Holy crap, you’re the BlitzSonic guy! I don’t know if you remember this, but you taught at a summer camp I went to once and showed off the engine in Hyrule Field, I’m in my final year of college for 3D Animation now in no small part to having taught myself how to make custom animations and levels for BlitzSonic after that experience. Weird place to say this, but thanks for that. Hope you’re doing well. You’re one of the reasons I’ve been a Sonic fan for life, and I hope you’re still out there doing amazing stuff.

There still isnt a vetter boost fangame than this and everytime i ask someone to name one, they cant. The only thing wrong with omens is it had gIitches like quite literally every other sonic game to ever exist. The levels were exilerating and fast paced like most boost games and the cutscenes, voice acting and music were just nice extras. Seperate art from the artist. Idc how controversial a person is. If they make good stuff then its good stuff and omens is good for a fangame.

I see this game as a necessary evil. We needed something as bad as this to humble everyone a bit, because i can't stand how every fangame concept is INSTANTLY praised like the second coming of Christ, even when it's clearly unfinished.

Is he a fan though, because if your a fan shouldn’t you respect sonic and know that he shouldn’t make money of it. And you can say that there’s references but that doesn’t mean your a fan it just means you’ve seen chips wristband online and thought oh let’s add this. The engine alone excels this dumpster fire of a game into being pretty decent in the rare times when you're blocking out the story and the level designers weren't cracked out of their minds when making the game.

It was basically made to be keyboard+mouse controls, playing on gamepad got me rage quitted too many times...

It's extraordinarily tone-deaf and weird how they made the decision to have Metarex in the game, but choose to include Chris in the script over Cosmo or anyone that'd actually give the addition of those story elements actual weight. Like why is it Chris and the Metarex over Cosmo and the Metarex?

Because cosmo is fucking dead and Chris exists in the same dimension as the Exiled. Also because Sonic losing Chris is parallel to Exiled losing his home, which give the dramatic weight to the conflict. Which is why Chip's bracelet is prominent, cause to save the world sonic must lose something of his dear friend yet again. The game is about moving forward, Exiled is about moving back to the past. The thing that pisses me off the most about Sonic Omens is that it completely stole the attention from an actually GOOD Sonic Fangame: Sonic Triple Trouble 16 bit(A really high quality remake of one of the Game Gear sonic games!) The highest viewed video I could find for TT16 had only around 170k views, meanwhile the highest I could find for Omens was over DOUBLE that.

Most people kinda just bundle my work with the original Infinity Engine and my team gets caught up in the ripple effects of negativity. Thank you very much for putting in that extra effort. I'm very glad you made basically an "ultimate video" describing everything to know about, not just the document, but the controversy in general. It's important for more people to know about this kinda stuff, especially people who don't wanna read through those 25 pages. I know this is quite late; but that “Bard Taell” pilot is ALSO plagiarized. A former artist (not from Omens) spoke out about how the team would call their loyal fans “Mindless Hamsters” behind their back, and mentioned how their original projects was stolen from a web comic who’s creator ‘conveniently’ was booted from the group after criticizing the leadership. Using the same engine as someone else is fine as long as the engine and the game's content is actually good. Not the case for this specific game (or engine imo) though.

I loved when Sonic said “It’s Omens time.” Sonic Omens is the most fan game that I have never played and never will play.

In a weird way this actually makes me more hopeful for Frontiers. The Omens creators tried to posit their game like the future of Sonic, like the idea that there hasn’t been a good Sonic game since 1998, and failed in spectacular fashion. Whatever Frontiers throws at us, I have a hard time thinking it will be as rough, nonsensical or confusing as the choices made in Omens.

@@tomboy_kisser I’m not saying Frontiers will be a 10/10 masterpiece. But given how badly Omens is designed I really REALLY doubt Frontiers would be on that level. Literally Sonic 06’s levels are better laid out. We definitely don’t have plane levels that take 15 minutes with no sense of direction or pace, for instance.

Not gonna lie, these creators really remind me of the author of the original Sonic.exe story, who had a very similar reaction when it was taken down.

Don’t forget the classic “Get good” excuse! Like, I’m all for some good difficulty in a game, but the issues with Omen’s controls are on the fact that the engine wasn’t finished. Had they at least used the Infinity Engine + version that fixes some of Omen’s problems, the excuse would hold water.

