    I think the problem is with no survivors and no definite account of what caused her to sink or the events leading up to that moment, it would be difficult to create a movie out of it. At least one that wasn't pure Hollywood fiction.

  • @bbfissingle1715

    @bbfissingle1715

    @@SirCraigius What about The Perfect Strorm? That is almost 100% Hollywood fiction! Also, we do have a pretty solid idea about the mechanics of the Fitzgerald's final plunge by just looking at the wreak. It obviously took a nosedive, the bow struck the bottom leaving the stern suspended (the lake in that area is shallower than the ship's length), and then the stern fishtailed and capsized. It's not HOW the ship sank that's the mystery, but what caused the ship to flood in the first place. I think a movie could work if it is shown through the first person perspective of the crew, who were apparently just as oblivious as we are to the cause of the ship's flooding and ultimately would have experienced the ship's catastrophic plunge as we see it had occurred.

My father told me Fitz was also nicknamed 'Titanic of the Lakes'. This was the early '70s. I said calling it Titanic was a bad idea. Pretty bad shock when it went down.

    Yep. Ships from Fitzgerald’s era and older still sail. The oldest ship on the lakes is the Lee A. Tregurtha, formerly the USS Chiwawa and built in 1942. It still carries its WWII service ribbons. As well, two straight-decked ships (same design as Fitz) still exist: the SS Alpena from 1943, and the Edward L. Ryerson, built in 1960 and a very similar ship to Fitzgerald to the point they carried the same configuration of horns, meaning they sounded identical. It’s also very famous in the area, various good recordings of them blowing the horn exist.

    The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down Of the big lake they called Gitche Gumee The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead When the skies of November turn gloomy With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed When the gales of November came early The ship was the pride of the American side Coming back from some mill in Wisconsin As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most With a crew and good captain well seasoned Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms When they left fully loaded for Cleveland And later that night when the ship's bell rang Could it be the north wind they'd been feelin'? The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound And a wave broke over the railing And every man knew, as the captain did too T'was the witch of November come stealin' The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait When the gales of November came slashin' When afternoon came it was freezin' rain In the face of a hurricane west wind When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck sayin' "Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya" At seven PM, a main hatchway caved in, he said "Fellas, it's been good to know ya" The captain wired in he had water comin' in And the good ship and crew was in peril And later that night when his lights went outta sight Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald Does any one know where the love of God goes When the waves turn the minutes to hours? The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay If they'd put fifteen more miles behind her They might have split up or they might have capsized They may have broke deep and took water And all that remains is the faces and the names Of the wives and the sons and the daughters Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings In the rooms of her ice-water mansion Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams The islands and bays are for sportsmen And farther below Lake Ontario Takes in what Lake Erie can send her And the iron boats go as the mariners all know With the gales of November remembered In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed In the maritime sailors' cathedral The church bell chimed 'til it rang twenty-nine times For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down Of the big lake they called Gitche Gumee Superior, they said, never gives up her dead When the gales of November come early

    The most plausible theory i've gone with takes into account Captain Cooper's interview along with radio transmissions. I believe the Edmund Fitzgerald likely hit at Six Fathom Shoal and began taking on water from there. As the Fitz slowly took on water and started to list, the ship would have began to sit lower and lower in the water. Captain Cooper talks about how the Anderson was hit stern to bow by 2 massive waves (known as the Three Sisters on the Great Lakes) and these big waves were headed in the direction of the Fitzgerald. Now, take into account the Edmund Fitzgerald sitting lower in the water and being hit by a Three Sisters phenomena, it would make sense that the Edmund Fitzgerald was driven nose first into the lakebed. The sailors on the Edmund Fitzgerald likely never had a second to comprehend what was happening.

  • @paulthomas1089

    @paulthomas1089

    I agree, although I'm not sure about them hitting Six Fathom Shoal, it is a possibility, I do believe the evidence shows that they were taking on water and thus sitting lower in the water. There could have been other reasons for them taking on water like loose hatch covers. I do believe it's a fact that the bow nose dived, driven with force, into the lake bed, causing the ship to break in half. It happened so fast the poor souls on board had no time to react, I pray they are all with the Lord.

    I think it was sudden and catastrophic. The ship just disappeared completely. If those waves were that big, they had to have rolled up the deck, causing a severe list. The water stays up in the forward cabin and put the bow down underwater. Once it started down, the screw just drove the whole thing into the bottom, breaking the ship deep and causing the stern to roll almost completely over while simultaneously sinking.

    She may have "bottomed out" also. For those that want to understand what this means it's when a longer vessel's bow and stern are each atop of a large wave but amidships is out of the water not being supported by anything. The vessel breaks into two pieces under its own weight. Only takes a moment for the amidships to get into a situation like this. It forms a bridge from wave to wave but isn't designed to be a bridge.

