Is it worth it? $1000 Fishing Reel (First Impression of the Shimano Stella)

I just bought myself one of the most expensive fishing reels on the market, the SHIMANO STELLA. This fishing reel is the FERRARI of spinning reels, and the cost is in the same ballpark by comparison. I’m going to be taking you through my first impressions of the Shimano Stella 5000 sized spinning reel by taking it striped bass fishing in the Chesapeake Bay.
We are trying a new fishing method called trolling, where instead of continually casting over and over again, we drag our lures behind the boat and motor around covering water in search of fish. Trolling is one of many ways to test this reel, it is just what we happened to test first! I need more fishing time with this reel before i can give a full in depth review, this is my first impression! Stay tuned for an in depth review of this reel in a couple months!

Took my brand new Battle II 5000 for a spin yesterday for the very first time and I hooked a 20lb yellowtail using a Ugly Stik X2 (medium hard) rod kzread.infoUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . This combo was recommended on some website and it did not disappoint me. The reel is smooth, the drag click is pretty cool cause i think it adds to the excitement of fighting the fish, personally the drag is my favorite part. I use braid and 300 yards will fill the entire spool. This combo is my main setup from now on although I have to disclose I am new to fishing.

Saw the older models on clearance on basspro because of the newer ones that came out and ended up pulling the trigger on the newest 2020 model 5k. No regrets and already put some GTs on it. Never had such a smooth fight with a fish. The smoothness and the platinum service that comes with the reel is what makes it the legendary reel that it is.

I am now soon 54 years old and have fished for as long as I can remember, and maybe even longer than that, as I have seen photos of me holding fishing rods at the age of 3. I have fished a lot of different kinds of fish, with lots of different methods and in many different places in the world. Both salt water and sweet water. There are not many times I see the point of having a Stella and where a much cheaper reel can't do the job as well as a Stella. Yes, it is suuuuuper nice to use and you get the high end luxury feeling, but if you don't have tons of money to spend on fishing gear, you should ask yourself what else you can buy for that kind of money instead. In most cases, would it be much better to invest the money in some high end top quality fishing rods. You will in most cases get much more fishing fun and fishing results by spending more on your rod and less on your reel. Where a Stella really shines and might be worth the money, is when you need a very powerful break that works as it should, no matter the beating it gets from a very strong and/or fast fish. Like when fishing for Marlin. Specially when you happen to hook a much larger/stronger fish than you thought you would. That is when a cheaper reel can let you down and be the reason for why you lose the fish.

It costs what it is to catch beasts with a 7/0 hook wire leader. If you say its a Ferrari of a reel...drive it at high RPMs and feel that power fighting bigger fish. I did the same fighting that 40" Tarpon on my Stadic FL 4000 and caught it with ease. So I hope the next video to see some muscle baby! Treat it nice but enjoy it as well! You know... I was at 1st like: “$1,000 dollars for a reel! Hell Naw!” But then I thought... if someone LOVES Fishing ALOT and they want this reel... who am I to deter them from getting this reel for their passion. And after going to Cabela’s and FEELING one of Shimano’s smaller $100 reels I was like: “-Damn this is engineered good!” Then I thought: “If this is one of the nicer reels out of all these 20+ small reels Cabela’s had to let you test... I wonder how that Stella is?” So I watched a good handful of the Shimano Stella engineering videos on KZread and I must say... it is a Fine reel! Sure you can get others like the PENN Slammer III and others that do the job VERY WELL for LESS MONEY! But if this is the kind of smooth, strong, refinement in engineering you want for the higher price tag... I would say study and research other reels in comparison to this Shimano Stella and see how they compare in terms of metals, materials, what reels have better durability, strength and engineering in them to make them the price point they are and perform the way they do. THEN make Good sound judgement on the one / ones YOU WANT. 😁👍✅ I actually want the Shimano Stella now in the 20,000 size (mostly because of how they engineered the gearing ⚙️ and other components, the 100lb braid line rating and that 62lbs drag, I need to test one) and a couple PENN Slammer III’s (I like the all metal body, tough, very durable and cranking power reels, powerful drag system as well 30lb all the way up to 60 lbs and alot of line capacity, but shimano offers the higher line rating, you could just put heavier line on the PENN if you really wanted to though, and I love PENN as a Brand)

honestly to me rods dont mean much but getting decent reels does. price range from 80-150 is good for reels. alot of these kastking, pissnfun, are pretty much garbage. they boast all these ballbearings and high drags but the truth is they are garbage. until they make reels in the 50-100 price range with usable drag and i say USABLE drag then i would consider throwing money in that market...most of those low end flashy reels have drag that goes from 5lb 10lbs 15lbs and 25lbs in half a dial spin...no thanks. garbage drag means increase chances of losing trophy fishes. i recommend people to shop in the $90-$150 price range.

When trolling a spoon type lure on a spinning reel you should use a ball bearing swivel vs the clip. The spoon is gonna wobble and twist while trolling on just a clip causing uneven line lay wraps. This causes uneven pressure on the spool which can wear out spinning reel parts . Stella's are built extremely well but its an unnecessary risk to take. Second set up a spray bottle with reel cleaner and just give a spray or two and wipe down vs excessive cleaning. You can overkill your reel with love cleaning it to much removing important reel grease. A Shimano neoprene spin reel cover for about $12.00 is a great option as well so you can leave the reel on the rod and not stress about protection. Gumbo looks great, real brown roux cooked properly makes serious gumbo well done!

only set back is that shimano stops supporting/servicing reels 5 years after they discontinue their products,,,so now the 2019 stella's have discontinued the 2014 stellas, and previous users have until 2024 to fix their reels and after that, they become obsolete....such a huge investment. you expect these reels to outlive you, like the van staals...but no. I have a couple of Stella reels, my first, a Stella 4000, is 14 years old now and still running like new, I invested in a 14000 for pelagic fishing a few years ago without hesitation due to the quality and service my smaller one has given me.

Instead of rocks, go crabbing next week ? Wait til after dark, no bait, just a bright light, and go for the big jimmies ! If you do wish to go ‘chicken necking’, you can use said parts, or spot for bait during the day. To cook, toss live crabs into a steamer pot, with equal parts water and vinegar, roughly 3/4” deep to make steam... dust them liberally with old bay and cover - start a 20 min timer once they stop scratching, and remove from heat @ the 20 min mark.

I love shimano. I own the dc slx , the tranx 300 ,the calcutta 400b, and a shimano sierra. But honestly I love my daiwa bg 4500. Built like a tank and buttery smooth. Like you said the Stella is the luxury reel. I just can't spend that much on one reel. everytime I walk by it at nuese sports shop it always catches my eye. it does feel nice to fish with expensive gear. Gives you more confidence. But maybe one day

Hey man! Have you tried Daiwa BG 4500? Daiwa BG 4500 reel is comparable to SHIMANO STELLA, but Daiwa BG is even better when it comes to specs. Yeah, you spent a lot of money on an expensive reel, you'll constantly worry about it. Daiwa BG, it's about $100 something and that reel is built like a tank and super smooth as well. I hope you still have the receipt for the SHIMANO STELLA. Change it for the Daiwa BG, I will guarantee you will love it more than the SHIMANO STELLA and don't have to break your bank account.