5:07 The whole thing with that scene becomes even funnier when you consider they got it right for the trailer but screwed it up for the actual final game! Maybe if they spent a little less time harassing people online, and focusing on their game, they wouldn't have missed that. The whole thing with Omens with them stealing the character models from Sega's games, taking someone else's game engine and trying to pass it off as their own, all while trying to profit from it, really does remind a lot of Ian Malcom's monologue from Jurassic Park Ian Malcolm: If I may, if I may. Uh, I'll tell you the problem with the scientific power that you're, that you're using here. It didn't require any discipline to attain it. You know, you read what others had done, and you, and you took the next step. You didn't earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don't take any responsibility... for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses, uh, to accomplish something as fast as you could, and before you even knew it, you had, you've patented it, and packaged it, and slapped it on a plastic lunch box, and now (bangs the table) you're selling it, you wanna sell it, well. Also, why is Shadow working with the Metarex? It makes no sense what so ever, because 1. Why would Shadow want to go back to the past to be with Maria? He's let go and moved on. 2. Why would Shadow help the Metarex when in order to get what he wants? It would end up dooming the planet, which totally goes against the promise he made to her. 3. Why would Shadow help the Metarex in the first place!? The Metarex saga happened in the Omens' universe. Did he just forget they were the bad guys? Same story for Chris, which makes it seem more like "character acts stupid so to let the plot happen." Plus there's the thing with Sonic still being able to go Super - despite the Chaos Emeralds being completely destroyed - it makes you wonder, do these devs/writers even know the series!?

Humphrey, Jason Griffith or Kōji Yusa - but instead more like a cheap Russian bootleg. Hell he makes even Kirk Thornton, with his bad Vegeta parody voice, sound good by comparison!

This game straight up has the 2010 story problem. where the characters are just standing around doing nothing and only leave it up to Sonic. Some of the characters don't even have no reason to be here like Knuckles, Vector, Rouge and Amy. At least tails is likable in this

This makes 06 look like an absolute masterpiece.

sonic team, an entire game studio, shouldn't be praised for mediocrity. the praise for indie developers is a little more understandable as they are singular developers/very small teams most of the time and it definitely should not be held up to the standards a full sonic team game should have. that being said, most sonic fan games should not be praised as much as they are now. they're not really all that great lol

Spark The Electric Jester is a great series for those into Sonic. They're fast and fluid platformers, with the first game being 2D 16 bit, while 2 and 3 are more so modeled after the 3D games. The third game only recently released, and it's gotten really good reviews so far. Freedom Planet is also great, though I do feel its story cutscenes do go on for a bit too long. If you're in need of more 2D high speed action though, it's a great choice.

I don't care if it's an indie game, a AAA game, or a fangame: You, your team, and your game should have good qualities. The game should have a balance between gameplay, visuals, and story (while at times having them shine individually or together), and your game should be made out of love, not spite. And you also should credit your sources and not profit off of an existing IP. It's wrong, it's plagiarism, and it's a lawsuit waiting to happen. But this game is necessary evil to shut the imbecilic, drooling mouths of the people who say, "SEGA should hire this person," for the sake of good graphics. If you want someone talented to be hired by SEGA, they'll do it themselves, and they will be in charge of their own projects (if they wish), like Christian Whitehead. Shoutout to anyone who says that we shouldn't compare fangames to AAA, no matter how bad the game or their devs are. Imagine comparing this to Cyberpunk.

@@vazazell5967 I'll give you cutscenes and visuals. Gameplay and level design is where we deviate. There is a balance between manual control and automation. Forces suffered because of too much automation, not letting the player have a chance to traverse and move. Omens suffers from too much manual control, requiring you to hit an ememy or jump on a spring at the exact direction its located. Otherwise, you fail and fall (plus the control mapping isn't very good). Also, one level could alternate between adventure and boost style. You're dashing through Area 99 in one moment, and BOOM!!! Obstacles everywhere! And give Sonic and the Black Knight a break. It was made on the goshdarn Wii, which doesn't have very good processors. It's a goshdarn Sonic game where you need to move with the Wii remote. I have no hatred for fangames, but this is one of them (and The Return to Freddy's). This game was made out of spite, and it shows.

I think what sucks about Omens is that underneath all the jank, ridiculousness, spite, and toxicity, I genuinely see the seeds of what could have been a pretty good game. The infinity engine is technically sound, the team just only needed to reel back their ego and actually try to learn from their mistakes so that they could make a better product.

The funny thing is there has been a push for that at the very least since Project Hero came out but for some reason people think so little of Mainline Sonic games that they believe anything made by fans must automatically be of better quality. It's a weird mindset to have but hopefully the landscape will start to change now.

