It’s hard to question JF but it’s possible he’s misinformed here. I’d HAVE to to go with the dude who cares for and probably works on it constantly. I mean he can probably tell you everything down to the pots. I liken John to an Formula 1 driver. He can drive his car better than anyone but the mechanics are the ones who know exactly what’s in the engine. He wouldn’t be able to tell you what the timing specs are or exactly how much HP his turbo generates at certain RPMs.

It's pretty sure Lee's right. He said, in details, that they tried a lot of pickups over time, and they finally decided to use the american standard ones. John's kinda right : they probably used SSL1 to try them, but probably not after. Stupid thing is : I own a strat from the early 2000's (so with the same "am pro standard pickup" David Lee says there's in the strat. But I sold them, 10 years ago, to buy SSL1 😂. But I'm happy with them whatever.

You really do make great videos. There was an interview where John said he basically used one guitar for the whole album, and he mentioned it was a Strat. If it’s this guitar, we could assume that the entire record is written in that tuning. Maybe? If that were true, then he would potential he be playing this guitar on those songs when they play live. Long story short, it makes me think that they might apply the lower tuning to the entire set possibly to accommodate Anthony’s vocals. I can’t imagine “under the bridge“ tuned down but just about every other song they have would be perfect to tune down.

I belief the guitar tech, no brainer! I've seen a video of the tech where he explains how he used to string John's guitars and he's very clear minded. John Frusciante doesn't strike me as the kind of person to be on top of details like which guitar pick ups are in which guitar. He's more focussed on creative things and was a heavy user for many years, which clouds your mind even further.

I had a Strat with SSL-1s and they didn’t sound anything like what I’d heard from that 62. My best friend had a 2006 American strat with those standard off the shelf delta tone pickups, and they had a completely different Strat sound to them that, to my ear, sounded exactly like John’s guitar. I bought it from him years later for that exact reason, not knowing those were the pickups Dave Lee installed. When that interview came out, I felt pretty vindicated because I just knew the SSL1 pickups weren’t right, but I got lucky on the standard American Strat pickups being the actual pickups John had. These pickups are really difficult to find these days for some reason-I’m always hunting for those mid-2000s Strat pickups. They sound awesome. The American Tele pickups from this time also sound killer for some reason-we used to have a 2006 American Tele in our rehearsal space and it was just such a nice sounding guitar.

I did a swap with the SSLs in my Road Worn 60s Strat and I went back the the Tex-Mex because they sounded terrible to my ear. The neck pickup had no gusto and the bridge was super brittle.

What are they called, do you know? I got an 04 US strat that has 65 pure vintages in it and it sounds pretty similar to JF but for some reason ive always been under the impression he used 57/62 pure vintages. I also have an 88 MIJ strat that has gotoh pups that sound surprisingly similar to JF

@@joeferris5086 they were sold as “fender delta tone” pickups separately. Fender has used the “delta tone” name for a tone circuit modification as well, and that’s what you’re pretty much always going to always find when searching that term. It’s one part of what makes these pickups difficult to source separately from a complete guitar.

I did the same and bought a used 2001 strat with the delta tone pot and original run of the mill pickups and agree that they sound similar to John’s strat from this era. Wasn’t a fan of the SSL-1s personally. I tried Lollars as well and they’re great but when I went back to the original pickups it just felt right in that guitar.

Another thing I learned about his 62; Dave Lee planed down John strats to a 9,5" radius instead of the vintage radius 7,25" radius for easier bending.

I had my last and only strat and my preforming bass for cover bands stolen. Man that's my 2nd strat. My dream guitar taken. I play classic rock and metal. But 90s, 2000s really what I love. My family who are cruel sold my stuff supposedly I hear, and told me it was stolen. I was in prison for 2 years after a drug addiction that started after a MRSA infection from a surgery that almost killed me put me in the hospital for a month under massive medications, almost dead. It all effected my brain and health. I'm anemic and unwell alot. So I've been out for 2 years, doing clean and good. But stuck in a poor area, I having been able to get a replacement. I'd be so happy to get even just a used Mexican made, mine was just that. A deluxe. And before that the 1st that was stolen was just like a standard, but white w tortoise shell pickguard. I loved both, lost both. Man it kills me I used to be a roofer. And I play good enough for a cover band. People at the shops I used to frequent said I worked hard at alot of covers.

