I saw Gary Lewis in Ridgeley WV in 1978 at a small bar called My Place. The girl I was dating at the time was in heaven. He was very nice and worked through the crowd greeting everyone who came, but that wasn't difficult because there was less than 100 people there.

We had Gary Lewis and The Playboys at our club in upstate New York. When they pulled into the club on the afternoon, they were to go on at 9 o'clock that evening. They setup and started rehearsing, got done in a couple of hours and they decided to go to their rooms. They said they were going to change clothes and be back. When they came back, they had the same clothes on as when they left. They were so out of it I did not know how they could perform that night. They got through the show and the people had a good time. The next night they were in New York City all dressed in tuxedoes as I watched them from the bar at our club.

People are so stupid criticizing this band and The Monkees! And you know what? They were charming and nobody cares they were not massive composers. So what? They are still touring and they play their instruments and sing their beautiful songs. Gary was and is absolutely charming and The Monkees are one of the top bands of the 60s. What is wrong about the so called bubble gum music? Why do you have to call "bubble gum" to happy music? The Beatles, Elvis, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys... and many others had lots of bubble gum songs and "silly love songs". Since when is that something bad? Since when happy music has to be profound? Give me a break!!!!!

So Leon Russell was the driving force behind it all. I understand guitarist Jesse Ed Davis helped out this bubble gum band get started too. Jesse Ed should be in the R$R Hall of Fame. He is not. These Playboy guys were just mediocre, like the way overhyped Monkees. Same era.

Silly example of how a mediocre relative of a famous person could pull strings in order to be a success...shows how shallow the American consumer can be!

The records are great but live, it sounds terrible. Jerry Lewis made it a point to disinherit all of his sons.