Sonic as a series has a good few mediocre to bad titles, particularly in the last decade but even with that in mind, most fan projects don't come close to understanding the fullness of what making a game never mind a Sonic game entails. I don't like Forces too much even though I can enjoy it on its own merits but I would never for a second think that Omens or any other project by fans has eclipsed its production value or figured out Sonic somehow. The most I will give Omens is that it's fully 3D and the actual character movement is really well done for something that hasn't been refined since it was initially shown off back when Obān was around. That said, Frontiers has been more than a little tough around the edges since it's early unveiling a couple months ago and as a result the rhetoric of fans can do it better has increased about tenfold. I still have high hopes for the game, moreso now since seeing the Japanese TV Spot but I also recognise that if Sonic Team don't deliver after this near perfect Storm that is the Omens project, we're going to be suffering this same issue for some time to come.

The truth is that in games and other creative media, 'no project is ever finished it just gets released'. Deadlines are an important end to that cycle so that we have an incentive to make choices and improve our pipelines to make the best possible project within the time allowed.

Much like Sonic Omens, it's creator made it entirely out of spite, most of the cast was filled with either racists or pedophiles, the script was written by an inexperienced 15yo, and it also received a lot of hate when it released. In a sense i guess the best thing to come out of Omens is like you said, being a cautionary tale about how not to make a fangame. The Sonic fangame community is in my opinion one of the most inspiring and talented out there so to see some asshole trying to use it for nothing but money sorta helps show any upcoming developers what they shouldn’t do and especially how to not interact with the fanbase

I have some things to say. 1. “Consider this your bad omen!” Has to be the single worst thing I’ve ever heard come out of Sonic’s mouth, and in a fangame no less. I’ve heard far less cringey lines in the official games. 2. Weight of the World is like… it’s awesome for a final boss(as tedious and bullshit as it is), but it doesn’t compare to Fly With Me at all.

Despite all the BS about Sonic Omens, I'd be lying if I were to say the presentation (mainly the cutscenes) of the game is bad. This is the direction I want for future official Sonic games. Things like Tails flying Sonic again, more animated expressions when characters talk, cooler dynamic scenes like at when Shadow rode on his bike & shot robos with his chaos spears or even at this part 10:23. Not to mention, it's refreshing seeing the game's graphics/visuals being ran on a different engine opposed to 10+ years of seeing official Sonic games being ran on the hedgehog engine since Unleashed. If everything was properly polished, it definitely would've been a fantastic fan game. Hate that something with such great potential was created in the hands of a collective of trash, toxic people.

The graphics are only good because it was made in the Infinity engine, which itself was made in Unreal, which is pretty known for its realistic-like graphics. This is just basic Unreal lighting. Of course they look good.

When I looked at the cutscenes in isolation, it showed some level of promise, however it *was* disturbingly short for the scale the game was attempting to take (and absolutely fanfic-y but I had an easier time getting past that since other than that game I was coming off SEGA's pretty risk-free official modern Sonic games such as Colors and Forces). I knew the game was controversial for some reason, but back then I saw how many nods there were and thought "oh they must like the series since they're using plenty of things from it", with most of these nods (minus Chris) being pretty frontloaded in the first few episodes... and then either not there or gravely misused in the latter ones (SONIC WHY DID YOU BREAK CHIP'S RING WHAT DID IT DO). However, it's clear they were in the wrong mindset from the getgo. Not only did they try to profit off an IP they don't own (which is already making it clear that if not everything is going to the game itself then they're just making it for profit), but "we finished the game out of spite" is all you need to know to call this a massive waste, with the sexualization of Maria being the nastiest cherry on top I've ever seen. Things could've been so different if just three factors were different: if the whole team wasn't thin-skinned af and actually listened to criticism and improved on it thus leading the project with passion and NOT spite, if the creator didn't monetize it and instead spent his FREE time on it... and most importantly, if the modeller realized their "funny" joke was too out of context (doesn't matter if all the girls in your locker rooms wore that, Maria likely never even knew what a locker room was!) and straightup didn't add it at all knowing it'd just come across as indecent. As is, it's a massive waste of ressources that was rushed for the wrong reasons. If you don't love your game, don't make them.

Well to be fair rule 34 is that there will always be someone who jacks off to something, although the Maria Joke was in terrible taste. Most will find it gross to take someone so sweet & innocent & then give them grunge underwear like that. If someone defiled Cream that way I would be beyond pissed.

