The Long Walk was my first Bachman/King experience and it remains a favorite. But after trying 4mph on a treadmill I don't know how those boys did it. That's not a walk, its just a slow ass jog....

I have short legs, and I did the same treadmill test, and it's easier for me to jog than walk 4 mph. I'd be dead within hours. I seriously doubt anyone could walk as far as they did with those restrictions. You could rest for nearly 2 minutes, then stay 4+ mph for 3 hours and lose your warnings, then repeat. That would be my strategy. But walking with 3 warnings is scary. Olson couldn’t resist a parting shot. “Just don’t stumble, buddy. They don’t warn you again. They just . . .”

@@patcoston I'd get one warning and panic myself in to the next one. Yea 4mph is just a non-committal jog and I'd just as soon run than walk at that point. Maybe in this weird version of the US people regularly walk/run that speed?

@@patcoston yeah but anything could happen, you can get a cramp, blisters, anything! You could even have a laughing fit like Garraty did and you can maybe afford that with one warning,even two, but if you get a cramp with 3 warnings, you're done. You're off to see the farm and there's nothing you can do

@@claudiav5638 any act of nature or terrorism. you could get hit by lightning, shot by some crazy sniper or gunner in the crowd, killed by some walker who snuck in a knife or gun, have a tree fall on you, be electrocuted by a downed power-line ... oh god, I just thought of a crazy scenario. Let's say there's a storm that knocks over a tree that covers the road, and takes down a power line. It's raining and there is live electricity passing all around and no way to pass except leave the road. So your choices are (1) try to climb over the tree and get electricuted (2) stand and and wait for them to clear it, and get shot (3) try to go around by leaving the road and get shot (4) try to escape (5) fight the guards and take over the half-track and escape ... did I miss anything?

@@patcoston they'd probably stop the walk if that happened just like they almost stopped it when the bridge collapsed. So the walkers would actually be pretty lucky if that happened since they'd be able to rest til it's fixed

I read The Bachman books when I was pregnant with my eldest son and The Long Walk still sticks out for me. That was almost 30 years ago

I just finished it and enjoyed it. It pulled me because back in the 80s I had to walk to school and town when I wanted snacks and rent a movie. Also I served in the army and at times we had march 30 or 40 miles, and under no circumstances could we stop. One time my boot strings came undone after one mile and I had to go 35 miles with a loose boot.

This was the scariest of all books! I swear! Forget the monsters! That could happen in the future!

This other kid did an amazing review, on this showed the 4 mile pace, amazing. I love this book, I wish Frank Darabont would make it into a movie already. I love this book, the ending is open. Loved this.

I read this book at the beginning of this year and I loved it!

Just got done listening to the audiobook while I was at work today. The narrator is really good !. My 2nd favorite King novel behind Pet Sematary. I really like the bit you mention where we as the readers are sort of like the ones at home watching the live tv broadcasting of it. I never thought about that !

I’m obsessed with this story

I discovered my mom's old late 80s/early 90s Stephen King collection in the basement one day and picked "The Long Walk" because it comes so highly recommended and I had to DNF it 😬 I thought it was very repetitive and I didn't like all the sexual content.. but I also think, my (german) translation was.. bad. Those teens sounded either like swearing pensioners or eight-year-old boys fighting 😅 This was my first attempt at reading King and I don't really know where to go from here, at the same time I have a feeling, he just might not be an author for me, so I don't know 🤷🏻‍♀️

I suggest trying The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, Duma Key, Gwendy's Button Box, Elevation, Dolores Claiborne, The Mist, Misery. I tried to think of Stephen King novels with little sexual content or obscene talk.

If your English is strong enough to read it in English, you should try that. It would be interesting to see if the translation changes how you feel about the book.

Those Hodder books are so beautiful. It's the perfect backdrop for your channel!!

I just finished reading it, I really don’t get the ending tbh

I seriously fell in love with this book when I first listened to it on audible. And I've listened to it likely three times already granted listening to other books in between, but I keep going back to this one. One of the reasons is because I have a pinched nerve in my back so my legs are practically useless right now and have been for the last few months, but before that happened I did a lot of walking and even though I doubt that I would survive this kind of race where you have to keep a 4 mi an hour pace day and night, I'd definitely like to see how far I would get even though I know I wouldn't make it to the end. A lot of people tell me that I'm a really fast walker and that some people can't keep up with me and I literally have to stop in order for them to catch up. Also just in Garrity's mind you feel their pain, especially in the state that my legs are in when he talks about how your feet and your legs are hurting like mad and here's a spoiler, the first boy to go down goes down because he has a really bad Charlie horse and I'm having Charlie horses almost every night so I empathize with that boy even though thank heavens I'm not in a race where I would get shot for having those. So yeah I really identify with some of the boys in this book because of my current condition. Which is likely why I continue to go back to it once I finish listening to maybe one or two other books and will continue to.

The Long Walk is one of King's books with a strong ending. It, The Mist, The Langoliers, and The Running Man are examples of good books that he didn't know how to finish. Can add 22-11-63 to that list too; good start and middle, bad end.

i almost had to put the book down when he died but by then I was almost done with the book so I just kept going but maaaaaaan that shit was saddd.

I have a question, and it probably a dumb question, but are both books the same story? Or are they different? I've always wondered and can't find the answer anywhere. 😞

One of the Stephen King books I haven't read. In act I don't think I have read any of the Richard Bachman books. Most read!

