Harvey Brownstone Interviews Gary Lewis, Rock and Roll Legend - “Gary Lewis and the Playboys”

Ойын-сауық

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Gary Lewis, Rock and Roll Legend, Founder and Lead Singer of “Gary Lewis and the Playboys”
About Harvey's guest:
Today’s special guest is the lead singer of one of the most popular and successful rock and roll bands in pop music history, “Gary Lewis and the Playboys”.
He’s the son of Jerry Lewis and singer Patti Palmer. His mother, who was performing at the time with the Ted Fio Rito Orchestra, intended to name him after her favorite actor, Cary Grant, but her son became "Gary" as the result of a clerical error.
He received a set of drums as a gift for his 15th birthday in 1960 and when he was 18, formed the band "Gary and the Playboys" with four friends. Joking at the lateness of bandmates to practice, Lewis referred to them as "playboys", and the name stuck.
Their many hit songs, including “This Diamond Ring”, “Count me In”, “Save Your Heart for Me”, “Everybody Loves a Clown”, “She’s Just my Style”, “Sure Gonna Miss Her” and “Green Grass”, are part of the soundtrack of our lives. With 8 Gold Singles, 17 Top 40 Hits, 4 Gold Albums, and 45 Million records sold worldwide, our guest is the first and only artist during the 1960s to have his first 7 releases reach Billboard magazine's Top 10 on the Hot 100 chart.
In 1965, he was named Cash Box magazine's "Male Vocalist of the Year", winning out over Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. He and his band made numerous appearances on popular TV shows including American Bandstand, Hullabaloo, Shindig, and The Tonight Show. AND he’s one of only a handful of artists who appeared FIVE TIMES WITHIN 2 YEARS on the Ed Sullivan Show.
With the re-emerging interest in oldies music, “Gary Lewis & The Playboys” continue to tour and entertain their millions of fans around the world.

Gary looks like an older version of his mother. Glad he’s happy, well adjusted and doing his thing. I respect the fact he does not wanna do a tell-all type of memoir knocking his dad. That alone shows what a class act he is.

Jerry Lewis was not a well-adjusted man because when he would come home his wife would tell the children to be careful your dad is on his way home. So, they would disappear from not being around to bother his father. His father, Jerry Lewis, would act one way with the audience and at home he become angry and not very kind around the children.

@@homegown1234 very true. Disappointed in him as a man cuz for someone that brought joy onscreen was such a jerk in real life. How he treated his wife and kids in private was really no one’s business, but still. I’m proud of Gary for finding his own way and not letting his past with his dad stop his own personal and professional progress in his life.

I really enjoyed interviewing the wonderful Gary Lewis, as he’s lived an amazing life and gave us so many great songs. If you read (or listen) between the lines, I think you’ll detect that he was actually saying a lot about his Dad, the legendary Jerry Lewis. I was hoping to convince Gary to consider writing a memoir, but it’s clear that, in order to give a true and complete account of his life, the pain would be too much. Obviously some of his memories are just too traumatic. Of all the interviews Gary has given, I think this is one of his most candid and intimate. I’m very grateful for that. I hope Gary’s fans will enjoy this very special interview.

This is a phenomenal interview. Thank you so much for this post. I had the pleasure of seeing and talking with Gary and the Playboys after their concert in Cobleskill, New York (upstate). Gary is one of the most personable, down to earth gentlemen I have ever met. He is amazing and so respectful of his fans. Everyone danced and sang and had such a wonderful time at the concert. After the concert he stayed and mingled for a long time. He never rushed anyone through the meet and greet. I think he would have stayed for hours just talking with the fans. He posed for photos, autographed CDs, and was soooooo very nice. I would love to see him in concert again in concert. He is only a few years older. In the 1960's I was a music columnist for a number of newspapers in the Carolinas'. My interviews with artists included The Mamas & Papas, soul artist's Eddie Floyd , Stevie Wonder and members of the Rat pack to mention just a few. In 1990 I relocated to Florida where I was offered a job with a local newspaper. During that time a local radio station hosted an oldies show fearuring a variity of acts including Gary Lewis and the Playboys whom I interviewed backstage. Mr. Lewis was very honest and willing to share his thoughts on the music business. During that interview One of my questions was: " With all the success of the Beatles and other famous stars how do feel about so much competition." His answer: "There's room for everyone". Gary Lewis came across as one of the most honest and upfront artists of any I've ever had the pleasure to meet.

I was under 10 when Gary Lewis and the Playboys were popular, and i couldn't help but notice that every song they produced was consistently good. I really enjoyed them. Listening to this interview, Gary said someone told him that his music wasn't wanted in the '70's, because when they suddenly quit putting out records, i was actually looking forward to hearing another recording. But that record producers chose to quit recording Gary's music, just because THEY thought they wouldn't sell. Because Gary Lewis and the Playboys were doing so well, Liberty Records shouldn't have ever stopped. I really enjoyed their music and believe they could have gone farther.

I have loved and played Gary Lewis's music on the radio for so many years but never really knew too much about him other than his tough relationship with his famous father. This interview was eye opening and my respect for him has grown immensely. I hope that Jerry really did understand what a special person he raised before he passed. His decision not write a "tell-all" book and cash in on the celebrity is so unselfish and a rarity. You can tell it done out of the love and respect that he has for his dad which might not necessarily be warranted! Thanks for the great interview!

I loved Gary Lewis & The Playboys' hits in my teens. I also love the covers. When a hit was found they would record other major act hits like The Kinks and The Beatles in order to get an album out fast. Stereo on the additional tracks was Gary's vocal on one side and everything else on the other. I found by turning the balance I could sing lead making them the first karaoke tracks. Of course, I had no idea I was being backed by Leon Russell, The Wrecking Crew and The Playboys.

Thank you for conducting this interview with Gary....and asking some great questions! I totally understand what Gary is saying about not wanting to relive dark periods of his life (writing a book). Even though it would certainly be of big interest, and may even be of help to those that have gone thru similar situations (addictions, trouble with parents) Gary is the one that has to dig deep to pull up the hurt and pain side of his life to write about it. Not a very pleasant prospect for the next couple of years of his life.....writing the book and then doing the interview circuit about it. From everything I've read about Jerry Lewis and his children, there is a lot of hurt -to- the- bone dysfunction there. I don't blame him for just wanting to remember and focus on what good he had with his Dad.... get on with living in the here and now. Gary is a class act for sure!

I have always been very fond of Gary Lewis and the Playboys, and his music. In the late 1970's I would service the pool at his dad's house in Bel-Air. The guard at the gate would have to open the gate for me, and the pool had the lift-o-matic pool covers. I never once saw Jerry, or his family. Gary is such a class act, and a wonderful human being, and loves America, and faithfully served as a vet. Excellent candid interview! I still greatly enjoy listening to his happy upbeat music, and greatly admire his talent in his own right.

I'm a 60s kid. GL's music was so impactful on pop culture. I was happy to hear when you said you never tire of performing your hits.😊

So humble, simple & happy go lucky. He's impressive, rather uncommon nowadays & maybe very much so considering his background. Good vid & t/y !!

Great interview. Gary's music was very much part of my growing up. I have a 45 from Kellogg's Corn Flakes called "Do the Flake" that I sent away for. It also has "This Diamond Ring" and another song - 3 songs on a 45. Don't think I've ever seen that, ever. I cherish having that record. It has a great paper sleeve, too.
