There are a lot of strategies to make tongue-wetting profit that the average joes don't know. . Personally, the financial-market for me seems the only way forward with my long time horizon (accrued roughly $457k in gains since Mid 2021 ) but if you don’t have that fortune of time it’s a tough market out there almost nowhere feels safe!

Devin, thanks for always giving us helpful information to navigate Social Security and get our best benefits. I just got off the phone, after waiting 2 hours on hold I might add, to make an appointment to apply for widow's benefits on my husband's earnings. The representative tried to convince me that I will have to choose between my earnings or my husband's because I am 66. I told her 3 times- no, I'm not applying for spousal benefits or my own. I want widow's benefits, Form SSA-10. She finally put me on hold and went and asked somebody. She said I am right. After age 66, it doesn't matter how much I earn. I can file for widow's benefits. And then at age 70, I will file for my own. It pays to educate yourself by listening to people like you!

Devon, in you linked article you mentioned bank account protection. I have a friend over 65 living entirely on her SSDI payment. She had been previously advised to transfer some of this income into other (same bank) accounts she and her husband had at the time of his death. So she does this in small amounts monthly. Are these other accounts protected too since all the deposit into the main account appears to be protected? Or does this practice need to stop? Thanks.

Excellent video. Background--I am the older spouse. Married more than 10 years. Neither of us has reached FRA or filed for benefits. Spouse will receive substantially more than me at FRA. Spouse recently passed away. Possible strategy-I file for MY benefit when I turn 65 (and am eligible for Medicare) and then switch to survivor benefit when I reach my FRA. Question-Is this the best strategy? And how does FRA for survivor benefits differ from FRA? And-is there anything else I should consider? Thank You!

He is not in good health. Infact, his doctor told us he only has 3 years to live. That was 1 year ago when we were told. We have been married for 30 years. Can I collect social security benefits based on his? And knock on wood, he passes away , can I switch to survivor benefits which I heard would be 100% of what he is receiving now? Thanks!

I'm understanding the reduced benefit set at 82.5% of FRA when your late spouse began benefits at 62 - and the surviving spouse claim is at it's maximum at roughly 62.5, depending on birth year, when your reduction is 17.5%. I'm understanding the 100% of FRA when those benefits began at or after FRA. This is when the surviving spouse claims at their FRA. What about the missing middle? My late spouse claimed about 9 months prior to FRA. Roughly 6% reduction. Am I right in presuming that when my reduction is that 6%, my survivor's benefit is at it's max? Somewhere between 62.5 ish and FRA, matching the actual reduction that the late spouse received?

This is an older video but…here is one on survivor benefits. I was married for ten years so it’s not me. I am watching a few people who are 2nd marriages. Like long term, maybe even 20 years. They know the 1st is dying. They file for divorce on #2 so they can qualify for SS based on #1 survivor benefit rate. I don’t ask if f their plan worked so will ask you. Does it work? Oh and 2 told me they plan to remarry #2 after they go thru the process.

Enjoyed the video and learned a lot. But I have a question about the calculations shown mid-way through (for calculating the monthly reduction %). In step 3, do you divide the number of months (from step 2) by 28.5% or do you divide 28.5% by the number of months? The later method would come up with % reduction per month which is what I think you want.

Now years later they are both past FRA and If he then passes away first, my understanding is she will receive his full benefit as long as it is greater than her own benefit. Is this correct?

Thank You. I enjoyed your video. I have a question. I've been widowed since 1990. My full retirement age, 66 2/mos will be Jan. 2021. I plan on signing up for my spouse's SS., but I've called the SS Office 3 times as was given 3 different amts as to what I will receive. Why doesn't anyone know the right answer? It's been very frustrating and confusing for me. Do I have to go down there and wait in a line for hours to speak to someone that knows what they are talking about? Please help me with this. Ready to pull my hair out.

The SS office closed. Must call someone working from home and make appt. Workers from home have no monitors and say what they know. This may not be correct answer. Get it in writing.

I am 78 years old and receiving full social security benefits. I am married to a Filipina who is leaving in the Philippines with me. Will she be qualified to receive social benefits when I died? She doesn’t have social security number and never been in United States. Please acknowledge and thank you!

My income was higher than my husband’s, We both waited for full retirement, so my benefits were more than his,He passed at 79 years of age, so I did not get his benefits , only mine. We were married for 52 years, So I lost that income. But the expenses are still the same.

Hopefully Biden spouse ss benefit passes as the way it looks they would take 75% of yours and 75% of his and that would be your amount with out exceeding a certain amount. Write to your reps.

A married couple are both receiving social security retirement benefits and one of them dies. Is the survivor entitled to receive any of the benefits the deceased spouse received? If social security did not exist, they could have put the money away for themselves, but the government took it from them. If they had not been forced to give it to social security, the couple would have it available to them, and if one dies, the survivor would have it all.

Thank you very much for this info. I became a widow at 58, my husband was 68 when he died. He collected SS at 62 and I put it all in the bank because he collected a pension. I work full time for health benefits so I put off collecting my widows benefits until I reach my FRA which is 66 1/2 so I can still work full time up to the SS limit. When I do collect my SS I will collect on the survivors benefits only because my husband was getting way more than I would on SS. His 80% because of early collecting is still more than mine would be at 100%. Please tell me if I am correct or not, and feel free to correct me. Thank you. :)

I was diagnosed with ALS 2 years ago. I'm on disability now. So can I get my wife's benefits now? I'm 55 now.

Scott Chastain If you are disabled before age 60 you can get your wife's SSDI now. Talk to Social security about your survivors benefits. If hers was a higher amount than what your getting now then they will give you hers. As long as you haven't remarried.
