I still have to fast forward past the rape scene when I watch this episode. That is a testament of how well it was done. The actor who played the "employee of the month" has made appearances on Soprano social media sites and the fans immediately pile up on him. That's just one of those things then, I guess. Probably why they advice actors/actresses who are GONNA "make it big," to not do certain scenes/roles/etc. Like how most German actors have vowed to NEVER do Nazi stuff, because then that's what they end up known for. One of the few to escape that was Christoph Waltz, even though he does probably the most intimidating Nazi in the history of cinema, but he broke free of it because of how amazing he is in EVERY role he does, not just the Nazi role (he's nearly equally as good in Django Unchained, for example). Or how they tell the guys not to play sex offenders on Law and Order and shit like that. Because then those actors, even if they have star material and the ability to "make it big," will thenceforth FOREVER BE KNOWN as "the pedophile on Law and Order: SVU," or "The Nazi who killed all those Jews in the holocaust movie." They'll never be known as their names again, just those villainous roles.

This was an extremely impactful episode. Very raw and disturbing. However, not only did it allow me to feel significant empathy for Melfi (and everyone who has been raped) but it made me respect Melfi so much. A victim of rape would understandably feel powerless after suffering like that. But now, Melfi had the power to decide if that rapist scumbag lives or dies. She lost that power when the police fucked up the evidence, but she has it again. But she doesn't go in for revenge. She does, ultimately, the moral thing. Instead of continuing violence, she focuses on her own healing. It separates her so clearly from the mob member she is trying to treat with therapy.

The Sopranos was always great at subverting expectations. After the rape, the audience starts to think, “oh this is gonna be like the opening of The Godfather, where someone approaches the mafia in search of underground justice.” But instead, Melfi declines because she knows, in the long run, that it’s right decision. It’s such a realistic, adult response. Whether it’s the mystery of the Russian in “Pine Barrens,” or the whereabouts of Furio, the ambiguity and realism in The Sopranos only lended to the idea that what we were watching was real life.

I think the moment that Melfi says "NO" is one of the most chilling and powerful of the series. She finally draws a line that she won't be corrupted and they forever split. She finally figures out later near the end that he's just been using her to make himself a better crook, but she never takes the easy path like Carm, or Meado, or any of the other women in the show. It's one fantastic ending. And another dry hump fuck you to mob fans. Just like with the pedo - everybody is dying to see some justice Hollywood style but chase won't let it happen.

Ghost Melfi shouldn't had been shocked that Tony was just ''using her'' lol The REASON Tony chose to stick with Melfi is because Melfi herself is more of a underling trying to be a therapist. In OTHER words, her credentials enables her to do her job but her REPUTATION makes her easy to take advantage of. The GUY who counseled Carmela would've been the opposite with Tony like he was with Carm. That's why Tony doesn't seek out guys like him.

One of my favorite episodes ever. The show does such a good job of turning the audience into monsters themselves, wishing for murder and revenge and just wanting to see Dr. Melfi give in to Tony. One of the few if not the only other ending that used a cut to black, used to snatch us away from our vengeful bloodlust as an audience that Tony has made us accustomed to. And, in a way, to keep Tony from infecting her by cutting that part off abruptly. (Just a thought) 💭

@@UFL3 I think it's also a major win for Tony. The fact he *didn't* pry into her life is one of the most touching moments in the show, and indicates that Tony does, in fact, genuinely respect and care for her. How? Because he respected her wishes. He could've gone behind her back, but he didn't.
@Vydio

It actually might be a violation of medical ethics. Everyone is hoping she tells Tony because we all know what Tony would do when he finds out. If the first rule of medicine is do no harm this certainly would do harm.
I always thought that this is the one episode where Tony seems somehow decent. The way he tries to keep Jackie Jr. out of all due to his promise to his friend, the way he talked to Christopher, the way he handled Janice (also the contrast he had to her) and obviously the empathy he shows Dr. Melfi at the end
Years ago, i REALLY wanted Jennifer to tell Tony what happened, but i seriously respect her self-restraint.
I'm surprised you didn't talk about her dream details like the vending machine trapping her and spitting out a noodle.
One of the most powerful episodes in the series; brilliantly written yet difficult to watch. Great job with the review!
This is a tough episode but it's so interesting. It would've been so easy for Melfi to tell Tony but she didn't. I do think it was part personal ethics, part fear of being indebted to him. In their therapy, she plays the dominant role. Yes, Tony can yell and slam doors but she decides whether he gets to sit in that room with her or not. She has power. If she'd used Tony to get justice, she would've lost that power, too.
Powerful episode. One of the favorites. Just me but Melfi NOT telling Tony was the ultimate display of strength. You say dog and that can be right. But Tony's reaction for me was like a child. He wanted so bad to help her, stop her pain but he was helpless. Reminds me of Lyvia comparing kids to dogs. Either way Melfi's ethics are compromised. To feel safe she doesn't pass Tony (and he was ready) onto the behaviorist. So could Tony have been cured? We'll never know.

