    But, pronounced as you did, sounds very strange for a Hungarian, and I don’t see the necessity of doing so. Pronouncing what you call the “names” of the letters they will sound exactly equal as used in speech, because, as you stated, Hungarian is a phonetic language and their letters sounds equal in any word, including in their “names”. In English there are differences between the pronunciation of the “names” of the letters and their pronunciation in different words, because English is not a phonetic language, and the same letter could sound differently depending of the word. This is the reason for the necessity of “names” for the letters in English, but this is not the case in Hungarian.

    Actually this is an interesting fact: if you pair all the letters with their 'y counterparts', you can see how they are connected. For example you have to change the pronunciation of t to get ty in the exact same way as you have to alter n's to get ny. The only exception is gy, because it's pair isn't g, as the alphabet suggests, but d. So the fact that you use d as part of a combination to indicate gy makes much more sense 😄

  • @KugleeKuglee

    @KugleeKuglee

    @@KitaKiyonori much more sense if they use dy 😄 ż is like a soft Z and this letter is formed much further in the mouth than G. gy (or dy 😄) is instant follow from G or vice versa. Very simple: Y here is the softener formative and same rule on ny, ty. LY vs J is an interesting "animal". Now these two word has same pronunciation. Before XVI century people used L and a bit softer version L. This was the original LY (nobody use nowadays) . That time LY wasn't same as J but around XVI century the original LY pronunciation slowly died out and changed to J. That's why there are two same pronunciation latter in Hungarian language. This is always debate among linguistics about to delete LY from the alphabet. 😄

    Well I found that s-added alphabets mean to be post-alveolar sound. C [ts] to cs [tʃ], dz [dz] to dzs [dʒ], z [z] to zs [ʒ], and add z to s to make [s] sound, since single s sounds [ʃ]... It's not so confusing writing system! I heard that recently ancient (traditional) Hungarian alphabets, rovásírás are revived. Which system will survive in the future? Interesting!

    I love Hungarian. It’s so unique. For those that don’t know, the only (big) languages that exist in the language family are Hungarian, Estonian, Finnish (and Saami). And I like that it’s like Japanese and Finnish in that if you know the letters you’ll (pretty much) know how to say words that you read without having heard them before. But I find it so strange that an alphabet has more than one letter as one letter, but that’s like Japanese except Japanese has one sign while Hungarian uses the latin letters still. E and é isn’t the same sound, just short and long like a and á? I didn’t know, that’s difficult. And dzs and gy sounds almost exactly the same. A lot of the letters sounds the same it seems.

    You can immediately spot the native Hungarian accent, not because you do anything wrong, but because you do not instinctively try to add that extra multi-vowel open mouth roundness that many native English speakers do.

    My wife and I will be in Hungary in September 2022. My opinion is that immersion into any culture begins with communication. I've been attempting to learn for the past 9 months with a focus on the alphabet basic greetings and numbers. Like you, there isn't an expectation of fluency. All the best with your efforts and above all else, have confidence in that effort!

    A very big 'koszonom' for helping me understand the particulars of the Magyar alphabet (I work with some Hungarians, and they have been trying to teach me Magyar for the last year, but it has been very hard.) This was shared by one of them to help me understand your alphabet a lot better. Ps, the music wasn't so bad either!

    In 1982, under the patronage of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, a linguistics book called "A Magyar Szokeszlet Roman Elemeinek Tortenete" was printed, proving that 2,333 words from the basic lexicon of the Hungarian language are borrowed from the Romanian language.
