The Siege of Jerusalem (70 AD) - The Great Jewish Revolt [FULL DOCUMENTARY]

The entire documentary on the Roman Siege of Jerusalem in 70 AD. This massive battle is one of the most stunning of all antiquity. On display were impressive siege works and feats of bravery on both the Roman and Jewish sides as they fought mercilessly over every inch of Jerusalem. Fighting would even make its way up the the inner sanctums of the Temple Mount and witness the destruction of the Second Temple.

What did the Roman historian Tacitus say about a "spring of never-failing water" in the temple in section 12 of the passage below? He was a teenager when the temple was destroyed during 70 AD. The Jews Book Five (1-13) of The Histories by Tacitus 11. So after encamping, as I have said, before the walls of Jerusalem, he paraded his legions in formation before the eyes of the enemy. The Jews, marshalled close under their walls, were in a position to venture further out if they were successful and had a place of refuge ready at hand in case of defeat. Titus sent against them cavalry and some cohorts in battle order, but the encounter was indecisive. Then the enemy gave ground, and for some days thereafter fought a succession of engagements just in front of the gates. Finally, repeated losses drove them behind the walls. The Romans then concentrated on an assault. After all, it seemed beneath them to wait for hunger to do its work on the enemy, and the troops actually asked to be allowed to risk their lives. Some did so because they had real courage, many from mere bravado and a desire for rewards. As for Titus, his imagination dwelt on Rome, wealth and pleasure: it would be long before these dreams were realized if Jerusalem were destined not to fall in the immediate future. But the city occupied a commanding position, and it had been reinforced by engineering works so massive that they might have rendered even a flat site impregnable. Two lofty hills were enclosed by walls skilfully staggered and forming re-entrant angles designed to expose the flank of an attacker. At the edge of the crags was a sharp drop, and a series of towers dominated the scene, 105 feet high where the rising ground helped, and 135 or 120 feet high on the lower contours. (19) These presented an impressive appearance, and to the distant observer seemed to be on a level. There were further walls inside around the palace, and a conspicuous landmark was the lofty castle of Antonia, so named by Herod in honour of Mark Antony. 12. The Temple was like a citadel and had its own walls, which had been even more laboriously and skilfully constructed than the rest. The porticoes around it constituted in themselves an excellent defensive position. To these advantages must be added a spring of never-failing water, chambers cut in the living rock, and tanks and cisterns for the storage of rainwater. Its builders had foreseen only too well that the strange practices of the Jews would lead to continual fighting. Hence everything was available for a siege, however long. Moreover, after Pompey's capture of Jerusalem, fear and experience taught them many lessons. So taking advantage of the money-grubbing instincts of the Claudian period, they purchased permission to fortify the city, and in the days of peace built walls meant for war. Already the home of a motley concourse, its population had been swollen by the fall of the other Jewish cities, for the most determined partisan leaders escaped to the capital, and thereby added to the turmoil. There were three different leaders and three armies. The long outer perimeter of the walls was held by Simon, the central part of the city by John, and the Temple by Eleazar. John and Simon could rely on numbers and equipment, Eleazar on his strategic position. But it was upon each other that they turned the weapons of battle, ambush and fire, and great stocks of corn went up in flames. Then John sent off a party of men, ostensibly to offer sacrifice but in reality to cut Eleazar and his followers to pieces, thus gaining possession of the Temple. Hence-forward, therefore, Jerusalem was divided between two factions, until, on the approach of the Romans, fighting the foreigner healed the breach between them. --------------------------------------------------------------------- The tabernacle was at Gihon when Solomon was anointed king of Israel. 1Ki 1:38 So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David's mule, and brought him to Gihon. 1Ki 1:39 And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, God save king Solomon. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ During 73 AD the Jewish leader at Masada said the only thing left of Jerusalem was that which belonged to the Romans. The area now known as "The Temple Mount" is the remains of Roman Fort Antonia. On the day the temple was destroyed Titus used Fort Antonia as his base of operations. Did the Romans destroy part of the wall of the fort to gain access to the temple? Yes, but most of the fort remained intact. -----------------------------------------------------------