    3:44 Yep, that looks about right. It really shows how dangerous storms can be on the Great Lakes, especially with making waves that big. They’re not deep in comparison to the ocean, so a ship breaking in half like that is a much higher possibility- either against the lakebed or while perched on top of two waves.

However, since it is generally a reclusive life, I veil fully as to be in purdah (seclusion) even when outside. There seem to be a growing number of Christian and Jewish women who have decided to veil, though most would not wear a niqab. So not a Muslimah, but have generally good relations with them. I had to use a stock photo since I do not own a camera, but that is how I look when I go out.

    Many believe the Fitz stuck a shoal and from there she took on more water then the pumps could handle. The ship keep going lower and lower in the water until the wave drove her deep and the bow nosedived into the lake bottom snapping the stern when the 26,000 tons of taconite pellets rushed forwarded.

    Nice video remembering probably one of the Great Lakes most famous ship sinkings. This is for all those who go on and on about what a tragedy it was, etc., etc. The Fitzgerald was the only ship to sink in that storm, I repeat, the ONLY ship. Captain McSorley was well aware of the ship's structural weaknesses, and should have been willing to steer the ship out of the storm as soon as he became aware of the storm's approach. This action on his part may very well have saved the ship, its crew and cargo. So what if they would have been behind in time in reaching their destination! The Fitzgerald was due for retirement, this being her last scheduled voyage. Lastly, anyone working on a boat knows full well the risk of a ship sinking and of possible drowning. Yes, its sad that no bodies were ever recovered, but also, not surprising, given the storm in which the sinking happened.

    @robertzastrow4648

    @@brightondale72 Much of what I said in my comment was based on what I read in a book about the Fitzgerald's sinking. I'm sorry, but I don't remember the name of the book. I used to live in Superior, WI and the Public Library there had a copy of the book. In the book, it was stated that the trip was to be both McSorley's and the Fitzgerald's last. McSorley was going to retire and the Fitzgerald was going to be dry docked because of problems that were found in its rivets, which were holding the ship together. The Fitzgerald, on this voyage, was also overloaded with its cargo of taconite pellets, which were putting additional stress on the rivets. Plus, there's an unwritten rule among Captains of Ships, that says that it's better to try riding a storm out, rather than try getting your ship into calmer waters. To do the latter, a Captain would face the ridicule and calls of "Cowardice" by his fellow Captains. This was stated in the book. As I said, the Fitzgerald was the only ship to sink in that storm. That's a fact. At the very least, McSorley should have ordered his crew into their Life Jackets. When talking years ago with a friend about this, I told the friend that had McSorley survived the sinking, he should have been Court-Martialed for putting his crew in unnecessary danger. That's my opinion on that. I know hindsight is always 20/20, but I think it would have been better if the Fitzgerald had headed back toward St. Louis Bay in Duluth, where it had come from, at the first sign of the storm. What would have been the loss in doing that? Gordon Lightfoot would have one less song to his credit.

    Iam no expert but when you are taking a starboard list and your fence railing is going up and down, structural integrity was compromised. 2 out of 4 pumps were going, flooding was going on, there's no doubt she hit the shoal , she lost bouncy this way, the captain I think knew the ship was in grave danger when he said " we are holding are own" at 19:10. Only 2 ships went back out to look for the FITZGERALD, THE ARTUR ANDERSON, AND THE WILLIAN CLAY FORD. Liked the video👍

    (Inspired by "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot) 'Neath the wind and waves Are many mariners' graves Where lost souls forever are buried On board that great ship Till the sea loosed each man's grip Not one of them even seemed worried But November's tempest That great vessel did test None of its crew were survivors By waves men were tossed And all hands on deck lost Their graves found by deep sea divers Not many prevail 'gainst a furious gale That keeps all the sailors a fearing Save for a sturdy cape There could be no escape From sailors and ships disappearing She listed to port And then she came up short As the lake sought right then to claim her The crew fought all night To set the ship right From the unwelcome waters to drain her But no matter how they fought Their efforts were for naught As there could be only one winner The bow soon was full Drawn down by gravity's pull That spared neither saint nor sinner It was already too late When The Anderson's first mate Phoned the captain of the vessel now sinking "We're holding our own" But his fate was unknown As his ship the sea water was drinking Brave men met their doom With their great ship now entombed On the cruel lake's rocky bottom Sailors nine and one score Suddenly were no more For the witch of November had got 'em I'm not sure if they prayed Or what price they would have paid To see another day dawning But for them the bell did toll As they sank in the shoal While the angry sea was still yawning It's been forty years And an ocean of tears Since that stormy night in November To those brave men who are gone We sing this mournful song But in our hearts we shall always remember © 2017 - 2018
