I always thought D-Day stood for “Disembarkation Day”… You know how allied planners LOVED their particular style of language when it came to literally anything that might be written down or even spoken aloud. I also thought it was fitting in that the definition of disembarkation is: “The act of leaving a vehicle, especially a ship or aircraft and at the end of a journey”. Maybe I’m just reading too much into it, but it’s nice to think about the possible intent behind the choice of words being “The end of the journey, the last boat you’re going to be on until you’re heading home, the final push…”. Disembarkation

In 1983, I was trained in our version of the bouncing Betty, M60 anti tank mines and Claymores. I was then a member of the USMC Engineer school. In doing so, we also trained in removing mines. Our Bettie’s had the “kicker” charge in them as a training aid. We wore face shield as we did so. I witnessed a fellow Marine removing an anti tank mine. As he did, his right foot set off a Betty surrounding the big one. We all heard a “pop”. He spun around only to be hit in the face as the Betty emerged. It lifted him off his feet and he landed on another. The second bruised his kidney. We later had to dig a grave, and partially bury him and mock cry (Marine Corps engineer instructors are a little sick). Later, we all laughed our asses off at the poor idiot!!!

One of key assets of the USA uranium bomb program was the Tennessee Valley Authority, a "Great Depression political boondoggle", which built numerous unneeded, often unequipped, power dams in the 1930s. This system was quickly and completely built out with all its needed generating equipment and transmission lines during WW2 and provided the huge amounts of electric power required to separate the rare fissile uranium bomb isotope from its much less active, much more common uranium, close relative.
