Battery Partner Marcus Ryu, the former CEO and co-founder of Guidewire Software*, reflects on his own entrepreneurial journey in “The Startup as Insurgent,” a talk he originally delivered at Battery’s CloudNY conference in May 2024.
In the talk, a call to arms for ambitious tech founders, Marcus speaks from the heart about an emotional topic: coping with a startup’s position of weakness and embarking on a journey with a high chance of failure. But, he argues, startups also have unique endowments-i.e., “insurgent strengths”-that enable these smaller, ‘weaker’ companies to defeat the larger forces (incumbents, status quo etc.) arrayed against them.
