    @@randallorndorff i would disagree about the trenches. I belive that for the time it was the best defensive system simply because the constant artillery. I think static strongpoints such as bunkers naturally has their place as well, but the trenches offered the largest amount of protection from shelling (unless you get hit directly). saying its the best at the time is based on the lack of technology for pushing effectively and maintaining supply lines. in a sense I think the best proof for their effectiveness is how widely it was used. I'm fairly certain if they could find a better way or better design they would have resorted to it. however, I would agree that trenches are vulnerable for raids unless supported by machine gun nests, early warning scouts and sharpshooters and not to mentioned barbed wire. I would also agree that defensive lines such as the Maginot Line would be better being a sort of fortified line including bunkers cannons trenches. but outflank-able. however to further prove the usefulness of tranches as a defensive network even against combatants with armor one can look at the finnish against the Russians. note that armor was not easily accessible everywhere but the general use of forcing an enemy to charge a trench seems very dissuading for any force if you have enough defenders in the trench naturally. in short, i personally think the trench especially later war trenches were a decent alternative as opposed to not. especially against enemeies that relay on shelling the general fuck out of you. not all will be safe, but one shell wont wipe out the entire army.

    The enemy not immediately reacting to a few gunshots nearby even makes sense. Real life soldiers are told that if you think you spot something, fire. Better wrong than dead or compromised. So, random shots being fired periodically, especially at night, is probably common for them and not something they'd take seriously. Which also means the Kriegsmen continuing to try and remain stealthy as long as possible makes sense.

  • @Kameolontti

    @Kameolontti

    2 жыл бұрын

    Trying to remain stealthy until you are certain that you have alerted the enemy makes sense and you often notice when you are detected by the increase in activity and the shouting of alarms, blare of alarm sounds etc. which is typically used to ensure all hands are alerted to the attack. As to reacting to shots fired, it is all about individual discipline and unit discipline. They *should* react to it always and every time to some level. That doesn't mean they always do. When I was doing basic we had a smoke screen triggered in front of our positions. I was the senior guard at the lookout and I sent the junior guard to sound a *silent alarm*. The guards of the squad to our left didn't. They were from city and thought the smoke screen was regular fog - they didn't understand it didn't make sense. Had it been a real enemy two things would have happened: 1) Our squad would have been in positions with the silent alarm not warning the attackers that they had been detected. Our sector would have massacred them. 2) There would have been only two men on the sector to our left. They would have been instantly pinned down and overrun. The enemy would then have made it through the perimeter and rolled sideways, our squad would have been picked up from behind. The enemy would have advanced with ease all the way to the secondary defense line if there was any. In worst case if the battalion was on it's own the battalion could have been devastated.

  • @Kameolontti

    @Kameolontti

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@MaroReaver That's why you have other practices such as paired guards etc. and the one that is less exposed has a wire that goes into the bunker and is attached to an alarm bell. But also it happened even in WW2 that a forward lookout was just simply snatched from his forward post - the next lookout to relieve him would find the forward post vacant and the guard presumably captured. Some squads specialized in and became incredibly effective at conducting raids. We also have accounts of such raiders finding enemy trench positions during winter cold without *any* lookouts, even the machine gun pits unmanned and able to take out the whole defending platoon with a single satchel charge into their bunker. And of course some of these raiders might spend several days observing the defenses to learn of all the routines of the defenders to identify weaknesses. So yes, these things happened but they also often depict failures in procedure and discipline on the receiving side as these kinds of raids can be effectively countered often with mere discipline. For nothing makes your platoon as vulnerable as a common agreement that it is easier to let the guard down than to adhere to vigilance. I mean it's a quiet sector and all....

    Fiction, especially the science flavor of it rarely appreciate or account for the idea of how wars are best fought. By doing the smart thing with minimal resources wasted. Warhammer 40k is genius in the way that wars are fought. The Imperium keeps striving for the best results with minimal losses of critical resources. Trenches are really useful because they turn the ground into a shield for your troops and would surely be much cheaper and easier to set up than some amazing energy shield that needs just what the name implies. Energy. Creating the energy for that likely requires burning fuel. Fuel that could be instead used for vehicles, or to make more energy for lights, cooking and perhaps even heating.

Long wars suck, there's no reason to keep digging long trenches for every kilometer when you could keep on the offensive. Heck, it's even on the Art of War itself. This isn't 1900 where weapons where heavy on the defensive favor. Iraq thought trench warfare would be useful in 1991 and the Coalition thought they'd be losing 30k guys, but it just so happened that warfare changed so much that the Iraqi defenses got curbstomped in only 100 hours. Reason why foxholes are still being used is for infantry to hold ground so the rest of the formation could keep up.