Cool Video :). I met Seymour before and i am sure he spits out tons of pickups from his location in Santa Barbara Ca. . Sure they are both right . I bought my SSL-1 Pickups over 20 years ago . I believe they were marked 54 vintage pickups and also marked SSL-1 . I bought them because of Andy Aledort . He wrote some great Tablature books on Hendrix and he recommended SSL--1 for Hendrix Tone. We all know John is a Hendrix fan ! I could bet that some of AVRI Fender American strats ETC. , are getting SSL-1 also. So John and Dave are both correct :) Have we all forgot the Seymour and Eddie Van Halen Pickup story ?

I’ve never seen an article where John specifically stated that he had SSL-1’s in any of his guitars. In the 2010 Vintage Guitar Magazine article he said it was eventually found that his ‘55 Strat had “Seymour Duncan Vintage Strat pickups”. People jumped to the conclusion that this meant SSL-1’s, and this went on to somehow become accepted as fact. Seymour Duncan offers several models of vintage Strat pickups, such as SSL-1’s, Antiquities, etc., so which model Duncans were in the ‘55 when he bought it is still up for debate. Even John’s claim that his ‘62 Strat eventually got Duncans as well was corrected by his former tech Dave Lee.

I've often wondered about the pickups in his #1 also. We see now that John has been using his '61 Fiesta Red Strat for "Black Summer", so that one must stay tuned down

I saw a very recent close-up picture of this guitar (from during the unlimited love tour) and it looks like the pick guard has been replaced at some point in time. Older photos of the guitar appear to show a white/off-white guard that clearly has discoloration and signs of use. The guard in the picture I'm referencing is clearly mint green and looks to be perfectly clean and brand new. I know its just a pick guard but little details like that are interesting. There's a lot to be said about keeping a vintage guitar in its original state with all its original parts, but a guitar that's been played as much as this one undoubtedly would need regular maintenance to stay in working condition. Makes you wonder how many times this guitar has been re-fretted.

I read yet another bit that says this guitar is completely stock, including pickups (minus the tuners) - but that the 55 Strat has the SSLs in it.

Could you feature Slash’s appetite Les Paul? Would be sick. There’s a very interesting story behind it. Same goes for his amp, the legendary JCM800 SIR 34 mod.

Dude I love your channel! I believe the tech, that said.. don't really care to much which pickups the guitar has. The beauty of a single coil is its simplicity, its a very pure tone. I have the ssl1-s and I LOVE them but this is not the deciding factor on John's tone.

I could never find any quotes from John saying they were specifically the SSL-1s. I'm guessing this is something people deducted from him saying they are "Seymour Duncan vintage pickups" in that 2009 interview. Also, i think it's worth mentioning that his '62 Strat now has the "Ilitch" hum-canceling system, which can be seen in the May 2022 issue of Total Guitar. Funnily, that interview claims that the Strat has the original hand-wound pickups - so it makes it even more confusing lol.

i am curious about the uper pickguard screw between the middle and the neck pickup. in the picture of 1998 the screw is right in the middle of the two pickups but on newer pictures the screw is more on the right side (on top of the middle pu). 1961 strats have the screw also in the middle i think. have the new vintage II 61 strat and this screw is also period correct in the middle 😉 what is happening with the screw position overt the years on john's strat? ...for shure that's a only a detail 😉