Thing is her not telling Tony just means that the rapist could do it again. What are the odds that melfi is the first and what are the odds that he will stop when he basically gets away without even a slap on the hand.

A lot of people (usually men) don’t realize what a horrific and violent crime rape actually is. I’m glad that this episode makes so many people uncomfortable.
I believe Melfi did not Tell Tony because, deep inside, she knows Tony and his associates are not that different from the scumbag rapist. I mean, Tony and his associates have done some pretty bad things, I do not think things worse than rape or being involved with rapists is that out of character for them. Melfi knows she will just use evil against evil If she tells Tony. And let's be honest, after everything Tony did in the show, It is Very likely he would use the killing against her in the future, probably by threatning to Tell or by reminding her of the favor he did for her.

You realized that something in a farcical tv show represents reality? Seek help.
Easily the most important decision in the history of the character Dr. Melfi. Very powerful moment, which emphasizes that a tv show can do things a big Hollywood movie can't do. However, I wonder how this guy can work his everyday job without worrying about his victim coming in.... Melfi probably wasn't his first nor last victim... I would think that the perpetrator lives further away from the spot where he committed the crime and works in a factory or even an office. But working in a public service company where hundreds of customers walk in all day and on top of that near the crime scene?
I really dig your videos, great work!
These videos are awesome man keep it up :)
After seeing this episode, it was really hard to shake this episode off when finishing the season.
[SPOILERS] This episode, despite being one of the darkest and most disturbing episodes in the show, is also one of its greatest. The moral decision Melfi has to make is essentially one that puts her and Tony's entire program in jeopardy. If she tells Tony what happened, he will 100% kill the rapist. Not only would this implicate her in a crime and indebt her to Tony, it would (more importantly) be a situation in which Melfi excused Tony's criminal behavior, and in doing so would justify Tony's criminal activity in general. Melfi from the beginning is trying to cure Tony from himself, which also entails him waking up to the evils of mob life, and using Tony's criminal enterprise to seek her own personal justice would remove any sense of moral distance or detachment she has from Tony and his situation. From that point on Melfi would be a hypocrite if she tried to tell Tony that his actions are immoral. Also one of the themes of the show is (i think) determinism vs. free will, nature vs. nurture, and the excuses people make as to why they do the things they do. By the end of the show we are clued to the idea that Tony truly is a psycho/sociopath, and that he only uses therapy as a way to 'sharpen his skills' in manipulation. Tony learns that his mother's treatment of him throughout his life is the cause of much of his mental illness, but instead of using that information to better his life, he uses it as an excuse to keep doing terrible things, maintaining his status as a perpetual victim (the same goes for Janice, and to an extent Carmella). This episode shows that Melfi is the complete opposite of Tony in this regard. She has the opportunity to have her rapist brutally murdered, but she declines. She is a victim, yes, but she also realizes that this doesn't excuse her to order something (almost) equally terrible happen to her assailant. Another thing i find interesting is how a lot of people wanted Melfi to tell Tony, which reminds me of how David Chase said that people were disappointed in the series finale that we don't get to see Tony die. It's kind of like another example of the meta-ness of the show, making a comment about the American tv-watching public and their need to see the bad guys get punished. As I get older I realize that 'poetic justice' is not as innocent as it seems; seeing people get their 'just deserts' in a way justifies their actions, in a way sending the message that its OK to do morally reprehensible things because eventually Karma will get them back and even things out. However that's not how things always work out in the real world. Props to David Chase for giving the people what they need. Anyway another great episode, love your vids, thanks for making them :)
The more reactionary, carnal side of me definitely wanted Melfi to tell him. To make that guy pay for what he did. To see Tony use his position and power to do something that, at least at first consideration, is something more positive than how he usually uses it. But in the end I am glad she didn't. She avoided becoming a motivation for a man to "be better," and retained her own integrity, despite how badly she would have wanted to tell him. She didn't, because that is not who Melfi was as a character, and I just found that so... Well, not satisfying, but certainly a lesser version of that. It would have been cathartic and satisfying to see Tony beat the crap out of that guy, but this way was just better. More consistent to who she was as a character.
7:18 Melfi's hands would've been dirty too and that's something Tony could hold over head
My friend had to warn me that this episode was gonna be heavy. I usually hate warning like that for a show, it's kinda spoilery. But I REALLY appreciated it this time around This episode definitely had a powerful ending, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't hoping the dude would get got in some other episode
One of my all time favorite episodes! So much conflict👏
5:35 As a medical provider, I will add that Melfi knows she would be crossing a huge line in her therapeutic relationship with her patient. Using her patient Tony for his criminal tendencies would be damage him even further and set him back. Although Melfi can be sanctimonious at times, she holds her profession and her professionalism to a high standard. My estimation of Jennifer Melfi as a therapist just skyrocketed.