@@fleetcenturion It is hardly unusually really, almost every siege in history has involved building a wall around the enemy garrison. Titus will rise in the second resurrection and will weep . Revelation 20:5-11 King James Version 5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. 7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, 8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. 9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. 10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. 11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

Jesus The Name Above All Names In The Foot Step Of Jesus God had enacted his law of love your God with all your heart and your neighbor as yourself in heaven as on earth so that it represented his divine character is His immutable will and was the equal to Himself, for the divine law is as sacred as God Himself, and He requires of all the inhabitants of heaven and earth unqualified obedience according to His justice. It was impossible for God to change his law in order to save lost man. Therefore, he allowed his beloved Son to die for their sins. The law of the Lord, on which his heavenly and earthly government is founded, is as sacred as God himself. The Father could neither abolish nor change a single precept of his law the ten commandments to adapt it to the condition of fallen man. But the Son of God who, in agreement with the Father, had created the human race, could validly expiate the sins of man and give his life in sacrifice, becoming himself the object of divine wrath, such would be the price to pay for eternal life. The devil's deadliest deception of all time, is to seduce us with his false words by mixing error with Bible truth, so that they become Bible truth. In the end war is always an act of greed, control and, power. In that order. There is no counting or measure in the lusts of people and the the result is just death. Lives gone for nothing more than a few who obtain some wealth or glory. For these reasons war is always evil. I watched this video thinking of the loss of freedom and right to worship the Jews lost for the centuries that followed. Always wedged between powers and at the whims of tides of change across all of Europe and the middle east. In the end, the revolt destroyed the Jew homeland leading to further war and conquest during various powers regimes and crusades. No good came of it at all. This was the best explanation of the Siege of Jerusalem I've ever seen or read! I loved how you were able to remind us the participants on both sides were people! I've read several things about the Great Revolt, including the book written by Josephus when I was 13. I still have one question that no one seems to know the answer to: what happened to Procurator Flores, the villain who started this whole thing?

  • @ikeeptime

    @ikeeptime

    Жыл бұрын

Long before the siege he was forced out of the city by a mass civilian uprising due to his raiding of the sacred Jewish gold in the temple storehouses. A common joke in Jerusalem was for its citizens to ask eachother for charity money for the "impoverished" Flores. He fled east to Ceaseria on the coast of the Mediterranean. There he orchestrated the complete annihilation of the city's Jewish population. This event incensed the country and was a factor in the Jewish revolt spreading. Eventually he was deposed by Rome for his greed and corruption and atrocities against the Jews. He remains one of the most rabid anti Semites in all of history.

@@InvictaHistory I really hate your humanizing theme. I mean it. I hate it. Deeply. It makes it historically incorrect and it takes away any possibility to understand the time you're exploring and in stead leaves a blurred pattern of a very wierd contemporary understanding that is already dying out. It doesn't bring anything to the understanding of motivation and reasoning in the time before the religion of humanizing. I think you're doing yourself a huge disservice to obscure your own wonderful work by blurring it in contemporary understandings that the times you're investigating didn't even had words to express. By the way the religion of humanizing is only four years old and is already dying off. If we don't succeed killing it off from within, external forces will kill it off. No civilization has ever succeeded on a religion of humanization. The tibethians were occupied. The indians abandoned their strategy of humanitazation as soon as they kicked out the british and in 1947 engaged in a bloody war with Pakistan. Nelson Mandela and South Africa was only humanitarian in words, never in action. Besides The Truth and Reconciliation Commission, there was nothing in the new South African government after the 1994 election that was humanitarian. The UN is another topic. They don't have a border to defend, a legal system to uptain, a cohesion to maintain, taxes to collect and so on. In other words the UN is not a country with the need to uptain it self, its lands and its people. The only real humanitarian actions you see today on a national level is the EU borderless society and the american sanctuary cities. Both are catastrophics and will end very soon. I just hope they will end from within. If not it will end very violent and very bloody.

