The Solar Window Of Opportunity: Joe Jordan at TEDxSantaCruz

Joe Jordan worked at NASA Ames Research Center and the SETI Institute for more than 20 years, serving on various projects, including flying observatories for infrared astronomy, Hubble Space Telescope design, studies of stratospheric ozone depletion and global climate change, the search for planets around distant stars, image analysis from the first Mars rover, and investigations of Saturn's rings and the atmosphere of its moon Titan. In the last few years he's been teaching renewable energy at Cabrillo College and San Jose State University. He leads "physics-in-nature" hikes and astronomy/stargazing evenings for various organizations or events in this area and elsewhere. He's on the Board of Directors of Ecology Action, and long ago helped steer them in the direction of their now primary work on modernizing energy infrastructure. He originated the very first public-facility solar-energy projects in Santa Cruz, including the large-scale deployment of solar-energy systems on several of our schools. Sky-power to the people!
This TEDxSantaCruz talk is part of over 2 dozen surrounding our theme of "Engage!" This inaugural TEDxSantaCruz event was held June 11, 2011 at the Cabrillo College Music Recital Hall in Aptos, CA (Santa Cruz County). www.tedxsantacruz.org/

if we move away from fossil fuels to solar (and other alternate) energy, it can also bring an end to war and strife. The rich nations wont be running after the oil and trying to dominate over foreign lands. It will also make each one of us self sufficient and bring greater love and happiness in the world. Wonderful presentation Joe. Let the sun reign, and bring us more brightness and joy as it has for millions of years.

Great talk! For future innovations with regards to solar space travel, which might I add is going to be one of the best ways for humanity to extend its travels away from our solar system as our star passes through its red giant phase. Fossil fuels and even land based renewable energy technologies will be far to inefficient and impractical if we are to become a space fairing race. This is the best area of focus for humanity in the long run, Space X's mission to Mars will be key initially, also it will reduce the potential for extinction from various factors as two planets are better than one. I am sure it is possible for humanity to locate and settle on further planetary bodies in the next billion years!

*Thorium Molten Salt Reactors* and Nuclear fusion need help from innovators like Joe Jordan. Solar Energy has limitations: *Dilute : need large area* * *Seasonal variations - Need fossil power backup* * *Intermittent on hourly basis - need battery/pumped hydro backup* * *Location specific*

The USA has states bigger than Germany and I don’t think Germany’s solor energy is a raving success. Bottom line- there are currently no affordable solor set ups. The ones that work the best won’t last long enough to be worth it. Storing solor in water is the best you can do.

Did he say his solution is to get involved politically to make the "dark" fuels more expensive so that the extreme cost of solar is not a hurdle? What type of solar power plant is he suggesting we use? Solar is not cheap and will not be cost effective enough in the foreseeable future. Thorium still seems like the better solution.

+Payton Hatch , I didn't like the talk, either, but the statistics you can find here: cleantechnica.com/2015/02/25/solar-pv-will-cheapest-form-power-within-decade/ , here: www.iea.org/Textbase/npsum/ElecCost2015SUM.pdf and in many other places on the Internet show that PV (Photovoltaics , i.e. solar energy) is coming down in price rapidly - faster than any other form of energy (ca. 50% in the last 3 years). Today (late Q3, early Q4/2015), PV is already the cheapest source of energy for about 5-10% of the Earth's population. This number will go up to 30-40% within less than 5 years. Why would you say that "Solar is not cheap and will not be cost effective enough in the foreseeable future." ? If you take all direct and indirect subsidies out of the picture, solar PV looks even better by comparison. I don't mind LFTRs (liquid fluoride thorium reactors) - even though I live close to Fukushima (Japan, where a nuclear power plant was damaged by a Tsunami), because I believe we need a mix of energy sources. But I disagree with your statement. Side note: I presume that small islands and outback towns in Australia/US/Canada/Brazil/... will most likely have an easier time installing PV than a fission reactor.

  • @vincentrobinette1507

@@jeffbailey8333 That's absolutely right. Solar is 1/5 the cost per installed watt than just 20 years ago. 1/10, the cost of 30 years ago. Now, we need cost effective efficient grid scale electrical energy storage. Batteries are a great idea, but very expensive, and there may not be enough materials to make enough batteries, for renewable energy to become 100% of our electricity. No one technology can get it done: We need them all. Nothing's off the table.

Tony Clough I didn't hear one idea to be spread in this talk, only a bunch of the sun is a great energy source. well duh! but how can you tap that resource enough to compete with simple, cheap, low tech sources like coal and gas? I have some great ideas, but the problem is it's going to need cheap power and industry to produce. Makes it difficult for third world Nations to use renuables don't it.

Sorry your math is wrong. If you paid $622,500 for a 622.5 kW solar electric system, it would only need to be on at full power one hour a month to meet your bill. Many areas get an average of at least 4hrs of full sun per day. You'd only need to spend $5200 on a 5.2kW system to meet your needs (5.2kW * 4hrs/day * 30 days/mo = 624 kWh). However, installation rates are at least twice that, so you'd spend ~$10400 - $13000. That system would put out good power (slowly declining) for 30 years or more with a little maintenance.
