My wife stayed at home and took care of the house and the family while I served the country as a U.S. Army soldier. I am now retired with a reduced income but we are okay since we have no debts, kids have finished college and have careers and spouses of their own. My wife has a Social Security spousal benefit which after taking Medicare deduction, amounts to $475.00 only per month. It’s not much considering the work she did to keep a nuclear family intact and successful.

@@debbabe2254....I disagree. Everyone's "Fair-share" of income taxes is ZERO. Why? Because income taxes are people laboring for the government, under threat of punishment, if they don't turn over the "Fruits" of their labor. ...Now, take a moment to remember what sIavery is. First, we must also realize that citizens being taxed, while the gov continuously and gratuitously mismanages taxes, means that ALL taxation is unfair to the people. Second, IF taxes were to be managed properly, the means of taxation needs to be fair and equitable for all people, and not compelled through violence and punishment. While no system is perfect, the "Fair tax act of 2023" does a much better job at being fair than our current tax model. It basically gets rid of ALL taxes, except a single inclusive sales tax. It's fair because everyone has agency in how they spend their money, and people tend to spend according to their wealth. For instance, a Rich person buys a yacht, a middle class person buys a motorboat, a low income person buys a kayak, and a poor person buys a hatchet to carve a log into a canoe. Also, those who don't pay income taxes because they are criminals, or paid under the table, would now become part of the tax cycle just by buying things they normally would. Fair. _"A wise & frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, & _*_shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned."_* - Thomas Jefferson

The Social Security trust funds hold money not needed in the current year to pay benefits and administrative costs and, by law, invest it in special Treasury bonds that are guaranteed by the U.S. Government. It is the extra OASDI tax collected because more money comes in then is paid out. As Baby Boomers retire, that will flip to needing to pay out more than comes in. Hence, "a reduction in benefits". With the amount of taxes one pays into social security over a course of 40 to 50 years, there's certainly NO NEED to raise the full retirement age; what we should be focusing on is a) eliminating those that have been on welfare handouts for decades ; b) eliminating generational welfare c) eliminate wasted government funds spent on paying someone to DO NOTHING or pay for destructive behavior d) eliminate all handouts to foreign governments and e) eliminating PORK programs that are far outside of the original intent of what a federal government should be about. Efforts should be made to put ALL men and women of working age that are able - to work and let them contribute instead of being LEECHES upon the rest of taxpayers. Money should not be stolen to forgive debts, bank bailouts, business or industry bailouts, but that money should be earmarked for those that certainly have contributed and worked for decades and been FORCED to contribute; not the LEECHES, no matter the level.. It is amazing that we always hear about not enough money to pay for Social Security, when working taxpayers have paid into the system for DECADES, but we NEVER hear about shortages of funding for HANDOUT programs for generational welfare, food stamps, housing assistance, and even aid destined for ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.. Hmm. Maybe Congress's focus is WRONG ; 12.5 %, when you consider both the employed and the employers contribution, over a course of 40 + years, and if there's any group that is entitled to benefits, it's those that have been FORCED to contribute..

Taking away spousal support is also unfair as in many cases the spouse enabled the primary income maker the ability to earn as they took care of the household and family. They are already doing means testing for Medicare. If a person has an income higher than a certain amount, they make them pay more for Medicare every month. But a salary of $85,000 per year is NOT a “high income”, it’s middle class! And in expensive states like California, New York, and Illinois, $85,000 is actually a fairly low salary because those states are so expensive to live in and $85,000 per year doesn’t go very far! I agree. But unfortunately there is already means testing in the program. The bend points, when applied to Average Indexed Monthly Income, to determine Primary Insurance Amount, results in massive redistribution of benefits. Ditto for spousal benefits, child benefits, and disability benefits. If you paid in at the lowest income level (even if because you only worked part time), you could receive more than you made while working. Add a spouse, or a couple of ex-spouses and that number could be in excess of 200% of what you earned while working. Compare that to a higher income worker, who paid in the maximum for 35+ years with no spouse, and they will only get 25% AIME credit. That is not 25% of what they earned while working. It is much less because the 25% is only applied to the amounts that were taxed for social security. The “bend points” are 90%, 32%, and 15%, applied to different income levels. I wish these videos would point that out, or at least mention it.

No, the full retirement age should not be increased. Let's reduce the elected officials salaries instead! They should be ashamed of themselves for raising their salaries while adding to the work years of average citizens who do real work instead of the busy work they engage in, in my opinion! Also, if they had never taken the social security from our checks and left planning for our retirement to us where it belonged, then they wouldn't have to bother with paying us anything for retirement. My husband and I would be independently wealthy if we had received the social security taken from our checks over our working life instead of the government taking it and giving it to those who should not receive a dime; illegal immigrants, those who never worked and contributed, etc, in my opinion! No I do NOT support raising the retirement age, neither do I support needs based pay outs. If the government took that money out of our checks all these years, we are entitled to our fair share. Maybe if they'd quit handing out stimulus checks to people less than a third our age playing the disability scam, too lazy to work, the gov't could take that money and funnel it back in to social security for working senior citizens.

So you'll know, I'm a lower income widow who had to wait working and juggling to make ends meet several years to be old enough to draw anything on behalf of my late husband who died suddenly at age 61. I live in the state of Texas and am a retiree from the public education system. All my 26 years as a Teaching Assistant I did not pay into SS, but instead (had no choice) paid into the Texas TRS (Teacher Retirement System). I did also work more than 10 quarters outside the education world and paid into SS each paycheck. I retired at age 67 so I actually drew my SS earned for 2 years (age 65-67) while I was still working. My husband retired 5 months before me, so I also drew spousal benefits during those 5 months. Once I retired, because of the GPO, I lost all my spousal benefits and because of the WEP I lost 2/3 of my own SS benefits. During those 5 months my SS bank deposit (after Medicare withheld) was right under $1000 a month. After I retired, it dropped to $69 a month. Last year's large increase jumped it to a whopping $78. This system even now is so unfair to any who work in public education!!
