The Shooting of John Barton | November 29th 1919 - Episode 17

On the 29th of November 1919 John Barton was shot dead in Dublin on the orders of Michael Collins. Though he had only recently transferred to G Division of the Dublin Metropolitan Police Barton had found an arms dump belonging to the Irish Republican Army and was investigating the shooting of another officer. It’s possible that with pressure mounting on him following the suppression of Dáil Éireann Collins had Barton shot by the Squad before he could become a serious threat.
A hero to some whose death shocked the capital city, a villain to others for identifying prominent rebels after the 1916 Rising, Barton’s death marked the end of the opening phase of the Intelligence War.
Please note the wrong dates are given in this episode, Barton was shot on the 29th of November, not the 30th as stated

A bit of a mix up with the dates on this video, Barton was shot and killed on the 29th of November 1919, not the 30th. Shortly before I began recording this episode I discovered that Barton was buried really close to where I live and with the help of a friend we think we were able to find his grave. Radio Kerry asked me on to speak about him shortly before the anniversary of his death, you can check that out here: www.radiokerry.ie/kerry-detective-killed-collinss-orders-november-27th-2019/

Thanks for checking out the video. I haven't looked into much but I have seen some references that MacDiarmada was executed after Connolly. As he was discovered while the courts martial were being held it would make sense that he be added to the end of those to be tried and then added to the end of the list to be shot.

@@TheIrishNationLives They were both shot on 12th May but i thought as Connolly was in a chair with gangerene after injury in the GPO that as he could not walk or even stand that he was last to be shot. You are providing a wonderful display of our history.Well done and keep it coming.

@@tricker1957 A priest who was present for the execution says that Connolly was so badly injured he couldn't remain upright in the chair and was executed on a stretcher placed at an angle against the wall. There is a good account in the treason felony blog: treasonfelony.wordpress.com/2016/04/04/they-told-me-how-connolly-was-shot-in-the-chair/ I have seen a much more detailed description that says Connolly was marched out and wanted to be executed standing, but when he was placed at the spot he fell over. Then he was seated in a chair but couldn't remain upright in that either. I can't find that account at the moment, I'll post it if I do, but it does look like he was at least marched or walked out to the execution spot.

@Michael o' sullivan And what Fr. McCarthy says in the above post is contradicted here by what Fr. Aloysius says, who writes that MacDiarmada was shot before Connolly and that he was shot sitting down, though I think he might also have been trying to put Connolly's family at ease instead of letting them know of the great pain he must have been in, and his desperate attempt to muster enough strength to stand and be shot like a soldier. www.weneverforget.org/we-never-forget-irish-rebel-james-connolly-executed-at-kilmainham-goal-on-friday-may-12-1916/
