The Startle reflex and how to 'calm' out of it

The startle reflex is activated when we hear sudden noises above 80 decibles, if we slip and lose stability, or when immersed in cold water. But if your startle reflex becomes overly sensitive here are some actions to support you to come back into your body calmly.

With me it is loud sounds that continue. Such as fireworks or even popping balloons. It’s not just once but multiple reactions.

Thank you Molly for these practices to calm the body. I have been using touch a lot this last year. The jaw and eyes are new areas for me, TMJ!

Yes touch is so soothing. :) Eyes and jaw are fabulous places to get curious about too.

Ok. So firstly I'd say once we are triggered what we need to do is just get out of the space we are in so the system can settle. And then slowly we can build up capacity to change our nervous systems without leaving. And as a general rule you have to practice outside the triggering situation to build the neural memory so that when you are triggered you can clearly find your way to that process/practice that settles/grounds/refocuses you.. It's similar to meditation in that after a number of months you find you can choose the learnt behaviour outside the home practice and slowly you can use it in stressful situations. :)

nope this isn't protective. i have misophonia and my life is hell. I'm startled by everything. i also have sleep deprivation and tinnitus now. fans and white noise don't help, i think it's reactive tinnitus because I hear high pitched sounds with white noise. I also have severe tmj. doctors act like i can control this or overcome it by sheer force of will. this is hell, please help.

Hi Kit. It starts out as protective but becomes dysfunctional. It sounds like you need some private in person sessions. Where do you live? Maybe google Feldenkrais Practitioner in my area and get some specific support. :)

Hi Cindy. I am a Feldenkrais Practitioner but have also trained in Ideokinesis and Pilates. I come from a Dance and Improvisation background and have done many years of Body Mind Centering and Bartenieff Fundamentals. While I have not studied Thomas Hanna's work he was also a Feldenkrais Practitioner and a philosopher. He coined the word Somatics and I teach Somatics at a performing arts university so he is included in the discussions on the linage of Somatic Practitioners. I am very interested in Philosophy so perhaps we have a similar way. :)
