The Shimano Stella is Great. Is it worth it???
Ойын-сауық
The Shimano Stella SW is a great spinning reel with many awesome features. However, in today's video I go over why I recommend some people don't buy it. I go over some negatives, some positives, some alternative spinning reels, and my personal assessment of the reel. This isn't a comprehensive review of all facets of the reel, please see Alan Hawk's review below for that:
My number one source when doing research on the reel was Alan Hawk's review found below:

I really liked this vid. Really good review in layman's terms, especially letting the viewers know a new version/model coming out this year, which most would not know. I've seen some of your other vids, Really like the Japan fishing one recently, and seen you with Vic from landshark.....so I've subbed...also have seen some of Allen hawks reviews...he is one in-depth dude.....that's a good thing. Can't wait to catch up on your previous vids. Tight lines 😎

stella is crap.. the makaira is a better reel for hundreds less.. for many hundreds less, though heavier, the cabo will outlast the stella if I had to guess... for the money, the Ecooda Hornet is pretty damn good, actually, if all you are doing is vert jigging or live bait work.. just saying..

Yeah but Daiwa will love you for this. lol
I paid $825 for my 14K shipped from Ottos Tackle in Australia. No play anywhere. Love the reel. Been slaying fish with it for a few years now and no issues.
Juno, Enjoyed your assessment. I have a question I can't find an answer to; I have a Stella 2500S. Is it possible to put a different spool on it that would allow me to put more line on?
Please help, I have the following Shimano Stella reels: Shimano Stella 4000FB Shimano Stella FW 4000S I am looking to buy a slightly larger spare spool for each of the reel. Can you tell me if the 5000 spools size (in the same series) will fit the 4000 size reels.
Love the review. Never used one but would agree with every point u made.
Super thorough review. I especially liked where you went over the play in areas where you wouldn't expect it. That makes me wonder if the reel is as watertight as they claim it is. Also, the plastic parts. Interesting facts about the 30000 being the same components as the 20000 with only the outside components changing, I could see how that could wind up with gear damage, especially if your targeting monsters. Hope your Japan trip is going well. Take care. Until next time, tight lines & good vibes.

thanks brother! It's tough to make engaging content changing locations all the time but I'm still trying!
want to buy the SHIMANO Trevala 5'8 XXH for off shore lighter fishing . 30 lbs snapper . which stella reel should I pair with it?
Hi Ryan....thx for the advice. Happy belated New Year and may u catch many more this year. Can't wait to see. 🍻🎣
I agree with you on the plastic bits, even if it's for weight saving, it'd be better if they were metal, or at least covered with thin metal.
Was the play on the handle present out the box new or it turned out to have wiggle(play)..
Love the review and also appreciate your honesty