I'll always be annoyed with people just giving fan game creators heaps of praise just for making something slightly competent. Just because it didn't come from a big company and looks nice doesn't make it an instant masterpiece

Likewise. Sonic fans started doing that stuff ever since Sonic Mania. The idea that Sonic mania (which was amazing btw) was made by fans has gave the fanbase a bit of a big head. Never mind the fact that most fan games is actually far worst then than the current batch of most official Sonic games. Fans forget that sturgeon's law is a major thing among fan created content. Only the small 10% of fan creations are great while the other larger 90% is trash.

@@brawler5760 People look at any random mod of Green Hill in 3D or porting X stage into Y game, then lose their shit with the "SEGA, HIRE THIS MAN!!!" mob mentality. That is not how the game industry works.

@@brawler5760 Exactly! That's what a lot of these fans forget! And most fans can't do what the Sonic mania devs can do! I've always noticed that when it comes to most Sonic fangames, most stage designs of those games are crappy, boring, and shoddy recreations of past stages from older Sonic games.

All jokes aside, "Consider this your bad omen" is one of the worst lines I've ever heard. It's like "it's morbin' time", they wanted to include the title somehow but it comes off as forced, lazy, and just cringe. ☠️

The only official game I think did something similar was Sonic Heroes, but even that wasn't as bad as this, imagine if Sonic said "It's time to go unleashed" 💀

@@brawler5760 Thats the point. It's morbin' time is a meme for a reason. Its meant to parody and hyperbolize Morbius' quality as a movie. The point of the comment was to point out that the script for this fangame is about as bad as it gets.

@@ayrtonjoga It was fine in Heroes because the entire game had cheesy dialogue like that, it didn't feel out of place or anything at the end. That "bad omen" line however really does just feel forced.

I played the initial two releases. Before the game was completed. Back then, I had frustrations, but felt the game showed promise. I liked how they implemented Shadow’s Chaos powers, I liked how Chip’s bracelet was applied in both the story and gameplay. And just like Splash, I loved how they designed the opening level. I thought the game would improve as development progressed. Maybe iron out the flaws in the level design, fix the tornado controls, recast Shadow with someone who can actually sound like him. Had I known about the drama going on behind the scenes, I would’ve backed away and deleted the whole thing from my computer. My only consolation, is I saw this before I downloaded the completed game. It’s like the story opens with the promise of being good, and then suddenly, “Fooled you! This is a crappy Sonic X fanfic!”

Splash Dash is my favorite SonicTuber, so it's always good to see him post a video.

What makes a good game? 1. It's gotta be fun. 2. Not have too many glitches that'll ruin the fun. 3. Have a reason to play it again. 4. No make profit out of people if it's a fan game. 5. If you're hiring voice actors, they better be good. 6. Let them get a new mic. 7. Don't replace them. 8. Don't be a D. 9. Don't hire creeps. 10. Don't have them hide content that proves they are a creep. 11. Don't hate on people if they don't like your game. 12. Make Sonic Omens.

I get that something's fishy with behind the scenes over this fangame, but this is just plain ridiculous. If anything, this makes me even more excited for Sonic Frontiers, even if the end product may not be great as we hoped it would be.

This and fallout frontier go to show we've let modders' heads get too big. They all heard the meme of "they fix the games FOR the companies!" And now they think they walk on water and deserve to be rich, instead of just being passionate people doing passion projects.

The good thing is that we still have SAGE, so we know where the most of the good fangames are.

One level from old assets, and that level is green hill half the time. And level design is nothing. Fan game engines were a mistake, now everyone who doesn't have what it takes to make a fangame still tries anyway and shits their demo out at SAGE. Or even worse, instead of going for release like Omens did, the devs are stuck polishing one level for eternity like Sonic XG. Something good being on SAGE is an exception to the rule.

I remember I saw a post (unfortunately I forgot from who and where) that said something along the lines of “we really had a sonic forces and sonic mania situation into fan games with omens and triple trouble 16-bit” and that was a shocker

I love how Sonic sounds like he's trying (and failing) to do an English Junichi Kanemaru impression with a poor "roll credits" quip.

I remember people saying like "wow some 3d sonic game better than sonic team games!". Well, played a bit and i got frustrated with tails ship gameplay. After sometime, there was that thing with sega giving a copyright strike on the project, and seeing all the investiment from weird cg animation studios... Like... really strange. It was not a surprise to discover that sonic omens is not really a "good game".

This writing of Shadow comes off a someone who thought Shadow the Hedgehog was good. Seriously if you want good writing of Team Dark look up Ian Flynn's work.

We laugh AT Shadow in his game for a good reason. Also the Jojo reference was fucking stupid.

I actually still think the game itself is decent. The controls were actually tweaked. That being said, the devs have NO EXCUSE for behaving that way and the fact they made it out of spite sours the whole thing.
