They annexed Hong Kong with the British prior to WWII and ended up using it as a munitions manufacturing hub during the war. As would be expected, European colonists and "diplomats" would want some beer to drink and they opened a brewery, nearby, shortly after arriving. After WWII, when Germany was forced to demilitarize, China took back the region that the brewery was in and renamed it Tsingtao. To this day, they are brewing a centuries-old recipe for Munich lager, just under a different name and under Chinese governmental control.

I think that being a relatively young country, who went to great lengths to erase the indigenous cultures and strongly claiming independence from where many of us originated from, leaves us lacking a strong historical identity. That leaves many clinging to nationalism as a huge part of their identity. That’s another reason to appreciate, learn and support the many many cultures that live together here
