folks have stayed that way and have NO problem with how they got there, they keep the Black Man Generationally POOR, if they had a problem with that, then why don’t they do something to Change that outcome, White folks ask themselves, WHY should I, that’s their mentality. Why they are even allowed to live in Africa is Beyond Understanding or Common-sense! It’s the Black Mans History, everything a Black Man Builds, Invents, Sings, Whatever, a Greedy White Man comes along figures out a way to use it or to just TAKE it, put his name on it and dares the Black Man to Stand up for His Truth! How could a White woman married to a White Man like That, live with it, live with the Shame of it knowing they are living off a Black Man’s Back, there’s nothing good that Your husband did for your race BUT Steal from others…Let’s not get into slavery as that’s a place White folks can NEVER come back from, the Pure Evil Disgusting Sick Mentality a half human believes he has a Legal and Moral Right to Own another Human-being its beyond Comprehension or Compassion of Heart BUT I see, the White Man is Lacking in that area!!! If You need to understand the story of Mr. Linda, research, do the Homework and you’ll understand, it’s just one more show of Injustice against Black America/Africa and everywhere else you find Folks of Colour and the Other Horrid Atrocities they suffered by human beings hands. My tone might not be as a professional writer, but, I think You understand where I’m coming from and if You are White and feel I DisRespected You, then maybe this is a place of understanding and reflection, conversations with family about generations back/now and moving forward! Thank you 🙏🏽 for reading this.

This is so beautiful. I remember when the Tokens made this a hit. It was such a fantastic, unusual sound. It's easy to see this as a case of intellectual theft (apparently Solomon Linda was never properly compensated). Be that as it may, it was part of the whole process of African music coming to America, and that was a good thing. The music of Africa merged and evolved into the Blues, Jazz, and rock-n-roll. Rock -n-roll could have only had its start in America.

Maybe but its still an exact copy of the melodies and that's what a song is. You can record a different version and pay royalties to the creator and not just steal it and still make money from your recording. The same thing happened to many african american blues artists too: bands taking words and music and not paying royalties. What I don't understand is how greedy this is, because bands/musicians/producers still make money from recording music wrote by someone else, just not as much, but its complicated. Who knows, maybe the record producers/companies lied and told the musicians/bands they were paying the rights to the songs....it's dirty business when you get into it.

Someone found a beautiful musical gem within what you heard as a dying pig. Someone heard what could be made of the song and recognized its worldwide potential. And many others have vastly different ideas of what good music sounds like. Mbube, in its original release, was the biggest selling record in Africa that was made by African musicians. It follows a very recognizable structure called marabi, which would have been familiar and loved all over southern Africa.

They did. The family received the money. The trust was only "formed to administer the heirs’ copyright." In other words, the trust is in charge of collecting money that will be due in the future, and for charging and collecting license fees on behalf of the family. (This video narration was not very clear on this matter.) They have become quite wealthy! 🙂
