I love this story and have probably read it a dozen times over, and still enjoy it every time. This story demands a movie, and while the logistics of it in the past were near impossible, due to casting and city streets lined with spectators toward the end, this could almost certainly be achieved with AI now, so the possibility for this movie is there. Yahoo Movies Quote - "The rights to Stephen King's 1979 novel, The Long Walk, have been acquired by Lionsgate, and according to new reports, the project is set to be adapted into a film directed by Francis Lawrence.". So everyone, Email lionsgate and tell them to get on the job!

I love the book, but I think it would really be difficult to make as a movie. There's not a lot to show the audience. So much of it is an internal struggle. If it was a movie maybe it would be done well as a lower budget film. Bring in some indie talent, young up and coming actors perhaps? Great video. Keep it up 👍

Thank you I appreciate it. I definitely agree it wouldn’t be easy and they’d have to find contained ways to keep the story interesting. I almost visualize it like 12 angry men but with this concept and have it focus on the characters

Difficult but not impossible. There have been plenty of great movies (and not so great) that took place in one setting. (Panic Room, 12 Angry Men, Misery, Locke, The Breakfast Club, Exam, Rear Window). I think they could do more with The Long Walk though, the main focus on the event while individual time given to each character’s backstory, which could be a decent formula for a limited type series. Perhaps even creative liberty given to the guards and how they ended up in their position. Just rambling. I read this book every year, would enjoy seeing an adaptation of it, but I’ll also be content just reading the book.

Thank you. I’ve been waiting impatiently for this to become a movie. It’s way long overdue for an adaptation. I really hope Frances Lawrence gets it right and you know what would be cool? If they cast King veteran Thomas Jane as The Major. That would be dope casting

I argue that it's not a dystopia because the boys volunteer. Only a tiny percent of boys who apply pass the physical and mental tests. Those who do pass are put in a lottery and 200 are picked. 100 walkers and 100 backups but they don't know which they are until the day before the walk. They can backout on April 15 and 31. Even backups can backout. So nobody is forcing them but apparently the parents have no say. It's entirely up the boys to decide to enter and backout if they are picked or to stay with it. If it were a dystopia, the government would pick the 100 boys and there would be no backing out ... like hunger games.

The Long Walk would be snoozefest, visually. They'd have to cut away from the "action" with flashbacks and backstory of characters who are all just gonna die anyway. Maybe after the success of squidgame I could see people interested but then again, the contestants of that show did more than walk.

You said if they fall under 4 mph for 30 seconds they get a warning. So why not stand in place for 25 seconds, then walk 4 mph, then repeat? You won't get any warnings! Actually, the way it works is that each walker has a 2-minute timer. When their speed in the correct direction (they can't just walk any direction at 4+ mph, otherwise they can all walk in different directions) falls under 4 mph, their timer counts down. When their timer reaches 90, 60, 30 they get warnings. They get a ticket if it reaches 0. They lose a warning if they walk an hour without a warning, which means their timers get reset to 60, 90 or 120 which reset back to 2, 1 or 0 warnings respectively. You also said they get shot on the 3rd warning. Many characters got 3 warnings, including Garraty, and no ticket because they started walking before their timer reached 0.

You said its set in the future but the book is clearly dated in the 60s when it was written and 70s when it was revised before publishing. You said King wrote it as Bachman but he hadn't invented Richard Bachman when he wrote it age 18-19 while a freshman at the University of Maine 1966-1967. He made some obvious late 70s revisions before it was published in 1979. Milkmen exists and that's a 60s thing. Do you get your milk from a milk-man? If it were the future, the boys would have smart-phones, they'd be wearing running shoes that wouldn't fall apart, there would be drones following the walk, and Garraty's mom would be driving a self-driving Tesla. The boys would have watched previous walks on KZread and have dressed correctly. They'd all have packsacks with a change of clothing for rain and cold. They'd probably all be popping pain-killers and stimulants.

@@BlueRupees That might have made sense in 1979 when it was published but it no longer makes sense. It's clearly set in the past. There is mention of a milkman. That profession no longer exists. Landline phones would sometimes share a party-line with multiple houses and that is mentioned but it's a thing of the past. The reporter was shooting his video with a big newsreel cine camera. That's film video. Not digital video. Search Google images for newsreel cine camera and you'll see it looks like something from the 50s. Hint 3: Do not, repeat, do not wear sneakers. That was true in the 60s when written and 70s when revised but it's not true today. Garraty was wearing dress shoes which had nails that pulled out. Shoe technology has come a long way since then. Garraty snatches a page of a magazine out of the air and sees a Charles Atlas body-building ad. That's 50s 60s 70s. You never see Charles Atlas ads anymore. The reporters mic was on a wire. It wasn't wireless. Garraty tripped on freshly planted pine trees on the median between lanes on the Turnpike. I've been to entrance and driven both directions on that turnpike. That was probably true in the 60s when King wrote it but those are full grown trees now. Peter says he'd earn $64.40 per week from his job. Priscila was making $90 per week. Garraty sees a station wagon. When is the last time you saw a station wagon? Barkovitch wanted to buy a fleet of Checkers. That taxi company went out of business. They mention The Ladies' Aid. It's been disbanded. One of the guards was eating a C ration. Those have been replaced by Meal Combat Individual (MCI). Scram's wife took the H.S.E.T. to get her high-school diploma. That no longer exists. Barkovitch liked to say "Your mother sucks cock on 42nd Street". That made sense in the 70s since 42nd street was mostly adult theaters and numerous prostitutes roamed that street in New York city. 42nd street has since been renovated and is now a tourist attraction. Pearson said "I use Dial, Don't you wish everybody did?" That was a Dial soap add from the 60s and 70s. I have hundreds of other examples. If it was the future, there would be electric self-driving cars, AI, smart-phones, the Internet, they walkers would be vlogging and live-streaming, there would be drones recording the walk, robots, moon bases, etc.

@@BlueRupees It is an alternate reality. King gives about 20 clues to that. It can be a future America. Anything is possible once it becomes an alternate reality. The one thing that does make it futuristic is the technology they use to track the walking speed of 100 people. That tech would have to register 0 if the boy walked toward the shoulder of the road, or negative if they backtracked. It would have to know what the correct direction is, and triangulate each boys position and compensate for the speed and direction of the halftrack with the measuring devices. How would it uniquely identify 100 boys in a pack? We don't have such technology and it's probably impossible to do without tracker implants and military grade GPS or some kind of overhead sensors on the street lights and phone poles.
