i honestly think commander tartar was the best build up, whereas order/smollusk was the worst, they could have done so much more with it.

@@sharky_xanderrrr I agree with you Sharky. Commander Tar Tar had everything I had ever wanted with these villains. Interesting motives, a neat plot twist, and build up throughout the whole journey. While I have grown to appreciate Order/Smollusk since Side Order's release, I can see why they're pretty bad.

Exactly. At least Mr Grizz was built up well if you were a Splatoon 2 player and saw the signs coming. He was just disappointing if you started with Splatoon 3 and just went "Ok, so there's a bear now I guess?" But Order/Smollusk was just a full on nothing burger with nothing at all.

Octavio had so much potential for a great redemption arc and it would've been fun to see him have some dialogue with some of the other characters such as Cuttlefish or the Squid Sisters, possibly being a mentor.

@@sharkbite7922 EXACTLY! Octavio should've been our mentor and served the role of Craig Cuttlefish for Return of the Mammalians after the 1st boss fight. It would've given us his perspective on everything so far and driven his character growth and would've made that ending pay off in such a satisfying way

Ngl DJ Octavio could still hate the Inklings after Splatoon 3, just a little less because his options in that story were: 1) Team up with Inklings to survive 2) Die Just because he teamed up with them ONCE in the entire hundred years since the great turf war doesn't mean he likes them

I also found it strange that Octavio was considered "redeemed" at the end of Splatoon 3 by the fans since he was simply just saving his own hide and his people, not being a good guy. That said, that got flushed away when I think in some interview, the devs themselves call him redeemed. It seems the devs wanted Splatoon 3 to be so much more, but couldn't do it, but instead of realizing they couldn't do what they wanted and to try next time to do all of what they wanted, they'd rather just... pretend like they did do it? And carry on and expect us to understand things that didn't happen? Like how Splatoon 3 was supposed to be the end of the Squidbeak Saga, except... nothing in Splatoon 3 did a good job of feeling like a good end that caps off on everything they've done up until now. Splatoon 3 just felt like another villain of the week, and Side Order was just a "Remember how good Octo Expansion was?" DLC. Like, that original S3 plot that would've involved every Agent feels like they were trying to get that idea across, but we didn't get that. And not even because they gave us a different, better idea, it was just that they couldn't pull it off so we just didn't get it.

@@Freelancer837 I still say Octavio's a hero... for the Octaliens. If you read the art book of the first splatoon there's comics in there that show how dire the situation is. Stealing the zapfish meant saving society and countless lives. The Splatoon 3 stories are all flash and no substance, but the final bosses are hype so I kinda like them (especially RotM cuz you can skeleton run it)

Bonus mishandling of Octavio (though not really for Splatoon): He should've been a boss fight in Smash Bros Ultimate just as other Nintendo villains have always tended to be. Yet instead he's only a PNG

I hate how many people got baited by the DARK LORE when the writing is just random turds being thrown at an asbestos wall.

Order ≠ Tartar. They had no similarities aside from viewing the world in a negative light. Tartar was an AI made by humans to pass their knowledge onto whatever comes next. He saw the Inklings and Octolings as unworthy because they did the exact thing that brought about the downfall of humans: Fight over meaningless things. So he created a sludge to erase all living species and start with a blank slate. Order on the other hand hated how chaotic the world was. No systems, no schedule, completely unpredictable. This was because some scientists that Marina worked with secretly wanted to return to their world of order in Octarian bunkers. So Order was going to use greyscaling to rip every beings "chaos" from them. Making them into a mindless husk from which he can control and create a perfect systematic world. One wants Genocide, the other wants Control. Grizz wanted Transformation of the world by turning everything back to mammals, and Octavio wanted Justice. Every one of these troupes has been used for a villain at some point in history. It's sorta hard to come up with UNIQUE motives nowadays. But that's just my opinion of course