I love the perspective you give at the end. It’s a feeling I often have when I watch these great battles. That each and every soldier and non combatant needs to be viewed at the individual level. Each one has a name and a loving mother who held and nursed them. Each loved and wanted and dreamed and imagined. Each felt pain, hunger, thirst and so on. However in all these great wars and battles we simply lump them all into mass numbers. I’m glad I’m not the only one who imagines these battles at the human level instead of just a game of checkers. Great video!

"unrivaled courage", "honor", ... - Courage requires choice and adversity. Many if not most participants of that battle had the choice to fight and die or don't and die. Is it honorable when Hamas today slaughters civilians or when Israel bombs other civilians, fighting for their religion, honor and self-belief? They have better choices today than our predecessors at the time. These are just hollow words. When the negotiations before the final slaughter fell apart, was Simon honorable because he stood his ground in the face of defeat? The direct consequence was the slaughter of the poor in the lower city. Simon survived, apparently he did not fight to his own death, only to the death of his subordinates, even though he must have known what happens to enemy leaders in roman parades. Maybe there would still be a temple in Jerusalem, if negotiations had been conducted earlier and differently. Maybe the question of a Jewish and/or Palestinian state would never have to be asked if people would think less in terms of courage and honor and more in terms of compassion and lifes. For my taste, we keep focusing too much on heroism and not enough on compassion.

@@ibnyahud The leadership of the Zealot army proved themselves more than willing to instigate bloody purges of their own command structure in order to maintain their stranglehold on power. Josephus, who, as an aristocrat, seems to have been thrust into an officer position regardless of his own misgivings, seems to have viewed himself as a moderate, and notes that he attempted, on numerous occasions, to negotiate some form of conditional surrender of the city. Given the number of people who the Zealots led to pointless deaths, I find it hard to think particularly ill of him for trying to lessen the bloodshed.

@@56username The bible is simply a fabled history of the Hebrew race. Many Rabbis have privately admitted to the first five books of the O.T. as indeed fables. The Jesus fable had its origin among certain Jews as a standby for Yom Kippur after the destruction of the Temple at Jerusalem by the Roman Titus. Its later editing was subsequently seized upon by Rulers and slave owners for its plausible attraction at those times.

Awesome video, I really enjoyed seeing something ive read and heard about plenty given visual and detailed clarity. I am a Christian, a Post Mill Christian as well, I found it incredibly fascinating seeing something (the utter destruction of Jerusalem and especially the Temple) so Era Ending being visualized, it made the warnings of the Author of the book of Hebrew and the prophecies given to their generation elsewhere in scripture so much more meaningful and heavy. Liked and Subscribed, you earned it with this video alone, and im sure there will be other great videos throughout the rest of your channel as well if this content is anything like the rest of your videos.

@@IAlwaysWantedToTryThat Between 70 and 135 AD, the Roman soldiers stripped the Temple Mount bare - every stone was thrown down… And the remnant of Israel was scattered to the four corners of the earth. The destruction of the Temple foretold by Jesus was complete. The disciples wrote down everything He said over a period of three and a half years. There are many reasons why it took a long time for the disciples to finish their books, and one of them was because of persecution. If Jesus gave specific dates of the sieges, would you still disbelieve him?

The narration was crisp and clear, and the research well-sourced and cited. For someone who wanted an overview of the fighting, you perfectly fed my need to understand the details of the siege without droning on about unnecessary details. Though this hasn't received as many views as your other videos, you deserve to feel proud in your heart that this was one of your best works. The wall was originally erected as part of the expansion of the Second Jewish Temple by Herod the Great, which resulted in the encasement of the natural, steep hill known to Jews and Christians as the Temple Mount, in a large rectangular structure topped by a huge flat platform, thus creating more space for the Temple itself and its auxiliary buildings.

