The B&W film Tony was watching was the James Cagney vehicle The Public Enemy, about a mobster that made it to the top but went a little crazy. He always had his mom in his corner. Cagney's love of his mom in the movie juxtaposes with Tony's toxic relationship with his Mom. David Chase is a frickin' genius with story and plot. Well made episodes.

... Yes it was Pussy in the mirror, then Tony looked to see if he was really there.... Tony also finally broke down over his mother dying when he was watching that movie where the mother was waiting for her son to come home, she was happy, fluffing his pillows not knowing her son was killed... This made Tony emotional thinking about his own mother, that's when he started crying.

Jamie Lynn Sigler had a funny story about Nancy Marchand. Most actors do not enjoy filming scenes where they have to eat. You have to do so many takes that you try to pick at the food so you don't end up making yourself sick by the end of the day. Well, Nancy apparently relished the eating scenes. It is noticeable in several of the episodes where Livia eats dinner at Tony's. Nancy Marchand was a very slim lady all her life but she apparently put on a few pounds by the time she did this show.

The FBI used a special kind of warrant where you don't have to present it, which you hear the Judge refer to by its nickname, a sneak and peek warrant. They are actually called Delayed Notice Warrants, because they have to tell you eventually, but not until after, presumably so the criminal isn't warned about these kind of things like a bug planted in your basement. Presumably, Tony would be presented the warrant at his trial after the FBI gets what they need from the bug.

Yes, that's right, THE James Cagney. The one who never called anyone a dirty rat. Two other classic gangster movies with him are White Heat ("Top o' the world, Ma!"), and Angels with Dirty Faces, in whiched he is sentanced to the electric chair, and the prison chaplain, who had been his best friend when they were kids, tells him to act afraid, so that the kids who currently worship him will not follow in his footsteps. He also won the Oscar for Yankee Doodle Dandy. He reprised his role from that film in The Seven Little Foys with Bob Hope. He only did that on the condition that he not get paid because that film's subject, Eddie Foy, Sr., had been so kind to him early in his career.

Great reaction! Just wanted to step in and mention that the film Tony is watching is called "The Public Enemy", from 1931 with James Cagney. It's one of the original gangster films from which many of the tropes we now take for granted originated. It's definitely a bit outdated now, but it still worth a watch. The parallel to the Sopranos is that the film character's mother loved her son, had faith in him, would dance and sing thinking she would see him....but his own mother, who just died, not so much. Be well and continue to do great reactions. I'm a fan.

No. You did not imagine the bit in the mirror about Pussy standing there. Without giving any spoilers away, Tony will at times think about the people that have died as a result of his business and personal life, and the ways which that will manifest in the show will be many. The dive into the psychology of Tony is one of the more subtle aspects of the show, but very well written for those who pay attention and can read between the lines. Stay tuned.

Well, between Pussy appearing in the mirror, Christopher being told "3 o'clock" while he was unconscious after having been shot, and the psychic asking Paulie on behalf of Mike "if it still itches", and so on, there are subtle hints that there is more to the Sopranos than just psychology too. There's a tiny sliver of supernatural elements to this show. Aside from that, I do agree that one of the most excellent parts of this show over all are all the subtle, actual psychological moments.

This show tends to make background characters main characters throughout the seasons, even characters like Patsy and Gigi were in season 2 in small roles Also Ralphie's character was changed due to Nancy Merchant's (Livia) death. He was originally going to be a member of New York, and defect to the Sopranos. Hence why he appears out of nowhere. And James Cagney is one of the greatest actors in history

The movie is one of the great classics of all time, with iconic lines well before other gangster films like Scarface. The lead actor, also considered one of the greatest of all time. I feel a reaction coming. You'll enjoy it as much as Tony.

The Public Enemy with James Cagney was one of the first Gangster films of the 1930s. Directed by William (Wild Bill) Wellman, the grapefruit in the face is the most famous scene.

The movie Tony Soprano was watching at the end of the episode was "Public Enemy Number One" directed by William Wellman. He's the director whom Noah references. (Edit) Correction: "The Public Enemy". I mixed up the titles with the movie and a song by James Brown (also a classic). Great reactions.

22:53 - a Godfather reference with the undertaker... inspired by CGI effect used with Oliver Reed in Ridley Scott's Gladiador, for The Sopranos it cost about $250,000 and took two weeks to put together previous footage of Nancy Marchand on a body double! too bad her hair and the lights don't match the scene... it's a great tribute of a final act though! rest in peace Nancy Marchand and as for Livia Soprano, who's sorry now...who's sorry now...

Hi guys, Tony is watching the classic James Cagney mobster movie Public Enemy from 1931. It's the classic scene where James Cagney squirts a grapefruit into Jean Harlow's eye. You need to watch James Cagney movies on your channel, he was a national treasure. A true Hollywood movie star. Definitely put Public Enemy, White Heat, Footlight Parade and Yankee Doodle Dandy, to name a few, on your viewing list. The first two are mobster films, and since you love The Sopranos, I think you'll love to see how the Mafia was first portrayed in the beginning of film. 😉

Episode 2 features Tony watching the film "The Public Enemy", starring James Cagney. You might want to give it a try or react even, but the scene where is at the tied up & drops on the front door while his Mum's upstairs getting his bed made, all that she knows at that moment is that he's coming home. That's why the Mum is so happy.

The movie Tony was watching was a very well known classic crime drama from the 1930's called The Public Enemy starring James Cagney. There's a very famous clip from the movie where Cagney, playing a gangster, smashes half a grapefruit into his lady's face at the breakfast table. It's one of those very iconic scenes from the 30's gangster films which were huge at the time.