I never realised how undercooked some villains in Splatoon were, so here's some unsolicited advice on how I'd "fix" them: Octavio: Give him some silly dialouge during the radio chats and maybe even a goofy uncle figure for Neo 3 (this idea came from a comment on a animation) Mr. Grizz: A bit like you said, give us small lore bits instead of it all being After Alterna, maybe an alegory written by someone throughout journals and the last part has smth like "story based on the tragedy of Bear #03" Order: After F10 and F20 (maybe every 5 floors idk), have Marina give examples of it being soulless and without symphaty, maybe even some hint that you get more lore if you beat Smolusk w/ every pallete, smth like "Huh, I feel like my memory is splitting with another souls memories, maybe Order wants to make sure we can't stop it" Like I said, these are some random unsolicited ideas I came up with on the spot (also idk how you don't have more subs, I really liked the editting on the video :3 )

I also think with side order there wasn’t the same stakes Like with Tartar and Grizz there was a real threat to us or the world but with smollusk- it’s a simulation so Marina can just hack it to fix things

A ton of people would have been turned into drones for Order if Eight simply didn't vibe with Spectrum Obligato. it still pales in comparison to world destruction though lol

I wouldn't go that far. His buildup relies almost solely on whether you played Splatoon 2 or not and if you saw that they were hyping him up as the next villain. Splatoon 3 doesn't do a good job of setting him up for when he's actually the villain. Even his motivation doesn't really make sense. Why does he want people to all be Mammals? Yeah, he's a mammal. But he doesn't really ever establish any reason why he cares about that sort of stuff. He's solely just a big capitalist CEO who only cares about his business and nothing more. Even the main story of 3 portrays him this way. So why did he want mammals back? As long as he's got a way to make money and people to do cheap labor for him, he shouldn't care whoever they are. And it doesn't help either that the mammalian enemies also are just ripoffs of the Sanitized Octolings, but this time with no depth or any kind of explanation as to what they are or how they came to be. Mr Grizz was completely mishandled due to the Splatoon 3 dev team being just an unprepared, junior development team and Splatoon 3's general lack of quality that can be seen throughout the whole game.

It wasn't just his army, it was his entire society

... I'm kinda tired that we must make everything a 'problem.' Lemme bring some positivity: I don't really care about villians being boring unless it's lazy story telling. In old school stories, Bowser kidnaps Peach and Mario saves her. He was just the bad koopa king who turned toads into bricks. There is always at least some effort put into the characters of Splatoon: With Octavio he is a 'bad guy' in the eyes of the inklings but a hero to the octolings. Tartar is the closest to evil we get. Mr. Grizz was set up since S2 and got the Alterna logs linking him to humans. I'm still finishing Side Order, but while I didn't get the appeal of wittle octo guy at first but I like his perspective and his notes on the weapons. And Deep Cut. How cool is it that we get to fight the main idols of the game? Also Big Man's fight is a reference to an older Mario Battle. Story wise they only have one reason they show up (collecting stuff for Splatsville) and they got shoved into ending the agent storyline, so I think they are the most undercooked of all the villians for sure. For the sake of what the game tries to do, it works plenty.

While I personally am not a fan of how the Splatoon villains are, I'm glad others don't mind and have different thoughts on them. Plus I do love their designs, especially Grizz and Order

Next game, the real villain is you. It would work similar to salmon run, where we aid the villain in its plan of getting the golden eggs.

Awesome video! I like the topic, the footage was well edited and the music perfectly fit each entry! Love the variety you went with, especially adventure's end as it fits Octavio quite well given that many people consider him the Bowser of the Splatoon series. Ultimate Show was good as well. The points you bring up do highlight how bad this issue has gotten and honestly more people should see this including the development team. It's like you said, Tar Tar was really the best villain and the ones we've gotten lately have been pretty lackluster.

the fact that Tartar was barely mentioned in splatoon 3 side order genuinely disappoints me, He deserves more recognition and to top it all off Nintendo legit just copied his script and changed it abit for Mr. grizz and Order, if he doesn't appear in splatoon 4 im buying splatoon 2 just for the octo expansion "B-b-but hes dead!!!" he could make a comeback anytime soon because if we get more horrible villains the series lore will be absolute dogwater

Honestly Mr Grizz building is perfectly fine for me. The radio intermissions are more than enough for me to be invested in him. The issue for me is that his motivations and plans just makes him tartar 2.0 which is just underwhelming.

