    I get his addiction story. I'm a recovering alcoholic, and when I say that I mean I am an alcoholic who nearly drank herself to death--my liver was shutting down, so I didn't get to make a concious choice. The universe kicked my ass and said "KNOCK IT OFF OR DIE". So I'm 2.5 years sober and I understand feeling like you need to be sedated. Life is INTENSE, and my brain never quits, even when I'm sleeping. Thankfully, at least some of it is creative thinking. Unfortunately, the rest is anxiety or depression.

    At the age I am today (51) my favourite band is "The 1975" by far. In the 80's and the 90's it was "The Smith's/Morrissey" then from the 2000's onwards it was a few indie bands but not until "The View", Jamie T and Jake Bugg was there any artist's of such importance to me and my music. So thank God for Matty and co because his talent is a rare gift indeed.

    This band literally changed & saved my life. It’s such an incredible experience as a fan to watch them grow since their first self-titled album to now. Matty & the guys are such talented artists & the way they present themselves in the public eyes is so genuine & down to earth. They are truly a special group 💗

  • @matthewsharayko7463

    Let me preface this by saying I am a big fan of the 1975 and they are an incredibly talented band (also, great research and editing on this video). However, it's misleading when we look at these artists stories and how they "bootstrapped" themselves to fame and success by "working hard". A big part of the 1975's success was 1) Matt's parents' connections as career actors-they could network opportunities for the band that most people could never get (how else do you think they got opening spots with bands like Muse and The Rolling Stones?), and 2) family wealth that meant Matt probably didn't have to struggle to pay rent or afford music gear and could spend more time honing his craft rather than working a 9-5 job to make ends meet. The 1975 is an awesome band but there are also TONS of talented artists who never see the light of day because they lack resources and/or opportunities.

    If you have seen ANY OTHER INTERVIEW by Matty you would know how hard it was for him to get signed by a record company or big label so they had to make their own record label. He even says they all made the record label together and chipped in. He never got any help despite who is parents are. Part of why a lot of people like him is because he's not used his family connections to get famous. Plus before they released the album and the first single they were struggling with Denise's spout in Big brother the year prior so im certain he wouldn't have wanted to be affiliated (IYKYK) LMAO..

  • @matthewsharayko7463

    @matthewsharayko7463

    @@B123Sarah I knew there was bound to be someone with this take lol. look, all I'm saying is that the industry is really hard to break into but that it undeniably helps to have parents who both WORK IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY and therefore know how it works and have professional connections. Regardless of how hard it was for Matty and the band to get a record deal, it goes to show that for most people, unless you are born wealthy, connected, and/or are lucky, the chances of breaking are incredibly slim. Having said that, Matty was on television as a child for goodness sake with his parents talking about his music, Denise has stated publicly on loose women that she tried to put the band in front of A&R for labels hoping to get them signed about 10 years ago.

    I am so very excited for Drive Like I do. And also I loved the documentary. Matty's self aware pretentiousness is something I strive for. Being aware of the things around you but then you do have to allow yourself some pretension to maybe write a song, write a novel and indulge in progressive causes. So being aware of those pretensions is in a way comforting for me. Yeah....great video man.

    Stumbled across this video and really appreciate that it is so thorough and yet still concise. The 1975 is a fantastic band and I am incredibly happy for the growing attention they have received. Been one of my all-time favorite bands for years, and I get to see them live for the first time very soon, which I'm thrilled about. They've had a huge impact on my life. Anyway, after watching I 1) subscribed 2) started playing the 1975's discography chronologically because it reminded me how much I love listening through in order and 3) was sad to find there is not a giant archive of Bean Therapy videos available. But I will hope for and be on the lookout for more future content.

    This is super well done! You did a great job expounding on what makes this band, and Matty in particular, so enticing and interesting to follow. It's funny tho....for the longest time I dismissed The 1975. I'm a few years older than Matty, and always rolled my eyes thinking it was some purely emo whatever band. But I was wrong...they're a super interesting cool post-modern creative juggernaut. I gotta thank my brother for getting me into them. He was, and is, an uber fan....and I finally came around and realized what he saw in them. So yeah....very nicely done doc. :)

    Yep I thought about killing myself but the issue was my distaste for pain. I took 30 nembutal in a hotel after fighting with a friend and my mom back to back. I went to a hotel figuring the cleaning lady would find me. Surprise my friend I had fought with realized I had really been trying to be Marilyn Monroe for a part of her movie The Misfits. She played Roslyn who shared a lot of her and my issues at the time and being method actors sorta concerned my friend who went to acting class with me. Back in that time pills which were a mixture of sleeping pills and codeine 4s were likely the very best feeling from any drug infact any feeling aside from at that time honest applause from my acting teachers and classmates until I had my boys. It's a great feeling when they are these two perfect parts of you smile, walk, and are just pure joy. Unfortunately post partdom depression is real and they medicated me fast with my first boy and I had my moments when I needed help and was lucky in that I had it. My second son was amazing. A bit hyper but a boy. My second was unbelievable. I couldn't believe I had two boys perfect in my eyes in every way. Things were so great I didn't bother going on post partum meds. Then about 2 months in I realized my first son was having issues getting along with the other pre k kids he was in school with. His brother was in my eyes perfection. He knew how to make me smile so easily. My mom and support sustems helped me deal with my first son's school and likely jealousy issues because his brother was a momma's boy and just made me shine. One day I was feeling anxious and took a Valium. My mom freaked. I had implants so did not breast feed. I couldn't understand. With my first boy I was put on paxil and or prozac immediately. I had no issues and assumed I didn't need pills prescribed daily for sure. After week 3 a d 4 I began to get into a darker and darker place I didn't want to discuss with my mom. Their dad preferred I not be medicated as well. I started noticing all the things I did wrong with my first son and feared I do the same to my second. Then it became a constant thought how I wreck everyone's life. I knew places to still get pharmaceuticals and one day woke up. That day I had neither boy after 6am. I knew if I stayed in their lives I'd ruin them. I knew where to get tuinol capsules and got 36. I went to the movie theatres that played older films, purchased a drink. I got a ticket for the Titanic. I purchased a beer went in as it began and was dark. There were maybe 2 or 3 other people in the theatre. I sat in a dark seat and without a second thought took all 36. I didn't finish the beer. I woke 3 days later in the hospital. I could barely breath because something was down my throat. I pulled it out still drowsy. The attempted to put it back but I could breath and luckily I might forget a word occasionally but I'm no different than prior.

    loving or hating Greta is so questionable, why, other than internalized misoginy, would you hate an activist? someone who has done so many efforts to keep us alive in face of Climate Crisis?.... just a thought that popped up, love the work made on this video, love Matty.

    Uh, is this guy sure the "The" didn't pertain to the 1st of June part? I am pretty sure if they put the "st" after the date (1st instead of just 1), then the THE was part of that. The year was just 1975. The band name always sounded dumb to me and now I understand why, at least.

    @@beantherapy Oh, thank you! I appreciate the link. Stuff like this is really interesting to me and I don’t always see links in the comments. And admittedly, I don’t have a short attention span but in this case am not really interested in the band, so I didn’t finish the entire video. I do truly find it fascinating that the lead singer is so prolific with his use of references to other things from art, books, music, etc.
