Alongside Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Simpsons is the second of Konami's iconic arcade brawlers. Konami brought their trademark attention to detail to the game, and it looks and sounds as close to the TV show as you could have wished for, given the time of its release.
In terms of plot, Maggie has been kidnapped by who appears to be Weylon Smithers, and it's up to the remaining four Simpsons family members to rescue her. What starts as a fight through the streets of Springfield spills into the nearby, Krustyland theme park, and culminating with a showdown in the nuclear power plant.
If I'm honest, under the admittedly exemplary graphics, the game is rather shallow. The characters have a very limited move-set, so there isn't a huge variety to the combat. This would be far more fun to play with a group of friends, rather than a solo effort, where the camaraderie and close proximity to the other players would pay dividends in the shared experience.
In any case, The Simpsons arcade game is still one of the slickest coin-op experiences of the day, and definitely worth playing, even if it might lack the longevity of other titles.

This game left so many questions unanswered. But it just goes to show you that when you live in Springfield, a lot of amazing and silly surprises happen.
My brothers and sisters and I would play this arcade each time we had a birthday party and Chuck E Cheese's. Such good memories.
I managed to complete this on the original Arcade machine 4 years ago at a retro game exhibition. Awesome game.

@@heyitsfriskey550 Nice! I started playing this with 3 other friends, but 2 got bored and left half way and i finished it with 1 other. My only sadness with it, was the joysticks on the machine were so used, that they were incredibly loose and sloppy. We done Turtles as well a few minutes after it.

@@gwato82 That's okay. I done it regardless if you believe me or not. It was at Games Mania, a retro gaming exhibition at the Glasgow Science Centre in 2018.
There was a "TMNT" reference--Channel 6 is where the Kabuki Boss is fought, and it would later be shown in "Captain Commando" that there was a ninja/kabuki stage there too.
Why was Smithers robbing a jewellery store? Why didn't he just take the diamond out of Maggie's mouth? Why is Dr. Monroe manning a booth at Krusty Land? So many questions...

Why is Smithers British and wearing a cape? Why is Moe's Tavern under the cemetary? What happens when Homer goes back to work at the plant. This game raises enough questions to fill a comment chain.

they probably wanted to take it 1 step further and that was kidnapping maggie to get into the simpsons heads but ended up regretting it
My favourite part is at 27:36 entering Nuclear Power Plant and hearing those eerie noises and getting ready for a epic boss battle, I loved it everytime
Imagine engaging in somethign like this with your family.

I could get to the 3rd stage in the arcades while not losing a life... the cemetery is where the additional quarters started up lol. I was surprised this game never got the SNES treatment. Turtles in Time did it so well.

Childhood favorite that I did played in The Arcades back in 1991 and did beat it also, I actually liked The 2-Player Japan Version the most!

This and X-Men were the games I lost the most quarters on back in the 90's lol. I played them both at Nathan's (for those who are from New York, you remember Nathan's haha).
I have 10 years and this game from my childhood

COWABUNGA, DUDE 😺👍! Me and one of my friends played this arcade game at a kiosk in Helsinki back in 1999 😺👍🕹️🕹️. We were 15 years old 😺👍
This was the best Simpsons game until Hit and Run came out and thats saying something. The opening is incredible apart from some things that are the wrong colour. You can tell there is a ton of love and attention to detail put into the game. Its a shame that this wasn't remastered but Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles was. You should have played the Japanese version as that has some things that aren't in the International Version. Great playthrough though!

I also recommend THE SIMPSONS ROAD RAGE - it was released on PlayStation 2, XBOX, Nintendo GameCube and Game Boy Advance. It's like CRAZY TAXI, but with The Simpsons and other characters as the taxi drivers. Also, i remember playing THE SIMPSONS: BART VS. THE SPACE MUTANTS on my Commodore 64 and Amiga 500 and THE SIMPSONS BART VS. THE WORLD on the NES. 😺👍🕹️

Thing is, this felt like a Simpsons episode, though you wonder what Smithers was really paid if he had to stoop to robbing a jewelry store--or he had the need for a giant diamond (or if Mr. Burns himself had plans for that diamond too).

This game could've easily been converted to the SNES if it weren't for the terrible developers (Acclaim/LJN, for example) having a hulk's strength choking grasp on the IP for consoles back then.

I have many nostalgic memories of this game but man, this music is just the worst. After two levels you feel like you're having some kind of psychotic episode. It's not even really a 'lack of source material' thing, either - the devs just decided they were going compose everything in this insane funhouse style that is impossible to listen to.

Bart is not wearing his trademark scarlet shirt in-game. This game should be modded to have Bart wear his scarlet shirt but… I'm not quite sure which of the ROM files has the character sprite data in it… I only know that two of them contained graphics for backgrounds and HUD while the other two have data on the text shown in-game.
