I’m one of those people who is a big advocate for this book. I felt exhausted after reading this book, my legs actually ached. Felt like I was dragging them along! I get that people don’t like the lack of history about why The Long Walk actually started but I read that King was inspired by the Vietnam War when writing this book. I think you can see that through various aspects of the story, such as the televised number draft, having to watch your friends die around you, the horrific scenes they view, the longing for their loved ones back at home, THAT ENDING where the one who goes home is irreparably damaged... but also the fact that it is never mentioned why it starts, what is the point? No one seems to know... it seemingly has no point and is endless, no one knows when it will stop. Awesome vlog, thank you for sharing this! 😘

I had similar feelings on this book -- I actually did a whole review video on it -- and it was ALSO the first Stephen King book I read fully! I was really struggling to also understand their motivation for going on this walk. I thought the worldbuilding needed to be stronger there.

I really enjoyed this book. I think it would have been even better if we had insight on past winners of the walk. I wanted to know more history or background on the actual walk. What the general public felt about it, etc. if there was more background and detail it would have been great.

I totally agree! I would have loved to see more history. I think it really would have added to the story.

I love that we uploaded this on the same day hahaha major twinning! Also, I’m glad you ended up enjoying the book a lot more than I did. I definitely agree with what you were saying how nothing really happens in the book, the premise is basically the entire story. It is super repetitive, I think that’s why I struggled with it so much haha I just wanted moreeee.

I relate to you so much with the death anxiety that arises while reading this. Death is something that legit terrifies me if I think about it too much, and this book throws all those fears right in my face and makes me think about the topics of life, living, and dying, and makes you wonder how far you would really be able to go to live. I also think this is a book that can have different meanings at different life stages. I first read it in 8th grade and it creeped me out, but it didn't hit me on as deep a level as it did when I re-read it last year at age 30. I'm curious to see if I'll get something even different out of it if I re-read it later in life, because I think one's perspective on life and death changes over their lifespan.

This book really does throw death into our faces. . I know for sure I wouldn't be able to make it in this book! I totally agree, that reading this and being older would be even more scary!

I love The Long Walk. It's like a totalitarian/dystopian book. There’s no real backstory, political agenda or anything else. Just teenager boys walking. I love that. I love apocalyptic/dystopian novels that give me feelings of isolation and fighting for survival. They are just walking and talking. And that's all I need in this book. I thought it was great! It's so simple and horrific. I think they go on the walk so they can bring home money to their families.

There was talk abt the sign up process... you had to show a work voucher, take a physical and pass the psychological tests.. which included an essay. Then there were those who were chosen (name drawn) and alternatives. Then they had a deadline to withdraw. This book totally makes more sense now once I read other comments on Gabby's video about it being a reflection of the draft and what was going on around the Vietnam War.

Right, I just meant more of the sign up, not just in hindsite (like actually making it part of the story). And I definitely wanted more history in general... Why and when did the long walk start, etc.

That stuff does get explained. The boys volunteered because they were impoverished and young men tend to not be in tune with their mortality and their ego's are not in check. They all thought they could easily win. The long walk is held to train the soldiers that are in the half track to kill without sympathy. It was more like an entertaining event because we are drawn to morbid things (I mean we all read a 300 page book about it and would absolutely watch a movie version so is it really a surprise?) Yes they do get whatever they want

The only book I’ve read by Stephen King is Carrie and I have to say it wasn’t bad. I am so tempted to read The Long Walk after this but I, just like you, am terrified of death 😳 just hearing you talk about it and the book made my stomach tighten lol but I might have to add it to my TBR 😬

I read this book in 2018, rather I listened to this book and it was way more intense listening to it than reading it. I also remember hearing that Uncle Stevie wrote this book because of the war. These boys signed up for thus and had to wait to see if they were chosen to take the long walk. And for sone reason I think the boys were enticed by what they would gain if the finished the long walk. Of course they all thought they could do it, because, boys!??!?? 😂 but yeah, very intense book.

Like I said, we only realized a few days ago that we both read the same book at the same time and were uploading the video on the same day. One of our mutual friends recommended the book for us to read, so that led to us reading it in the same month. Does it really offend you that we both read the same book at the same time? We each had different opinions, and I stated in my monthly tbr that I was doing this spoiler reading vlog this month, and gabby does a Stephen King vlog every month. There are no rules that say we can't read the same books or make the same videos 🙄🤔🤷‍♀️