Choverine you’re the man!
From an understanding of metallurgy having a little bit of play in some of those parts will be a benefit because a part that is to stiff has a tendency to shatter
That’s why I went with the Exist. I love the fact it has the magseal. Since I fish Saltwater.
New here, thanks for the info on that reel. I use mostly Shimano reels and love them all, some from the early 90s and they all still work great.
What can I do if my reel has some play in it like you point out
I would much rather have marine grade brass than hardened steel. Do you have any idea how harsh and unsmooth it would feel with hardened steel?!
Liked and subbed. Super informative and led to some sick fishing action from your vid library. As a super keen rock fisho and KZreadr in NZ. I use the Fin-nor offshore reel. Heavy reel, super solid, simple, and reliable. And cheap when compared to others. Highly recommend if you can handle the extra weight. Would be interested in your technical thoughts on the dogfight range though.
Hi bro what do think about the penn ssv 10500 i found one 150$ Do you recommend it for me ?
Entering their 38th year my BG15 and BG60 are still going strong lots of salt. I hope I can out live them and get something a bit tighter someday.
Why Stella 2019 just have 3 sizes for SW?8000,10000&14000..any idea?
I can get behind this. A Stradic is all the reel I need. I've nearly made the 10 to 1 club with them.
Yep. Got my SW for $940 and that was on Sale !!! Apart from that. No complaints 👍
Can you please guide about the reel with following features 1. Long cast 2. Large capacity (min 300 meters for 0.6 mm line) 3. Sturdy atleast as fin nor or diawa BG
I love fishing but I don't love it that much to spend a k on 1 reel. Really enjoy watching your videos.
Fantastic review, thanks. Please review the new 2019 version!!
I am not sure if it has already been mentioned by somebody yet but the small amount of play disappears under load is most likely there for a calculated reason. Because all materials have a certain amount of flex/squish, and with the huge forces applied upon a spinning reel when fighting mega strong/heavy fish, that "play" allows gears to mesh better and things not to grind on themselves. Imagine it was made using ultra tight clearances between parts, then all that force is applied...the parts (especially meshing of gear teeth) would be actually pushing on each other and it would feel rougher, tighter & less smooth -than if the clearances were there to start with before loads are applied. Among other similar systems I installed motorcycle sprockets (chain drive gears) & chains for years as a motorcycle component technician and I would never install things that roll/move under heavy load super tightly, or with no room for "give". I have also installed and maintained many of Shimano's push bike gear systems- and there is engineered tolerances, movement & flex in these gear systems- that work under load also. Hope that might give you some answers? but yes cheap products do have unintentional "slop" between rolling/moving parts-Which seemingly similar in feeling when turned not under load, will not translate into less wear and smoother function when loaded up with the strain from some reef pig/pelagic donkey-like the movement/flex from the Stella SW would.
@dcgo44r
5 жыл бұрын
Nope, that not how things work under stress! High tolerances always been critical in precise components! I think engineers don't need that kind of tolerances in a reel, but for that money.. yeah!
You deserve so many more subs man, best fishing channel on KZread in my opinion.
You are so right about the areas on the Stella having play in them for the price point shouldn't be any play to be honest I have owned Shimano products and I was caught up in the Shimano hype until I touched a Daiwa... much more Superior product. The reels are built more solid have a sturdier feel have a more quality feel
What type of rod you use with this reel for jigging?
Love this video. Do the same kind of video on the 2019 Stella when it comes out.
excellent comment my dear juno, I always dreamed of buying a reel estella sw, but thank you great comment on this, and stop dreaming and I will look for other options, such as you indicate or maybe, opt for van staal you can help me with your opinion about this brand of reels. thank you brother and greetings from Costa Rica 🇨🇷.
I have Saltiga 2015 model and Stella sw 2013 model.I have to say than saltiga feels like tank in all the ways.It also has better drag in smoothness .Stella is like plastic has play almost everywhere .It feels like a saragosa sw.I regretted buying stella over Saragosa. On the other hand Saltiga worth all the money i spend.
Hey man, great input! Can you do one on the Dog fight 8000 and maybe one where you compare both?
Excellent video also the Van Stall video the same, both very informative and helpful
Never had any issues with any of my shimano stuff including my stella
Shimano changed that angle on their new reels, including the 2013 Stella SW, in a somehow controversial move. The foot of the Stella is now parallel to the main shaft, something that has caused problems to a number of users, particularly of bigger sizes 18K and up. The new parallel foot of the Stella SW meant that on standard jigging and popping rods the line would come out of the reel at such a sharp angle it would not remain seated on the line roller, which causes line damage and a weird feel when reeling. Following many complaints and a few videos that were posted by European anglers showing the issue. Source Alan Hawk in the saltiga expedition review.
Have you used the okuma makaira spinner yet?
The tighter everything is leads to more thing that could go wrong (ie gears/bearings and such). There should be "some" play.
I used to have a Stella 8000PG (the blue one from 1999), and does have some play indeed but it does not affect at all the fishing though. The smaller ones (I had a Stella 2000 FA), and it was great! one of the best I ever had (ok, the certate is also very good), but the wuality back then used to be much better...
I prefer my saltiga expedition over my Stella 14k but both are top notch spinners and I think the drag is superior on the saltiga also