@@MAR_abisal I can definitely see the similarities between the two. Wish we had some more unique motivations beyond rehashing old ones from past villains.

Smollusk’s biggest problem (in my opinion) is that its backstory doesn’t really have a satisfying conclusion. After learning what caused him to go rogue, it just ends there and Smollusk only cares about them coming to visit it again. To be honest, having Marina as the villain in Side Order would make a far more interesting story. We could relate to Marina for doing what she did and her accepting chaos as a part of her life would be handled better. (In Side Order it is a bit random) (Btw your content is amazing just wanted to say)

I know they already did the whole evil idol plot before with Callie, but it was underdeveloped. Here they could've done some very interesting things with Marina

DJ Octavio might be the best actually if they expand with what they have. I mean, the guy is basically Dr. Doom. Who doesn't like Dr. Doom? A great villian for either simpler repetitive narratives or more complex and nuanced plots. I want more Octavio, and if the series ever gets more of a scifi focus, that's when he'll be at his best.

Legitimately I think the series' shift in focus over time killed the value of a lot of its characters and the villains got exemplified by this. Splatoon 1 was a pretty surface-level game with some secret lore that helped bring a bit of context to things, but with 2 and especially 3 trying to make its worlds and characters "deeper" and more valuable they either do a decent job by having the important bits actively present in the story or they hide away details in off-screen events or logs. Creating depth takes effort and the Splatoon devs don't ever fully commit in their writing. If these guys were simpler or had more active elements they would be good, but they tow a weird middle ground in this weird middle ground series

@OliyTC I strongly agree with you. There's so much potential here that ends up being ignored or half balked. Wish the devs put a bit more effort for the story modes as that is what is often used for the marketing of the series. Especially with Splatoon 3

I wouldn't agree, but here's the thing because first, I would rather feel sorry for the octoling after they have been ungrounded for a century after the great turf war if you know what I'm talking, but if there's no lack of land, then things would be different. 2nd, I was shocked when Mr. Grizz was revealed to be the main antagonist of splatoon 3's story campaign and Mr. Grizz dose has a tragic backstory. However, his plan is about covering earth with the fuzzy oozes once he has enough salmon eggs. And 3rd, I would also rather smollusk has some dialogs.

IMO one reason for all of Mr. Grizz's lore being only accessible from the logs is that no character needs to concern themselves with it. Only you (the player) can feel empathy for the villain's motives because only you are aware of them. Yes, they are still evil and yes, they still need to be stopped, but is seriously absolutely no one in the cast going to acknowledge that Mr. Grizz is a lot, and I mean a lot more than an oversized and furry villain?

(holy yap batman This is my excuse to share my Side Order review/rant, and to be fair, it has nothing to do with Splatoon 3's villians. Feel free to ignore or just take this as my comment for the algorithm, since I like all the points you made in this vid 💖) To be honest, I feel like side order was a lot of wasted potential. I like the roguelike and challenge aspect to it (I start a new run whenever I don't like the ranked mode on rotation), but storywise is feels so meh. Granted, I like Side Order, but coming off of Octo Expansion it's just disappointing. Judging Side Order as its own singluar campaign- Engaging enough gameplay to support multiple playthroughs, though the beginning levels are a bit too easy for my tastes. It really varies difficulty wise. Through dialogue and scenes, the story of Side Order makes sense though the nature of the setting lacks proper stakes, at least ones that are visible to the player other than the parallel canon boss fight. On its own, side order functions as a decent story on a smaller scale, which I personally see as the most impactful on the first playthrough. Judging Side Order compared to Octo Expansion- Spices up the typical gameplay seen in most story campaigns in this series, which I appreciate. Only gripe is level design, but I will give it to them that going out for every single floor wouldve been too much and take too long. I think Side Order struggles the most in its stakes. Its apparent from the beginning with the setting taking place in vitural reality. The plight of the octolings described in the dialogue wouldve been more impactful with the inclusion of possibly more side characters or something along the lines of mem cakes. Side Order feels like a follow up that added little to follow up on. You don't even need big set pieces like the final boss fight in OE to make something like this work. SO just feels so barebones (especially with the bosses, with no gimmicks or changes for subsequent runs it just feels piss easy). And that's what makes Side Order disappointing. Even with a reduced scale, it gives little to chew on, except for Marina/Pearl's relationship and Acht. anyways 7/10, I will still play, i have more thoughts but thats enough for tonight Also, this is my own personal gripe, but the lack of a proper Agent Four boss fight is shameful. (Imo) Parellel Canon is very very easy and the fact that we never get to see agent four, not even as a secret boss, at the end sucks.