This was an extraordinary video. I was particularly impressed by your closing remarks. I appreciate you keeping some focus on the humanity of the people involved. It's too easy for people to see events like this as just a thrilling story for entertainment, or to reduce the people involved to numbers. But every one of them, Roman and Jewish, was an individual human being not so different from ourselves. What you said about how each of these people was once a baby and a child, I've had similar thoughts before when thinking of historical events. I think I started having such thoughts after watching a 1970s movie, "The Conversation". In one scene, a woman notices a homeless man sleeping on a bench and she says "he was once somebody's baby boy". Somehow that line made a distinct impression on me and it sometimes occurs to me again when I think about events like this. That all those people who killed and died in Jerusalem, every single one, was once a baby and a child who laughed, cried, played, lived life, most of them had families, friends, lovers, none of them were fundamentally very different from any of us, and somehow they all took thousands of different roads through life which all converged at Jerusalem where they either killed or died, or both, in such a horrific way. Somehow it's a sobering thought. I thought I was the only one who ever thought that way, I've never seen anyone else (except the woman in the movie) say anything like it until this video. I'm not sure I even really know what it means or what the significance of it is. But for some reason I just think it's important to remember that they were all human beings.

The Arch of Titus still stands in Rome commemorating the fall of Jerusalem with the carving under the arch which shows the captives and Roman soldiers parading into Rome with the menorah from the Temple Mount and other items plundered during the siege. Powerful vid, and easily one of the best I've ever seen on the Roman Jewish War. The quote at the end.... I've heard it before, but to hear it applied to America? That have me chills.

I don't think I ever seen such an amazing graphic portrayal of any siege in history like this. You took an incredibly complex battle and made it simple to understand. I consider myself to be a student of history but, your documentary help me put together, in my mind, an event that I had aways been curious about but unfortunately, never had the time to study. Bravo.

The narration was so on point. I can imagine the pent up frustration of the proud roman soldiers let loose. The general remembering that ultimately he controls nothing...

Awesome video, such detail. The Jews were very feisty, brave and tenacious in defending Jerusalem. The Romans persistent and relentless. Your last words at the end I think were very well said, moving. Thank you for your hard work. I think I’m just the day after Tish B’av in posting. So many wars will have been fought and sieges without a written record to remember them by. Lest we forget.

We are incedibly lucky to have all the records of the battles we do from antiquity. We know more about what happened 2100 years ago then we do for all the dark ages. After the fall of Rome mankind stopped forwarding civilization really until Gunpowder/Steam Engine came about.

@@qboxer it's an oversimplification of the proceedings for sure, but it's true that on a large scale, the societal and technological advancements during the Roman period were unmatched for hundreds of years. Many old roman settlements-turn-cities such as London, Paris, and many others didn't have access to clean water after the Romans left because they didn't have an understanding of aqueducts. After the Romans left London, it took until the 1800s for the British to get their citizens as good of access to clean water as was enjoyed in Roman times. The Romans were especially unique because of their overarching desire to subjugate people and pass on their culture, not slaughter their enemies. (Of course they slaughtered the ones that gave them trouble, but it wasn't their end goal)

Great video. I can't help but compare what I'd do with what decisions Titus made in the siege. He seemed to expect an easy victory in Jerusalem, not realizing just how fortified it was nor grasping the sense of divine intervention the defenders must have felt. While Titus won in the end, i think he went about it the wrong way. A slower siege would have brought the disunited forces to open conflict in the city as water and food ran scarce. Not to mention the many Legion soldiers that could have been saved from the hard fighting. In any case, great job at bringing the siege to life.

He is despised and rejected of men; a men of sorrows , and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our grief , and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was all . He was oppressed , and he was afflicted , yet he opened not his mouth : he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter , and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openers not his mouth. He was taken from prison From judgment: and who shall declare this generation? For He was cut off out of the land of the living: for he was cutting off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence , neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him ; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin he shall see his seed , he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul , and shall be satisfied : by His knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many ; for he shall bear their iniquities.
