Iron Maiden's bassist, Steve Harris, is a monster. He's the main reason a lot of maiden songs have that galloping sound.

Great song. As always Maiden tells a tale - a story based in historical context. This one is about an Egyptian pharaoh who dies and is mummified. Song takes the listener along a tortured existence and death and onto the afterlife. Maiden are masterful storytellers as well as some of the most talented musicians ever to walk the globe. Super album is Powerslave. Definitely listen to Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner. You can pick out the great musicianship from the lead guitars harmonizing, to the gallop rhythm of the bass guitar to the thumping drum fills from Nicko and punctuated by the air raid siren vocals of Dickenson. Maiden are unstoppable!

I think it's more along the lines of a pharaoh, on his deathbed, realizes he is indeed mortal and will die. Even as he's been told that he's a living god and has the power of life and death, he's still a prisoner to death like a commoner. Once he dies, he's forced to haunt a stone statue of himself, impotent and unable to interact with life. He's bitter and angry at the lie he was told when he ascended the throne.

There is someone if you're interested, it's a guy who did a full album reaction. Don't remember his name though, James something I think. Personally, I think the songs that destroys everything else in the album is The Duellists. And it's fairly unknown too. Even though Powerslave is a very famous album, most people only know the "big hits". Aces High, 2 Minutes, Powerslave and Rime. Which is a shame since I think it's Maiden's most consistent album but half of the songs get overlooked.
Great review and commentary. I enjoyed it and your reactions/review. Been a Maiden fan since 1982 myself. Good job!

I was at long beach arena the Friday night they filmed Live After Death with my Eddie shirt with the queen Mary and Vincent Thomas bridge on it. I left that concert a changed kid. It was like seeing magic and feeling the power of the music resonating with the core of my being. Watching your reaction and your thinking behind what you observed brought it out to me in a song I have been listening to for 33 years!!! After you mentioned how you were seeing it/hearing it, I really payed attention to the emotion that came across in the series of ups and downs throughout the guitar/bass solo's and I am seeing this song on a new level!!!! It seemed to me as if it went from the sad emotion that you mentioned (that got me thinking) and then went on to like a "angry/rebellious feel" and then some more deep emotion and back to like a "Eff you death"!! kind of thing by the end of the solo(s)... Loved it Preston! Some awesome insights you made there, made me think, and I've loved the song for years. Made me think about our denial of mortality and setting it in ancient Egypt where the Pharaoh was believed to be part man and part God kinda sums up our own feelings. We don't expect a bad medical result or anything, we're thinking, "Not me! No way, you must have the wrong guy. I don't think you understand, I'm invincible!" Then making it literal and like Iron Maiden does, injecting fun and a slightly campy/creepy vibe into it too. And I Love how clear that bass is, playing high notes in the solos... Hold on Bruhhhhhhhhh! :) (And of course the drums and Bruce kicking it out of the park!)
That's so crazy this dude points out the solo in powerslave. Was just listening to it coming home from work yesterday and the Baseline during the Solo makes every hair on my arms stand up.
