Well, I did not expect a very traditional production from Pelly. But I found his Viennese Fille du Regiment and the Paris Barbiere very original and funny. Meistersinger is a different pair of shoes. I cannot tell much having watched only the OV trailers. The stage set seems not to be very atmospheric though. Easy to say having seen and sung in this legendary Mannheim National Theater production which has not yet found its match (Björn Waag, here in Madrid singing Ortel, had the part of Beckmesser back then - interested to see him again on the 18th.) Looking forward to it.

I'm grateful for the tip about Mannheim - I may look for it when it's next on their schedule! Living in Berlin, I'm still waiting to see a good production of Meistersinger.

​​​@@dphillips4877Terribly sorry, mate. This Mannheim production has for long gone off the schedule😢. Moreover, the NTM is being completely renovated (Flying Dutchman streamed here on OV was the last performance before their closure). They will reopen not before season 2028/2029. I still have a photo of this masterly historic Old Nuremberg scene with its incredible depth. If you are interested and know a way to upoad it for you, let me know.

Went this past Saturday. Best opera I’ve seen in the last 2 years. All stagers and directors need to learn from this. The importance of opera is the opera itself, not whatever story they want to tell, specially if it’s politicized. Keep politics, woke BS and your own story to yourselves, just listen, watch and learn from great opera masters. MOGA

I only have one question - can he read music and did he study the score of the opera he's directing?

Well, he seems to have got the gist of the plot and its manyfold aspects. This is more than one can say of many other contemporary directors.

Yes, Laurent can read music, and even learned to sing in his prime. The real question is : working as much as he does, does he find enough time to study deeply the pieces he stages.