Great review, I know a guy who design's reels for a living I asked him about the Stella's and he recommend a reel a fraction of the price! He mentioned that the build on these reels for the price is pretty poor, he mentioned the gearing and materials used in the build should be a lot higher standard! I'm definitely a quality but value for money guy that way you don't have to worry about not being able to get parts after the reel has been discontinued you can just buy another one and the latest model great video thanks

Shortsolja90 just depends on what I’m doing, lots of beach and land based stuff: VS Spending time on the boat chasing pelagics on spinning gear: Stella
It sounds like they are going cheaper on their parts for more profits! Knowing that people will still buy the reel because its made a good name in the fishing community!
I use to be a Shimano fan but have switched to lessor price reels the problem I had was bearings would freeze up , I would send them back to Shimano factory they would charge only $ 25 never repaired but I would get a new reel every time great service but it takes about 3 weeks to get back. I would rinse after use and clean the best I could once I tried to take down to clean but my hands couldn't handle the little screws so I sent it to Shimano in a baggie they sent me a new reel WOW ! I now use Diawa and Tsunami and have had no issues.
Juno I like to see a video on the Penn spenfisher reel now I would like to see that
I fish the North East of long island just can't think of dropping that kind of money if I can't feel underwater i.e. Van staal or z bass

So whats your fav reel right now den?
Got the opportunity of comparing the slammer high speed to the stella and this newer model doesn't compare to the slammer 3. Only thing was slammer was heavier/ bulkier
I guess I can pay rent this month...
Saved up for my 20000 $ 1400.00! Its large and its on the heavy side but its drag is what I was after. I bought it to go with a popping rod for casting out to tuna. No complaints whatsoever. By far my biggest investment in a reel. Its my 5th shimano reel, Abu garcia are my others.

Can’t beat the drags on Stellas👌🏼
I own the 4000 8000 14000 Stella and I have zero buyers remorse, rinse them off the fresh water after every session and they're good to go every time 🤙🏾🤙🏾 The plastic you refer to are only shrouds on the Hagane body which is a cast aluminum composite according to shimano and in ten years time I reckon we'd be able to 3d print new components if anything wears out. Fast and furious 6 and dodge ball !
Do these suffer from line twist like the rest of the Shimano range ? I gave up on the Stradic for this very reason - changed to Daiwa Airity Tournament and have absolutely no regrets.

Jheez, I bought a £50 carp reel and it didn’t have no where near as much play! (I’m from uk, so yes I fish for carp)
I have a Stella 8000H, didn't know it's not spool swappable with the 10k and 14k.
Very objective opinion
I got a daiwa saltiga. I feel like overall its a better design then a stella.
sadly there will only be 2 sizes of the new 2019 version.. For me all I need is a good spinning reel that can handle gettign squirted on with salt water some times (obviously i need to take care of it everytime i get home). Im inclined with the shimano stella FJ cause its alot lighter and spinning here means long walks by the shore looking for seabass.. probably the stella SW is too heavy for that and too heavy for light spinnig.. 30 grams max
Listen, for big offshoe fishing such as marlin pitching or tuna, the 30000 is definitely worth it over the 20000. It is not much heavier than the 20000 and stacks much more line than it. I have 700 yards of 80lb on the braid and can last me for ages
@zander5402
5 жыл бұрын
Also the drag on the Stella’s is 55lbs. The 30000 has 44.1lbs of drag, although this is less. Who is going to use 44 lbs of drag. It is too much drag in the first place and I have never had to push either my 14000 or my 30000 especially as the 30000 stacks so much line
i have 2 x 20000 and a 14000 and last week i went fishing for large fish 30 kg plus both my 20000 broke spool won’t go up and down very disappointed
I've had a 10K Stella and I'd never buy one again. It's a really nice reel but I have multiple Saragosa's and for the price you can't go wrong. Save $1,000 and just get the Gosa
