One of my favorite ships! I first learned about her through her fictional sister, the SS Antonia Graza from the 2002 movie Ghost Ship. When I was 10, I used to think the Antonia Graza was real, and dreamed of finding her and restoring her to make her my personal family ocean liner. When I found out about the Andrea Doria, I felt very sad that she can't be raised and restored.😪 I won't be missing this premiere.

  • @natehill8069

Stockholm was an icebreaker - reinforced bow and keel. So her strongest part hit the Doria's "softest" spot. Actually, since the weather was calm, if they had kept her at bare steerageway ahead she could have kept the hole plugged and maybe they could have saved the Doria also. Like not pulling a nail out of a tire til you get to a service location.

It was the same thing with the sinking of the Empress of Ireland in 1914. She was travelling through heavy fog when the Storstad, which had a reinforced bow like the Stockholm, hit and sliced a massive hole through the side of the Empress. The Empress of Ireland went down a lot faster than the Andrea Doria. The Empress went down in fourteen minutes and 1,012 of the 1,477 people onboard died. Storstad remained afloat but with a twisted bow and there were no fatalities on her Oh. And the captain of the Storstad did try to keep the bow of the Storstad in the hole but the current of the St. Lawrence river made it difficult to keep the ships together.

I grew up on the Westside of Manhattan, many of my uncles and friends Dads were Longshoremen. I was very familiar with the shipping lines and their ocean liners. My Dad would take my brother and my sister and myself and walk along the piers on the Westside. As children were impressed with the size of all the great passenger liners at their piers. My Uncle Pat worked for the Swedish Line as a Longshoremen. When the Stockholm returned to New York with survivors from the Andria Dora, my Dad took my brother and I to watch the Doria dock. I can still see the image of the crushed bow of the Stockholm, as the ship approauched the pier. All the passengers on deck rushed to the pier side of the Stockholm, as a result of people rushing to one side of the ship. The Stockholm listed towards the pier, there was a HUGE GASP from the crowd on the street and pier. People thought they were going to witness another tragic event with the capsizing of the Stockholm at its birth. Fortunately the Stockholm was able to handle the rush of people on the deck. I was 6 years old when that happened and I can still see the Stockholm in my mind from that day. Just an FYI.

5:34 :"When she arrived (ile de France) it was almost nightfall, so she turned on her lights." An erroneous statement. The collision occured about 11:10PM; The Ile De France had already passed and the Captain Beaudean turned around and steamed straight for the accident, arriving in the middle of the night, and then turned on her lights. Brand new book out on this tragedy, "The Last Voyage of the Andrea Doria" by Greg King and Penny Wilson.

By the time of the sinking, all of the starboard lifeboats were already gone. This video shows them intact. I know it's just a small detail, but it's a fact. Also, as it sank, the Andrea Doria was slightly stern up. In fact, the last part of the ship that was visible was the port-side screw. The ship did not ease beneath the water in a uniform manner. It was slightly bow down at the end. But good video.

The first lifeboats to reach SS Stockholm carried white jacketed stewards from the Andrea Doria who fled the latter before the passengers they were serving were able to escape in the lifeboats that remained.

Île-de-France Capt. On her arrival: "Well look at this! Looks like we made it just in the nick of time! What does that make us?" Île-de-France XO: "Big damn heroes Sir." Île-de-France Capt: "Ain't we just." For context... this wasn't the only time Île-de-France had been involved in such a rescue. When she arrived she had every light possible on, her horn blaring, and her arrival was such a sight to behold everyone involved knew that anyone alive in that moment was going to survive. The most interesting part, is that she willingly held back many of her own boats during the rescue for the safety of her own passengers and crew... and still got everyone off of the Doria.

Great video BSL! But I noticed some things that differ from how it actually happened: First of all, the collision was late in the night (11:10 pm); the Ille de France arrived at the scene some hours later, in the early morning, not the early evening; and finally, the Andrea Doria sank bow first, not all as a whole. But, as I said, great video anyway. I love that ship and its story. RIP all the 51 people who died in the disaster 🙏🏼

The survivors were very lucky that the ship didn't sink more rapidly and that the Ille de France among others were able to respond. Hundreds of lives were spared, this could have easily been another Empress of Ireland or even Titanic level disaster. Thankfully, it wasn't THAT tragic.

Your ship model are, in general, very good. The collision happened at 11:20pm at night. Stockholm was entering fog, Andrea Doria was in the thick of it.. Ile De France arrived in the morning, while it was still dark. Doria's right side lifeboats were all launched, port side were trapped in place. The doomed liner had a massive hole under the starboard bridge wing and immediately assumed an 18 degree list which increased in fits and starts. When she finally went over, her bow descended to the sea bed first, and hit the ocean floor before her stern was evacuated of air. I've written a book about the collision and wreckage, so I know from whence I write. Your graphics are good, but the sequences are not in correct order or incomplete. I applaud your skill in attempting to develop this. Stockholm eventually received a new hull design and was just retired this year.

I was reading a book long time ago which unfortunately I can’t remember name but shortly after the collision, one of the poor crewmen of the Stockholm got wrapped up by one of the anchor chains and was dragged under to his death; don’t think his body was recovered. Another survivor of the Doria saw a woman passenger stumbling out of the wreckage and clearly mortally wounded (just mentioned side/stomach was torn open), and fell overboard out of the impact hole.

Here as a Tomb Raider 2 fan, researching the Andrea Doria, the ship the Maria Doria was based on ☺️ Your video is amazing, informative, the music used sounds epic and really made me feel anxious for the events about to follow.. Genius work. 👏🏻 3.40-4.10 the last part of the second tune used, in the background, on a completely unrelated note.. Please can someone else confirm that I wasn't the only one that can slightly hear BMTH's Tell Slater solo from 2.53-3.30 🤔 Just me? 😅
