The Shifting Debate Over How College Athletes Should Be Paid | WSJ

As the NCAA’s revenue has increased, the debate has intensified over what types of compensation should be considered for college athletes. WSJ explains how a combination of court cases, state legislation, and public pressure are expanding the scope of what it means to be an amateur athlete. Photo: Ronald Martinez/Getty Images

They do. It's called scholarship. It's actually often worth more than the average minor league salary, but not at the NFL or NBA level. You could argue Zion is missing out on 30 million by spending a year in college. Also schools don't make money running sports programs. Football does but track and field, soccer, golf etc don't bring at revenue at all. The money has to come from tuition or government funding.

There should be no scholarships for student Athletes. Football and Basketball, ectra. should be treated as school electives. If the schools are going to pay the players then the team should have nothing to do with the school. Maybe have the team be "Supported" or the team is financed by the school but to say that they are students playing a game and they are paid is an affront to students. Many students could play sports but they value their education more and would never have the time or stamina to practice, train, condition and travel let alone play in games.