I'm a Jaguar nut and happen to own 5 vintage Jaguars ('62, '63, 3x'65). My '63 Jaguar was one where in I was able to track down and reunite an original body and neck of a (particularly rare) black with matching headstock Jag that were separated sometime in the early 1990's. The gentleman in California who sold me the body and helped me track down the neck worked at the guitar repair shop in Hollywood (I can't currently remember it's name) that was basically one door down from Guitar Center Hollywood. He actually had opportunity to buy a couple of John's guitars in the mid-90's when he was struggling with drugs. Anyhow, his friend worked at the Hollywood GC and called him one day in 1998 and told him "You need to come next door. Anthony Keidis is here with John Frusciante to buy a guitar. John's back in the band and they're recording a new record." Sure enough, they were there. John was in a small room where they kept some high end new guitars and GC staff were pulling vintage Fenders off the wall and bringing them in for John to try while Anthony chatted with some of the staff and the gentleman whom I bought my Jag body from. He says Anthony was openly talking about John returning to the band and that they were recording the album that would become Californication. I'm told that along with the 1962 Strat, a Silver Jubilee, a JCM 800 and two 4x12 cabs were also purchased for John that day. A couple notes on the guitar; I'd been more inclined to take the tech's word on the pickups. Not that it makes much difference anyway. I'm of the opinion that pickups are one of the most overrated aspects of guitar tone and a single coil Strat pickup, so long as it's made with similar magnets (i.e. alnico 5) and a similar number of windings for a similar output are going to sound very similar. Regardless if they're new, vintage, machine wound, "scatter wound," whatever. The only thing that's going to make a consistent, discernable difference to a pickup's tone is how many winds are on the pickup and to a slightly lesser extent, the magnet type used (alnico 3 instead of alnico 5 for instance). Meaning for instance, an alnico 5 Strat pickup with 3,500 winds at 6.25k ohms is going to sound pretty much the same whether it was wound by a machine inside a Corona, Ca factory in 2022 or "scatter wound" by the sacrificial blood soaked hands of an elderly Mexican Bruha in 1958 who was trained personally by Leo Fender in an arcane, dark magick pickup winding ritual under a harvest moon. In regard to the tuners, Kluson tuners are what were standard in 1962. So even if they were to replace the originals, they're still correct vintage spec. It's not like throwing on a set of Gotoh or Schaller. Lastly, I'd be quite interested in knowing when Dave Lee made the comment about the pickups being a set of standard American Strat pickups. I've heard on good authority that all of John's Strats, going back to pre-Stadium Arcadium days, either always had or have been returned to original vintage pickups. Whether that's to imply the originals in this particular 1962 were rewound, idk. I'd assume they were replaced for a reason in the first place. As much as I don't subscribe to the vintage vs standard vs boutique pickups debate, I would not buy a vintage Fender without its original, fully functional pickups unless the guitar was at a steep discount. Even then, I'd have the original pickups rewound before throwing in a set of SSL's or new stock Fenders. Lastly, I've also been told (again, on good authority whether or not anyone is inclined to believe it) that only the bridge pickup was replaced with (this person says) an SSL-1.

the pickguard was changed at some point. compare the screw holes. its either a new one or one from 63-65.

You're guess was right! He plays Black Summer with his red strat.

so in an interview in total Guitar mag that came out this month he states that this guitar has the original hand wound pick ups but he has had installed a ILITCHEN hum canceling system so his guitar tech was right all along.

I have a 2004 Strat with 50's pickups. I bought a 2016 American Special - came with Texas Specials > I then swapped out the pickups for SSL1's I recently just bought a 1962 Strat (all original). I am interested to compare the tones. The SSL1's seem like they are the right pickup to my ear. The 50's are close, but not not quite (and the Texas specials are not even close). I am interested to see what the pickups in the 62 sounds like. If they don't sound like the JF tone, I may be changing out the pickups...

is this a slab or veneer board 62? would be good to know, and to find close up pics if there are any

He for sure changed the pickups and probably the pickguard too! Compare the photos from 98 to 2007 and 2022. The 98 pickguard has a tiny hole to fit a tool and adjust the neck truss rod.

I believe that the White Falcon John used from 1998 to 2009 was not his and belonged to Vincent Gallo.(I could be mistaken) John does use a different White Falcon now, so I'm sure that he just went out and bought one that's suitable for touring.

Wasn’t he referring to the 50s Maple Neck Strat when talking about the SSL1s? Although I have heard and read that he changed the pups in the 62 strat in 2004 to SSL1s as well.

He said something along the lines of him liking the SSL1's so much in that guitar that because of it they then put them into the 62 as well.

I talked with Dave Lee in 2000 next to John's guitars, he said they were stock at that time. It might've changed but hope that helps.

It's funny I remember reading Guitar One magazine when Californication came out John was really into his maple 55 at that time too. It's interesting how he grew to prefer the 62 as his number 1.

Maybe they want to keep a mystery on purpose 😊. You were right about black summer live, he used the fiesta red..

John is pretty head strong and emotional, tends to believe his own train of thought rather than others, well at least back then when he seem to be battling himself half the time about what it meant to be famous. Dave Lee himself said John was difficult and emotional at times but they must have had a good working relationship to be together for 10 years, gotto be a stressful job going on tour responsible for all of those pedals, backup amps, guitar tuning etc, I would hope they had a good friendship and that John appreciated his tech! Anyway, I reckon Dave just told him what he wanted to hear and later told the truth otherwise. I have SSL-1's in my Strat and I have a CE-1 paired with a Silver Jubilee, the tone is pretty close and that's all that matters really if you like a tone. John's live rig is a stereo rig going through two different amps a ton of pedals buffered and with pre-amps, there is also a rack compressor in the mix too. Honestly, the difference between two sets of simular strat pickups is going to get lost in all of that. I mean is it that different when John plays his other strats, especially the one we know have SSL-1's in it...I dont think it is, I dont listen to Zephyr song at Slane and think wow this is totally different to Scar Tissue and so on. So if the pickups were replaced in 1999 or whenever it was, the were stock pickups of the time, we dont know if they were vintage voiced or whatever, if you bought a 1999 USA strat would you end up with the right tone, who knows. SSL-1's through my rig sound very close, but the same pickups for other people do not, there's far too many variables at play but at least I know they are in his maple necked strat :) If I was giving someone advice on how to reach his 'clean' tone I would say get a CE-1 clone and a simular Marshall running really hot...as far as pickups goes, good quality USA standard pickups or SSL-1 is perfectly fine....Im not saying anyone cares what I think, but if I was asked I mean.