I get that you like that universe, it delivers awesome and emotionally charged visuals. But none of this makes sense. We have seen the relative decline of armour compared to firepower for centuries now. All the more pronounced today. And it is a tendency that is likely to continue. And that is apart from chemical, biological and nuclear warfare. It is very very unlikely that people 38k years from now would use what is essentially knights in power armour or cavalry charges or slow moving tanks with thick armour. They'd be sitting ducks even today. Maybe look into reactive armour and why it is necessary. I can't imagine what warfare in 38k years would look like, but certainly not like a mix of middle ages and WW1. Warhammer mixes tech and attiudes from different ages for entertainment, not for realism.

    What really sets the grim darkness here for me isn’t just the presentation which is all excellent, but the back and forth from kriegsmen performing a manoeuvre perfectly to suddenly an out of nowhere space marine detachment making all that progress pointless before it escalates into a full on battle that’ll probably end in a tie. Typically we’ve seen animations with victories or noble sacrifices but here we really see a glimpse into the difficulty and futility of conflict in 40k, and all in just 5 minutes. Seriously, amazing work here.

    IF YOU LIKED THIS, CHECK OUT MY OTHER FILM ABOUT BLACK TEMPLARS kzread.info/dash/bejne/m42ay7RqqLKXmdI.html Comment: 2021 has been an absolute blast making Vraks and interacting with this great community. Unfortunately the changes of GW IP policies brought a lot of uncertainty for all creators. Uncertainty is the death of creativity, we've all seen some of our favorite creators leave the Warhammer scene over 2021. As for The Siege of Vraks, this change in policy came during production of this film. I've decided the best course of action was to drastically reduce the scale of the final project so that it could be "finished" in a much shorter timeframe. Of course that means that in some sense, it's not really finished at all. As you may have come to understand I had much bigger ambitions for Vraks, but until GW sufficiently changes their policies we'll have to do with these five minutes. If one day they welcome fan creators again, I will happily continue this work of love. Thanks to Legio Symphonica for his impeccable sound design work. He's a real pillar of this community. kzread.info Thanks to all the great support I've had over the years. I've learned so much this year and compared to my previous project Sword Brethren I hope my efforts to improve speak for themselves. Yah the Death Korps are very smart, they just have a great desire to die which results in them running straight at machine guns. They try to accomplish something tho with the sacrifice of their lives so their death isn’t pointless. Also you gotta feel for the Vraks defenders. If you read the story they gave the Death Korps, one of the hardest sons a bitches in the Imperium, a serious beating over and over and over again. The Imperium was gunna call off the siege because it was in a stalemate and they wanted access to the weapons on the planet and probably would have gladly allowed the Vraks defenders to serve as an elite force in the Imperial army (cause even they don’t turn away good fighters). The only real thing the Vraks defenders did was defend their home from an invading army and as far as they knew it was the Death Korps that were on the wrong side (civil wars happen all the time in the imperium when commanders and groups disagree). The thing that screwed them tho was the Chaos Marines arriving because now the Imperium had a reason to continue fighting and there would be no pardoning the defenders.

The reaver is basically a dollar store russ, only used by 2nd and 3rd grade units so the vracksians definately had a lot of them. Not sure if that was intentional or just the odd result of some free design choices, but if it would just be an insane attention to detail. Great work.

    The AT-70 Reaver Battle Tank was indeed a discount Leman Russ, but my question is how and why did the Vraksian Heretics get them? My reason is that the AT-70 is most known for being among the forces of The Blood Pact, a large Chaos force that used ti to supplement a lack of Leman Russes and other Frontline vehicles. Vraks would almost certainly have a decent supply of Russes and Russ variants. Maybe what you saw was a Chimera or other armored vehicle? I'm not saying it CAN'T be an AT-70, just that it seems questionable. Then again, at one point in this campaign Khornate Berserkers were being airdropped onto the frontlines to paste Kriegers. So I guess it'd not totally out of the way for the AT-70 to show...

The first time the overall effect was tainted by frustration that this would be all we got until a certain company starts allowing creativity in its fanbase again. It's really good work and I'd have loved to see the rest of what you had planned, and I respect your decision to only do this much and I'm sure all your viewers are grateful for this wonderful segment, but by the Throne I wish we could've gotten the rest.
