The Spandakarika - "Song of the Sacred Tremor" - Kashmir Shaivism

The Spandakarika, or "Song of the Sacred Tremor," is one of the most important Tantric texts in the tradition of Kashmiri Shaivism. It is said to have been transmitted directly to the sage Vasugupta from the hands of Shiva on Mount Kailas. In his commentary on these fifty-two stanzas, the sage Ksemaraja described them as the heart of the Mahamudra, the Great Cosmic Gesture.

    Dear sister, I hardly know what to say ... remember I had asked you if you were familiar with any tantric texts? This is It. It is unfortunate how misunderstood Tantra is in the modern world but this teaching is so clear. I knew you would find a perfect teaching, in which the recognition of the Absolute is at the heart of it all ... as well as render it in your beautiful creative way with lovely music 🎶

    I immediately recognized gaia sanskrit's amazingly beautiful voice and music. Wow! What a perfect compliment to your beautiful voice and the beautiful commentary. Thanks for bringing the shaivite perspective again, such an amazingly deep and rich tradition. May all beings be liberated, may it be for a blessing. Om namah shivaya, om 💚🙏💜 Also, as a side note, idk if you have had the opportunity to check out the relatively new publication of the Recognition Sutras by Christopher Wallis, but I highly recommend for any who enjoy the depth of wisdom as you do. It is so very robust, elegant, and just simply beautiful, as philosophy and a guide to experience the Divine in this very life.

    Tremor is a fresh and perfect translation, because "vibration" and "resonance" have become cliches. Tremor contains not only the objective reality of energy-oscillation, but the subjective reality of divine ecstasy.

    Is the sacred tremor same as aham sphurna that Ramana Maharshi mentions ?

  • @michaelmcclure3383

    @michaelmcclure3383

    3 жыл бұрын

    I would say so. Yes. "Therefore, leaving the corpse-like body as an actual corpse and remaining without even uttering the word ‘I’ by mouth, if one now keenly enquires, ‘What is it that rises as ‘I’? then in the Heart a certain soundless sphurana, ‘I-I’, will shine forth of its own accord. It is an awareness that is single and undivided, the thoughts which are many and divided having disappeared. If one remains still without leaving it, even the sphurana - having completely annihilated the sense of the individuality, the form of the ego, ‘I am the body’ - will itself in the end subside, just like the flame that catches the camphor. This alone is said to be liberation by great ones and scriptures" Ramana. So my sense is that this "Sacred Tremor" may be more precisely analogous to the point at which that Sphurana returns to its source and itself subsides. Others may have more insight into the text. It's the first time I've seen it.

    I like yours and Michael's perspective and also feel there is definitely correlation there. Just to add a tiny bit more context (because the spanda lineage is very rich and deep),... there is also a model of creation and dissolution as a spanda or pulsation or vibration of Awareness whereby it takes on contraction to enter the realm of seeming separate discrete objects and persons, or in ths other direction (where I think we here are all hopefully heading) towards greater and greater expansion of Awareness whereby we return to the source and find our identity as not separate from the Divine. And going forth we are able to see all of creation and ourselves as vibrations in and of the One, shiva/shakti in perfect harmony and dancing in reverie for the sheer joy and love of being/awareness/bliss that is our true nature. There's so much more that can be said because the spanda lineage shows us how everything is made up of this pulsating Awareness right down to even the manifestation of physical objects, but hopefully that adds something of value to the contemplation. May it be a blessing, Om namah shivaya, om 💚🙏💜 Edit: Also, the opening verses about shakti opening and closing her eyes may also perhaps be a good candidate for what is meant by sacred tremor. It might be helpful to note that the word here translated as tremor (which is spanda, as in spanda karīka) can also be translated as pulsation or vibration or even oscillation, as in oscillation between and within 2 polarities.

  • @michaelmcclure3383

    @@No1Particular i like how the Spanda talks about it in terms of remembrance. Like in the story they have about God getting lonely . So he becomes all beings.. But he eventually gets tired of that game of being a separate entity and after a while returns home. Then he finally remembers who he is and has been all along hahaha That's the kids story version of the teaching 😅 I would doubt the lonely God part, but the remembrance is right.