Where do you get your Hodder editions? Amazon or book outlet? I’ve been looking but they seem hard to find

Frank Darabont who directed The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and The Mist, as well as developed The Walking Dead, had the rights to The Long Walk as well. Unfortunately he let the rights lapse without producing anything. It would have been awesome with him involved.

Would've been excellent had he stuck to the book and judging from his previous movies he sticks to the books pretty closely.

I had one of those people who obsess over the details come through on to my review of it when I read it, they wrote a super long message complaining about everything I apparently got wrong. I'm like, dude, I'm sharing my love for a book, not writing an essay on it. Kind of soured my experience of the book, but it is excellent!

Sorry about that! I've reviewed all 75 English reviews of The Long Walk, but you only had two mistakes. Check my comment to this video and compare scores! FrostyKnives13 has 28 mistakes! I find it fascinating how nobody can review The Long Walk without making mistakes. I define mistake as something that isn't true, or it's only partially-true, like saying it's televised, when the first 75% isn't televised. I've read The Long Walk 21 times, taking notes. I document the mistakes in the book too. Did you know that there are only 97 tickets, but should be 99? I figured out that only 3 words need to change to fix it. I contacted the publisher to see if they want to fix some of these errors. The first mention of Jan says she has dark hair, but every mention after that says it's blonde. Also time move backwards 3 different times. It's noon, then suddenly it's 10:30 am, for example. At one point McVries had 3-warnings, and got another 3rd warning. Stuff like that.

@@patcoston just got done with my first read through yesterday. I get that the book might not be the most polished but I chalk up any inconsistencies to the story being told from Garraty’s point of view, and any inconsistency is just him being so mentally fatigued that details stop getting related accurately. Interested to hear your thoughts on that. There are parts of the book where I take Garraty’s account literally, like Collie Parker death scene, but I don’t take Barkovich’s death literally. I imagine instead of him having the strength at that point to rip his own throat at that he just fell below and got shot through the throat. It doesn’t make the death any less graphic but I imagine that the Walkers might have exaggerated some things because they really were losing their minds. Only after they dig deeper than the point that Stebbens was talking about do they regain their mind, which is in part why Garraty felt the need to keep walking at the end, to dig a little deeper.

Sounds like SK basically came up with The Hunger Games several decades before the first book in that series was published. That’s how the extremely vague plot summary in this video makes it sound.

_THE LONG WALK_ was published in 1979, not 1985. You're thinking of the publication date of _The Bachman Books_

I'm not aware of anyone besides myself that's obsessed with The Long Walk. Hehe. You did great! You are the FIRST KZread Reviewer of The Long Walk to mention the 2-minute timer! You even said that they get 3 warnings when their timer reaches 90, 60, and 30 then shot at 0. You are also the FIRST KZread reviewer to get the age range right! 75 English reviews on KZread and none are mistake free (except those that are short and vague). The reason I got obsessed is because after my first read, I watched a dozen reviews, and none got the details right. I wondered if I was wrong. So, I re-read it taking notes, and confirmed I was right. I find these mistakes fascinating and wonder if this sort of thing happens on all book reviews, or if The Long Walk is special in this way. I've been seeing your comments on a lot of Long Walk videos (even replied to one haha) and I read your Review review- so cool to see someone as interested in this excellent book. Tbh, I don't blame most reviewers for the mistakes; TLW is brilliant but not exactly polished, there's a lot of minor plot/character inconsistencies that may confuse people. The 2 minute timer could be explained clearer.

This book would make a great movie.

I am trying and looking everywhere to get The Long Walk in that cover Edition with the Bloody Shoes!! I cannot find it anywhere. If anyone knows where to find it at all please send me the link. Thank you :) Also what that Edition Cover is from etc. I am in Australia, but I will pay postage from anywhere in the world!!

Hmmm...Reminds me of the Hunger Games. Haven't read the long walk, but got turned onto it through suggestions. As the mother of son, I'm not sure it's going to be my fav, but I'm still intrigued.

Because like all the other walkers Stebbins was mentally and physically at the end of his rope. He was human after all.

Im with you 100%…im not a big reader to begin with…I listened to the audio book for this and even with those its hard for me to follow and get into. This story wasnt bad but I wasnt into as much as everyone else in the comments…but I do think it could make a cool movie…I wish they adapted ALL Stephen King books to movies

I'll probably get crap for this but i think this book is overrated. I have had tons of people reccomend it to me so i read it ( a few years back). Knowing only one person could survive you knew ray would most likely be the winner. I would have loved if King would have thrown us a curveball and killed him off in the first 100 pages but while reading i kept saying "ray will win, im sure this is how the book ends". So while it was enjoyable it was also predictable. I would go with "misery" as my favorite novel from mr. King.

This book has a huge fandom and I just dont get it. Lol was not a big fan of this one.

This book is super disturbing and quite boring. It's just a bunch of guys walking down the street getting shot without any backstory or character development. Don't get the hype around this one given how many other, better King books are out there.

I was very interested in a summary of the book, but I had to stop the video at 5:19. The uptalking is driving me nuts. It’s a huge pet peeve of mine, so don’t take it personally. You might want to take this as some constructive criticism however, research has shown me there’s a fairly large chunk of the population that finds it annoying as well.

I'm in minority over here. I think the novel is overrated. It's very repetitive. Every chapter is about what a kid eats, how he takes a piss and who's gonna get shot. Also....i know this is SPOILER !! but i knew who's gonna win. Yeap, the book starts with him. The end it's up to each one of us, to believe what we want.

There's nothing interesting in this book and each chapter is basically the same. No backstory on the boys or how the long walk came about. Missed opportunity to do an amazing story on a future dystopian society.
