Oil chemist Selina Wang at University of California, Davis, published a study on avocado oil in the journal Food Control (2020). She purchased avocado oil from stores around the USA as well as on line and subjected it to careful chemical analysis. Most of the oils were rancid, many were adulterated, and three tested out as more than 90% soybean oil. Because there are no official standards for avocado oil in the US, there is no regulation. I am an olive oil producer in California and so I have an inside view of the industry. If you buy inexpensive olive oil in the supermarket in a clear plastic bottle with a Mediterranean origin, it is almost certainly refined oil. It was old, rancid oil from which the rancid odors and flavors were cleaned up by steam distillation or extraction with solvents. This destroys most of the polyphenols, which as Dr. Gundry points out are one of the chief health values of olive oil. If you want good olive oil expect to pay at least $10 for a half liter bottle. The container should protect the oil from light, and the label should indicate the harvest date (not the use-by date); you want fresh oil of the current year harvest.

@@sl4983 Maybe, maybe not. Many labels are misleading. For example, California Olive Ranch sells olive oil from Argentina, which isn't necessarily bad oil, but you would have to study the label carefully to see where it's from. On the whole, most California producers are making good oil, especially compared to some of the oils coming out of North Africa (labeled 'product of Italy', which is where it was bottled). Even under optimal storage conditions (dark, cool, oxygen free) olive oil will slowly lose it's character, which is why you want the freshest oil.

Both avocado oil and olive oil are healthy oils and switching to them instead of seed oils (veg oil) is a good thing. Both will work fine for cooking or salads. Beware that both industries will add seed oil if they can get away with it, so look for quality in either. There are much bigger issues affecting your health then pitting avocado oil and olive oil against each other.

As an extra virgin olive oil producer from Southern Italy, with more than 2000 ancient olive trees, we are steeped in the tradition of cultivating and savoring our own olive oil. It's a ritual that's been passed down through generations and is part of our everyday lives. From my 2-year-old son to my vigorous 85-year-old father, who tenderly tends his olive trees as if they were his own children, we all relish the oil that our land generously offers us. This is not just olive oil for us; it's a lifestyle, a passion, and a connection to our roots that fuels our health and longevity. It's my belief that every drop of our olive oil is a testament to the vibrant, nourishing Mediterranean lifestyle that we are blessed to live. Choose genuine, choose local, choose health - embrace the essence of extra virgin olive oil!

Disagree. In the United States shoppers have great CHOICE between ultraprocessed foods versus unprocessed/minimally processed foods. In the 30 countries in which I’ve visited markets, I’ve found no greater freedom of choice than in the States. Blame those U.S. shoppers who make poor choices solely on the basis of taste. Freely available information about making wise food choices has never been greater than it is today. This video is one such example. Making food choices based upon advertising is merely foolish.

Coconut oil is atleast 90% saturated fat so there's no way that olive oil oxidizes less than coconut. You should barely heat olive oil, if you heat it at all, so I do not agree with him there. You cannot deep fry in olive oil without turning it into poison, but you can deep fry in coconut so I will stick to using EVOO mainly to drizzle over my salads rather than waiting for it to smoke in the pan and think its OK. Its not!

Macadamia is awesome and really not talked about. Its super high in Omega-9, very low in Omega-6 and Omega-3. I like it because it barely has any Omega-6. I can always supplement the Omega-3 or add some refined Flax oil which has a higher smoke point than unrefined flax. I only use Australian extra virgin macadamia nut oil. Walnut oil is almost all pure Omega-6 so I would not use this for cooking or at all, unless you have some kind of Omega-6 deficiency. Butter is great, and Ghee is even better as long as they both come from grass-finished cows.

point is that perilla naturally contains a lot of oil. you can cold press, without chemical extraction, and directly consume it. The classical seed oils need an industrial dirty process. Second, the chemical composition of Perilla is unique, and very different from those bad seed oils. It is not only unique, but very strong, such that is a base component of traditional chinese medicine

I hope its from Australia if its high-quality. But macadamia nut oil is awesome and little known in the typical kitchen. Very high in Omega-9, very little to no Omega 6 or 3, and has a high smoke point. Only thing better, in terms of hardly any nasty Omega-6, is coconut oil and that one is mostly saturated fat. Mac nut oil is mostly all monounsaturated.
