Pepe used to be the ultimate street sleeper during the mid 2000s as that was my old car! It used to run an mi16 with modified rally spec head and cams, twin 45 weber carbs, a 1.6 gti gear box with 4:4 diff, was running approx 210bhp and used to eat wrxs through the box! It was also running no interior seats bar x2 omp buckets and harnesses and a full Bilstein group n suspension set up and 309 gti rear beam.

The starting issue is a very common 205/309 issue. You go to start the car and it just clicks. Common repair amongst owners is to wire in a second starter motor relay in the engine bay, it's a very very simple fix but works perfectly everytime. I'd recommend visiting the 205gtidrivers forum for the wiring diagram as you can be caught out by the supplementary air device leaving a live to the starter permanently.

I went in a friends fully restored split mint 205 1.9 last Tuesday evening after a classic car meet in Congleton. My last drive in one was around 1995 in my own 1.9 so to be given the chance to get taken for a blast in this at only 2 weeks after it’s been back on the road was a joy. It really was like stepping back in time and I had a massive smile on my face( far more than in my mk7 Golf GTI). In my opinion things have moved on obviously but in some respects in the wrong direction. Now it’s too much emphasis on bhp and a lot less driver involvement so I totally see the appeal of keeping these and other true drivers cars on the road.

That brown plug should be literally sitting at the front of the gearbox underneath a loads of pipes etc. Mine was in a state and I was able to buy a modern replacement, not that that totally solved my ‘click click click’ starting issues. The garage seems to have solved that (so far so good) and I’m guessing it was a dodgy earth somewhere. Great video btw 👍🙂 That rear seal oil leak could be the distributor o’ ring. They go brittle and leak down from the distributor to the back of the gearbox... just a guess made before watching the whole video 😂

Concerning the steering wheel's red GTI emblem, your red marker touch-up looks great. I have done this to dozens of steering wheels.... but.... I have noticed that it will disolve within a year with usage and from interacting with the natural oils from your hands. I have repainted it with a thin paint brush with a RED paint for plastic. Then I covered the area with tape and sprayed a CLEAR COAT spray specifically designed for PLASTIC & RUBBER surfaces. It works very well and makes the emblems look substantial and factory-fresh.

Looking good, things that really make it pop are improved front shocks and bushes, (though the stock aren't bad, age is a thing) as well as improved exhaust headers. The intake only really gets improved when you go full throttle-bodies and they are a pain to setup.

That white 205 seemed angry ! Must be an absolute weapon ! In the end it's a lot of little things very common for 20+ years cars, balljoints, sticky calipers, tune up, bushings etc, but when everything is a bit old and tired, and everything fails at the same time, it adds up, and it takes really more time than skills or money (if you do it yourself), on a driveway, with the painful back, sometimes, trusty workshop is a nice solution. I went this way for the rear right hand bearing on my e30, didn't have time, tools, wounded shoulder etc, took it to a known old bmw shop, 2 days, 200 bucks, fixed. It would have cost me the same with the part and the tool purchase anyway. Glad to see pepe healthy !

There he go again.... 😁 First the Ferrari had to get a different sound, now the little Pug need a different stance. I'd say leave the ride height as it is, it looks the way it's supposed to look. Don't worry about not really wanting to rip the gearbox out yourself. I have learnt it's a part of the growing up process. 20 years ago we would have enjoyed to do it. But not any longer, better to get someone else to do the dirty work. A very good example from my own life, I've today picked the wife's car up from the garage, where it had the A/C regassed. I was on eBay last night to buy the materials to do it myself, and suddenly thought "Naah, that engine really need a steam cleaning, I'll get all dirty, get someone else in on it!" -I recently wanted to try out one of those bargain stereos off eBay. £25 incl postage got me a head unit with a 7" touch screen, and a reversing camera. I was prepared to bin it/selling it on, but it turned out not only does it work, it is rather good. Certainly good value for the money.

Storytime! I owned the smaller 1.6 Gti and it was just a constant source of mechanical issues. Fun as heck, but fragile. On sad day, after picking up my friend for lunch, I put it in gear and intend to drive away (as you do). Car doesn't move an inch. So i thought missed the gear, put it in gear again, and the car nudged forward a couple of centimeters. So, it's a dreadful clutch slip. Look under the car, see oil dripping. Manage to "drive" it by leaving throttle at idle and putting it in third gear. So I'm doing 6 km/h through central Stockholm in the mid day traffic rush. Manage to get to service garage , and they find the gearbox separated completely from the engine, holding on loosely by the top three bolts. How the heck it got to that stage, we'll never know. I'd have LOVED to just have a leaky seal.

its a trait with most of the early hot hatches even up until the saxo. They all love stepping out of line if you enter a corner hot enough! Good fun just got to power out of the turn when the wheel straightens up and you'll be fine.

I'd love to own one, which in principle is possible. A daily... don't know. I had a 106GTI, drove it from new to 100.000 miles in 4 years, and never had an issue, except for the bobbins. Sold it, and the next owner had to exchange many parts in the suspension, that were worn out. Bought a new 106GTI in 2001, which I totalled because of snap oversteer on a cold and rainy day. Had 2 non GTI 205's. Nice driver cars. They don't make it like that anymore. Not a lot of low-speed-fun cars are build anymore. Mazda MX-5, Swift, maybe an UP! GTI?

Being a 205 owner from Wales, with no specialist nearby, would love to know what the costs were for the work done in this video. Looking forward to seeing the weather proofing video

The brown multi plug is under the air pipes next to the battery near the thermostat, not in the glove box!

I totally get that the expense of having someone else work on your car can be seemingly expensive, but with results like this it makes it worthwhile...... if only you could justify the same type of expenditure on the 308...... maybe look for a Ferrari specialist as a sponsor!!!!

Also much more costly.... If it's installed correctly, the chance of a head unit actually catching fire isn't really anything to worry about. Remember, the electronics inside are likely identical to what's in the Pioneer.

@@thefreedomguyuk no, mate. It burned inside the head unit. I believe it was a short between the jack and the usb port. They were too close. But it's price was ridiculous with SD card, USB, Jack... But once I looked inside 😲
