Father Fish, I had many fish tanks as a young kid, all of which were maintenance nightmares and unsuccessful, which led me to leaving the hobby until ~5 months ago. I’m 29 now. 5 months ago I started my first 10 gallon “Father Fish” tank, and filled it with all the “pest” species that I could find and that came along for free with orders. My tank is full of bladder snails, Ramshorn snails, Maylasian trumpet horn snails, scuds, cyclops, seed shrimp, hydra (brown & green), detritus worms, Rotoifers, hornwort, duckweed, salvinia, Monte Carlo, and Ricefish, just to name the obvious. It’s been ultra mega successful, I can’t thank you enough!!! I have literally NEVER cleaned the tank once, the glass is crystal clear with no algae, and so is my Sponge Filter, which looks brand new and spotless due to all the snails, seed shrimp, and scuds. Everything is breeding like mad. The tank did “cycle” fish less for the first 2-3 months, which was a blast watching all the snails have an algae feast and the hydra population explode along with all the other little critters. After I added the rice fish the hydra have essentially disappeared to my surprise, and I have my first little baby fishies swimming around. All of this with zero human intervention other than topping the water off and I removed some excess salvia and duckweed, and added some “floating rings” a few days ago to keep the floaters from blocking all the light out. The aquarium co-op sponge filters are absolutely perfect for this setup. I have the largest model in my tank with the lift tube cut down to around an inch, and the “course” sponge material is absolutely perfect as a habitat for seed shrimp, scuds, and smaller snails to live in and eat clean. Between the sponge filter and possibly some bacteria living in my lava rock used for decoration, I have NEVER seen ANY nitrite/nitrate on my test strips. Also, now that the plants have taken over I have zero algae in my tank other than a small tuft of some Filamentous algae. It’s been an absolutely incredible experience, and I plan on hybridizing a whole new variety of Ricefish (Pearl Galaxy Madaka X Daisys Ricefish) just for fun. If it works this effortlessly in a 10 gallon tank, I can’t even imagine the success in larger tanks. I can’t tank you enough and I hope you got some joy about reading my experience.

This man is the reason my brand new 10g community planted tank is doing so damn well since day one of having fish in it. I did 2 in soil 3-4in sand. It was kinda accidental as the sand shifted and made it deeper. I wanted hills. It’s well planted and growing beautifully this man knows how to keep the hobby simple. I’ve never done a water change just water top offs and I just check my filters. I never do 2 changes at once. I’ll add fish and plants at the same time and no problem. ❤ thanks father fish ❤ I also don’t use chemicals. I only used bottled water. Never tap water. Fluval soil. And just keep adding plants. You can never have too many.

The plants are incredibly healthy and have exploded in growth in 2 weeks. It's absolutely awesome. I haven't kept fish since I was 12 with my Pops, he kept cichlids. And this tank doesn't come close and my Pops is an absolute research and execute maniac! Father Fish is the truth if you choose to go the natural method! Thank you, Father Fish! You know what? I was reminding both my wife and my son about God making us to be gardeners. I appreciate your bringing it up! I have several livestock watering tanks in my yard. Most collect rain water, others I fill with the hose. I’m a gardener myself and I love what you present. I eventually hope to build a home brewed chinampa (floating garden type) in my tanks, both to filter the water and be fed by fish. I care very much about the biology of the soil in my garden. These water tanks should be no different

I'm just scrolling trying to figure out why, after successfully keeping several betta fish for years, i failed so miserably when i decided to do things the "right"way, when i found you. You have confirmed what i suspected. The "right" way is toxic and expensive. I'm going back to the way i did things with a few changes that you've taught me. Thank you so much for being the voice of reason in this mad fish world of bullying, self-righteous experts. ❤ (I wish I had learned this before we lost Shiney Viney the betta. 😢)

What a beautiful explanation of planted tanks Father Fish! I have to do a Utube thing to put The Muddy Guppies up.They are small tanks, full of healthy colourful beauties,no illness ,little interference ,no chemicals and hours of calm enjoyment watching the busy antics of the fish, snails and plants ❤

Hmmm I’m subscribed but don’t know how I missed this video! So calming. I like looking at the tanks other people have created as much as my own. There is such beauty in God’s creation, and that is one of the main reasons I started keeping fish. I went to a sea horse sanctuary on the Big Island in Hawaii and that got me wanting to start a sea horse tank. Long story short, I was talked out of that and thankfully so. However I do have 2 tropical tanks with a heater, one without a filer. I also have a no heater no filter 3rd tank with rosey red minnows. They are all exploding with life, snails, plant life, new fish babies. It’s so exciting. These natural tanks are so amazing and remind me of how the Lord will clothe the birds and flowers so takes even more care of His people. So thankful FF points that out often. Such amazing creatures to have in my care. Thank you FF! (One more thing everyone…people continue to say the world was millions of years old and other nonsense. It’s 6000-10000 at the most. AND was createdin 6 days, not evolved over millions. Just saying 😊)

@@FatherFish I will be so excited to see that!!!! Saltwater tanks seem a lot more complicated so I will be curious how you do yours. My husband will be so happy when I start bothering him again about getting sea horses😂.

I can only have a 5 gallon tank now, due to where I am living, but I did have a 20 gallon it was so fun, but It was not the natural planted tank. I learned so much these past 5 years. I have had fish breading and having babies, it was thriving. But the planted tank with dirt and sand is so much nicer. I have not had to test the water, I have now had it like 4-5 months and its thriving. I had to rid some of the plants that float it was getting kind of to much. Today I plan to plant a few small ones. I have actually quite a few fish in it, they are the small ones neon family, a few shrimp, first time I have ever had them survive. They go to town on the algae ect. I look forward to the day where I can have a bigger tank and maybe pass on the information to others what I have learned and what I have learned from others like you. I got 2 snails as well, a real small one , I thought he died, but I saw him last night he had grown. I'm so excited. Thank you Father Fish. Where is your store?

Wonderful. I was a new aquarium owner worrying about nitrate levels in my tap water, doing regular water tests, water changes, adding chemicals and adding fertiliser for plants. Now, I just feed my fish and use Interpet Tapsafe to top up the water most of the time. The only time I may remove any significant amount of water is perhaps every 6 months when I rinse the sponge filter. I am wondering if in future I should remove some of the aquarium water to rinse the filter and then return the water to the aquarium.

great video FF you're the reason I have fish, there was n way I was gonna do the sterile tank thing with the plastic junk yard in it having to clean it out etc. I love my natural tank I wnt from 2 fish and some plants to more fish and more plants gradually and a few weeks ago I got a snail and he's been very busy, he does a great jpb cleaning the glass. God is a God of balance it so obvious to me that this is what the fish and the plants need, no one can tell me otherwise.

Hello. I appreciate this information very much. Thank you! Can you please tell me if this can be done without a mechanical filter? I am sure you covered that in one of your many posts. Thanks again! Tamara
