Soul man Mazzy! Never forget U.K. Northern Soul it brought a host of forgotten USA soul artists, music and obscure record labels to GB it was born out of the British Mod scene of the early 60s and had a massive revival from 1993 - 1996. I can recommend an excellent book by Elaine Constantine & Gareth Sweeney “Northern Soul An Illustrated History” Peace and Love Graham.

Wonderful to see Ann Peebles featured in the tag along with the Edward Hawkins and his choir. I actually have his records and for some reason, didn't feature his record in my Soul tag. I remember he and his gospel choir came to my elementary school in Oakland and they performed a few songs. It was an amazing experience to say the least. Oh such Happy Days!

Nice review sir. I agree with you that "I Believe (When I Fall in Love)" is a great Stevie Wonder song. The first time I actually heard it was when Art Garfunkel did a version to open his album "Breakaway". I've watched a couple of these tag videos and I am hoping someone eventually mentions the great Wilson Pickett.

Nice work Mr Maslov. On the lack of audiophile Ann Peebles reissues there are a couple. Straight from the Heart was done by Speakers Corner and VMP and I can't stand the rain was a Rough Trade Essential remastered at Mastercraft, but I don't know from what source.

One day after watching this video, I found an original pressing of that Staple Singers album in one of Belgium’s best second hand shops. And some Parliament / P-Funk All-stars originals too!!

Another great post Mazzy. Thank you. As soon as you mentioned female soul singer, I immediately flashed on my Ann Peebles lps, even before you showed yours. I’ve always loved her singing. You then showed Edwin Hawkins’s group. Got to see them at Winterland 1969 i believe it was. They were on the same bill as Creedence Clearwater. Blue eyed soul. Righteous Brothers, absolutely. That viral video on KZread of Bobby Hatfield singing “Unchained Melody” on the Andy Williams Show is simply perfection in every way. Bobby absolutely nailed the song, as he shows with a tiny little lip bite as he concludes. Watch it if you haven’t. By the way, two nights ago in Santa Cruz, I saw The Third Mind,, based 100% on your recommendation. Did you see them when they were up in your neck of the woods I hope? Those folks can sure play. Thanks for the video you did showing those 4 Al Kooper/Mike Bloomfield records leading up to Third Mind. That’s exactly the kind of video I love finding from yourself and other vinyl community members. You honor the past and then bring it up to today. Thanks very much.

For whatever it may be worth, Wikipedia has a definition claiming the term was originated by a Philadelphia DJ in the mid-60s to refer to Righteous Brothers then more commonly to other white soul singers.