@Pippylo.l Don't worry about it feel free to express your thoughts. For me, Side Order should've had more bosses and an endless mode to encourage more replayability. After a while, the limited weapons to chose from and floors to explore get repetitive. It's still sucks we never got to see Agent 4 properly return despite the past agents beging brought back

I'm not the biggest fan of villain characters, so I don't particularly care for any of the Splatoon villains. The closest Splatoon villain I sorta like is Smollusk. But that is only because I think it is adorable.

IMHO not just Octavio but all of the Octarians got done awfully dirty. I guess they decided to stop at "people have Octolings now, you like Octolings right? so that's it idk". I feel dumb for investing my interest in Octavio's side of the story. There's probably a strict mandate preventing any satisfying development outside of "the idols have learnt the new meaning of friendship", I feel bad for all the other Octarians who got put into the bin for rightfully fighting for their freedom. Mr Grizz was just unwarranted, I'd rather have him as a corrupt and greedy as all high heaven businessman who doesn't give a single spit about lives that his business affects. Certainly better than the wet fart S3 gifted us with.

@@kingsnooze4394 So far, my revision for Octavio would be to have New Agent 3 be his mentor with the Squid Beak Splatoon showing up later on. But if you have any ideas, feel free to share them

Honestly I'm still hoping for a inkling villain in splatoon 4 I remember it being a thing in one of rassicas' predictions for mr grizz's identity but since the squidbeak splatoon storyline is finished now it'd be a good time to give it a shot since it gives opportunities for motives other than hating inklings

I’m pretty sure the reason that Mr. Grizz didn’t get screen time until the end was so that the player could be caught of guard when they see what he really looks like. If it revealed him earlier it would’ve ruined the suspense. The only thing that I didn’t like about mr grizz in the story was how his personality seemed a bit dull compared to his personality when he makes comments in Salmon Run.

Personaly, i was kinda dissapointed in Mr grizz being the only mamalian despite the title being plural (btw i was just expecting another clone of judd kind of shenaningans that would appear for tri-color, not smth crazy) but i was mostly dissapointed because he was there as the plot twist villan and nothing much more, he got a cool boss fight, some lore and then that’s it. For someone whose been around for so long i was expecting a bit more. Honnestly he just feels like he’s there as a necesity to plug the Octavio final boss sized hole for the main story mode Also it makes you wonder what happens to Grizz co and the golden eggs now ? Lil judd took over and he is said to want revenge on judd for being inferior but he really dosen’t have enough going for him more than a comical villan, does that means Mr Grizz will come back ? Even though they said everything related to story mode just concluded (wich by proxy includes him as well) ?. Also i remember a lot of people would have preffered him being a human instead, wonder if that feeling’s still around today.

Ok, so, that ive watched all of this, I've come to think that splatoon 3 is the literal worst game in the entire series Before anyone says anything, hear me out. Number one: The Side Order DLC, i interpret it as a kind of money grab, as it reuses the concept of Tartar's villain, into a DLC which is kind of boring, and that you would only play as a time killer and not for fun. As well as the fact that the DLC is shorter than Hasbulla. Number Two: The Mr. Grizz boss fight is very slow paced until the very end, where octavio just randomly comes in with no build up at the end, and then it's revealed that Octavio has a vaccum on top of the new Octobot King, a fact that was never hinted at, or implied. And number 3: I feel like the developers may have wanted to get some money of off the die-hard fanbase that splatoon has by releasing a new game, but the game has lukewarm villains, and not only that, but the great zapfish was stolen a 3rd time, was held on the rocket launch station, and had a very brief dialog about it, and it was never mentioned again.