She did the right thing by not having Tony to kill that guy. She would’ve then been indebted to Tony. And could no longer reject his advances. Because we know good and well Tony would’ve taken advantage of that favor. He would be holding all that cards so he would’ve basically owned her after that.
The last scene of this episode was so powerfull... i remember the first time i watched i was soo impress of Melfis desition
The beauty of Melfi not telling Tony was that any other show would’ve gone there. Chase and his writers show absolute restraint here, and it’s to the benefit of overall realism and Melfi as a character. She never waivers.
This might be my favorite episode, the ending was so powerful the way it cuts to credits with the song choice for the credits
Despite Melfi keeping quiet I kept thinking that Tony would eventually find out what happened to Melfi either by accident or him spying on her again and take matters into his own hands.....without her blessing.

Yes I thought that as well.
Love this series. Great episode. Classic Dave Chase (genius) ending. 👌🏻
Monday’s and Thursday’s it’s Kino time...this is officially a routine now.
I always wish Melphi had told him, but I completely understand that she didn't. Melphi was an awesome character.
If Tony had ever found out about Melfi's rape, it would have been out of her hands, instantly. She knows this. Tony would have been (immediately) non-stop to avenge her pain. He would have done it himself too. She is not a killer, even though she knew she could have had her attacker murdered & of course tortured first. We can only imagine what Tony would have done. That's what separates most of us from these characters in the Sopranos, that have no conscience. She has that thing in her brain & in her heart that tells her right from wrong. They don't....that's what the whole series is about. That's the way I understood this awesome show.

I like to think that Tony would have farmed out the punishment (of the rapist) to Mikey Palmice-maybe throw him off the bridge into the Passaic River (like the drug pusher)? "Ihm gonna give you a break"
I get that she’d potentially be in debt to the mob if Tony avenged her, but she also let a rapist out free to harm other women by withholding that info to Tony. That’s got to hurt her psyche too. Real polarizing and ugly ending that I can’t decide if it’s genius or a cop-out, but I was in awe either way.
One of the best of the series. Incredible.
Just looking back through the recent videos, Mr. Rugerio's Neighborhood is definitely the most viewed video. Thumbnail game is ON POINT, Kino!
Such a great episode
I have to say, As soon as you said the title i said "Oh here we go" very heavy.
Thanks for the vid. Hard episode but good 1.
Oh boy I was dreading this episode, I love your series and I love Melfi, so seeing her get assaulted like this kills me inside.
can you do these episode breakdowns but for the show entourage?
Interesting I think that one of the subtexts of the episode is the fact that the mafia was actually created based upon of rape situation and I think that it also plays up to the fact that in the United States a lot of Italian immigrants went to the mafia to get Justice in certain circumstances when the law didn't help them.
With all 6 infinity stones, I will snap that man into atoms.
She keeps having problems with Italians named Rossi. First when she was married to Henry, now when she is married to Richard
She didn't get justice and turned down vengeance. That "No" at the end is so powerful
“No” One of the most powerful moments in the entire series
This is such an underrated episode
I always wondered what would have happened if Tony had discovered that Christopher had got drugs for Meadow? I was waiting for him to find out and see what the repercussions would be....it was never mentioned again though.
i think ultimately, melfi wants justice, but wants her morals more. she wanted him killed, but couldnt bring herself to have it done. if you watch that 40 second interaction of tony trying to figure out whats wrong, shes silently screaming with her eyes. her actress played her role to perfection.
I've watched the entire series at least 6 times but the rape scene is the one part I cannot rewatch. I can even watch Silvio whack Adriana but I can't watch this again.
I feel like this right here was one of the better episodes cuz it really showed us Melfis character
The source of the title is, melfi walks into a deli by her office and sees her attackers picture on the wall titled, "employee of the month".
Of all the people that should have been killed but weren’t, the employee of the month and coach hauser were right up there
I remember how very disturbed I felt watching that episode with what happened to Melfi
Yes I did subscribe, thank-you very much.
This episode and whitecaps are the pinnacle of TV. Nothing else comes close.
I watched this episode live with my father, brother and fathers friend and after the rape scene my dad turned the channel for a second because he felt weird watching this with his kids. After the show he said I can’t believe that is allowed on television. I remember it vividly