Is that the one he gave to Dave Navarro to "pay him back" for the Les Paul Dave gave John in 98? Also He's playing a beautiful Gibson SG on Fortune Faded video, what is that one?

there's a way to tell what pickups i bet. ssl-1 prbably have vintage stagger, whereas standard strats of the time would have 'alnico flats' with no stagger which you cant buy new anymore. either way, both incredibly similar pickups with most likely being the fender ones

Did this strat have its pickguard changed? I always thought 62 pickguards have a screw placed between the bridge and middle pickups, and then in 63 the screw was placed just north of the middle pickup.

Ha! I just commented about this as well. Old pictures show a beat up white guard while recent pictures show a seemingly brand new mint green one. You are right about the screw placement though. That changed somewhere between 1962 and 1964. All the other holes line up though so they probably just drilled one extra hole to make this guard work. More evidence that the guard has been changed!

Hi Justic, i think he actually tunes his 62 strat a half step down, if you watch his new lives gigs or yeaterdy's howard stern show, he is playing his 62 strat for these are the ways which is tune in D not in E...so what do you think about this? Or does he habe two 62 strats?

Someone in another comment said it broke at one time, so John’s tech replaced it with a vintage ‘63 pick guard. It’s odd that they couldn’t hunt one down or at least get a reproduction instead of drilling another hole into the guitar, but it seems John didn’t care if that was done.

Do you think a classic vibe 60s or 50s strat would be a better fit for frusc style tone? I’m getting mixed opinions from KZread comments

I would like to see if you could get a good idea of what Jimmy Page used for Stairway to Heaven. There are so many rumors surrounding that song from using the Tele he used to write it, to the mysterious amp he used on the recording. Also as far as John's pickups I think I would have to go with John on this for one reason; he plays the damn thing. I feel that the player would be able to hear the difference between the two pickups and the amount of time he must spend with it just reinforces that idea.

He said in a recent interview that the pickups in the 62 strat were the original ones 🤔

If it were just an interview with John vs another interview with his tech where the tech said “the pickups are _____” it’d be one thing because even tho the tech generally knows more, they also sometimes misspeak because they have so much shit going on in their head. But if you’re saying that the tech said in an interview that John was mistaken and that the pickups John said were in the guitar actually weren’t - then I for sure believe the technician.

I definitely believe John. It has to be the SSL1's. The stock pickups would have more of the annoying hum and would be brighter and have less sonic range. DLee was pretty stubborn from what I've read. Probably wouldn't admit if he was wrong

fun fact: it's just a guitar. As long at it works he is going to sound great. He could play on some squier as well and there would be no notbale difference. Same goes for any decent guitarist. If needed, change the pickups and that's it

The jag was bought later. When recording the Californication record he used the studios Jaguar, he wanted to buy it from the guy but he wouldn’t sell it. He went with Frusciante to a guitar shop and bought the Fiesta Jag. There’s a video with the studio guitar tech telling the story on KZread. You seem to be confusing it with the BSSM jag or his old lake placid blue one from his time after the peppers. With the pickup story with this Strat. Dave said previously that the guitar was supposed to have the original,pickups in it but when he opened it to work on it it was Seymour Duncan inside. This was when he was still the guitar tech for JF so he’s probably misremembering the story later. As he’s contradicting himself now.

I've read a lot about Niandra and smile and recently I'd listen to some interviews and Toni Oswald, said that John's guitars were stolen, and that the fire didn't do Anything to his gear. Another thing in unlimited love John's gonna play everything with the strat, at least that's what he said in 2020, the jaguar came after the 62 strat, there's a interview about Californication where the sound engineer said that. And pretty much that I remember that the 55's had the ssl1 but there's an interval of 3 years of quiting the band and creating the empyrean, where sounds like a sll1. And he could be wrong about the 62 and he was referring to the 55, we don't know that or the two guitars had ssl1, who knows
